Book excerpt: For forty years after the turn of last century, Willard Jackson trolled the waters off Marblehead, Massachusetts, in a custom motor launch carrying a wooden camera and a box of glass-plate negatives. His quarry? Any vessel that made its way into and out of that mecca of American sailing. Over a century later, the archive of several thousand pictures he collected stands as a one-of-a-kind record of the early development of the American yacht. Matthew Murphy, editor of WoodenBoat magazine, uses Jackson's remarkable work to trace the history of the pleasure sailboat. Each of 75 sharp, breathtaking images is accompanied by a 300-word caption.
Book Synopsis The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners by : Dave Gerr
Download or read book The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners written by Dave Gerr and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 1999-08-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work is significant. It is the first to include a method of assessing structural strength in the context of the modern marine environment." --Commander M. C. Cruder, U.S. Coast Guard Acclaimed author and naval architect Dave Gerr created this unique system of easy-to-use scantling rules and rules-of-thumb for calculating the necessary dimensions, or scantlings, of hulls, decks, and other boat parts, whether built of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, steel, or aluminum. In addition to the rules themselves, The Elements of Boat Strength offers their context: an in-depth, plain-English discussion of boatbuilding materials, methods, and practices that will guide you through all aspects of boat construction. Now you can avoid wading through dense technical engineering manuals or tackling advanced mathematics. The Elements of Boat Strength has all the formulas, tables, illustrations, and charts you need to judge how heavy each piece of your boat should be in order to last and be safe. With this book, an inexpensive scientific calculator, and a pad of paper, you'll be able to design and specify all the components necessary to build a sound, long-lasting, rugged vessel. What reviewers have said about Dave Gerr's books: Propeller Handbook "By far the best book available on the subject."--Sailing "The best layman's guide we've ever read."--Practical Sailor Dave Gerr and International Marine made a complicated topic understandable and put it into a handbook that is easy to use."--WoodenBoat "Without doubt the definitive reference for selecting, installing, and understanding boat propellers."--Royal Navy Sailing Association Journal The Nature of Boats "If you are not nautically obsessed before reading this book, you will most certainly be afterward."--Sailing Fascinating potpourri of information about today's boats, modern and traditional."--WoodenBoat

Book Synopsis Heart of Glass: Fiberglass Boats and the Men Who Built Them by : Daniel Spurr
Download or read book Heart of Glass: Fiberglass Boats and the Men Who Built Them written by Daniel Spurr and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2004-02-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of fiberglass boats and the mavericks who dreamed them. Nine out of ten sailors today own sturdy, often beautiful fiberglass craft. Fiberglass brought boating to the non-rich, but the history of that revolution has never been told. Daniel Spurr rectifies this omission with his highly readable and affectionate account of the fiberglass boat, from its earliest incarnation in World War II to the present day. In the early days, when shoestring genius was unfettered by industrial efficiency, therewere boats with tailfins, boats baked in ovens, and boats designed to be dropped from planes. The voyage from those first ugly ducklings to the graceful boats of the 1990s makes a riveting adventure of triumph and ruin. Along the way, Spurr profiles landmark designs that now set the standards in the used-boat market, and he portrays the revolution in human terms, introducing us to the vivid personalities who invented--often in their garages and rarely at a profit--the world of boating we know today.

Book Synopsis Vinalhaven Island's Maritime Industries by : Cynthia Burns Martin
Download or read book Vinalhaven Island's Maritime Industries written by Cynthia Burns Martin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vinalhaven Island has been the home port of a productive commercial fishing fleet for over 200 years. By 1819, Vinalhaven vessels were fishing for cod and herring from Seal Island all the way to Labrador waters. By 1878, Carver's Harbor was lined with docks, fishhouses, a sail loft, a net factory, and the Lane & Libby fish plant. Throughout the 19th century, boats brought bait, salt, and supplies to Vinalhaven and returned with fish and granite from the island's quarries. Lighthouses at Brown's Head, Heron Neck, Saddleback Ledge, Goose Rock, and Matinicus guided mariners through storms. In Vinalhaven shops, boatbuilders constructed small dories, peapods and double-enders, masted schooners, and lobster boats, as well as the 365-ton Margaret M. Ford. Passenger ferries played an important role as the primary link between Vinalhaven and the mainland. The island has long been a successful center of maritime economic activity, so it is no surprise that islanders call it "the center of the universe."
