Book excerpt: An unprecedented survey of modern lighting design foregrounding its materials, innovators, and far-reaching influence Offering the first comprehensive history of lighting design from the 20th and 21st centuries, Electrifying Design: A Century of Lighting explores how lighting has been integral to the development of modern design both in terms of aesthetics and technological advances. This fascinating book outlines the key aspects of lighting as a unique and creative artistic discipline and examines themes such as different typologies, the quality of light, and the evolution of the bulb. A series of essays by Sarah Schleuning and Cindi Strauss showcase lighting designs from different time periods and geographic locations and feature the work of significant figures, including Poul Henningsen, Ingo Maurer, and Gino Sarfatti. With over 130 illustrations of functional and sometimes fantastical designs, a historical timeline, and comprehensive artist biographies, this handsome volume expands our understanding of an understudied but influential art form and demonstrates lighting’s central role as both an expression of and a catalyst for innovations in modern and contemporary design. This book was released on 2005-10-04 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroplating and Metal Finishing concerns itself with the development and applications of composites and non metallic coatings. These coatings are used for decorative, protective and functional application. Some of the other common metal surface finishing technologies are phosphating, pickling, electroforming, powder coating etc. Electroplating is the process of applying a metallic coating to an article by passing an electric current through an electrolyte in contact with the article, thereby forming a surface having properties or dimensions different from those of the article. Metal finishing has now come to be known as surface engineering. Surface engineering techniques are generally used to develop a wide range of functional properties. In addition to the decorative aspects, metal finishing aids the protection of metals and alloys from corrosion and rusting. A great potential exists for development of new materials involving, for example, coatings of metals composites particle incorporated anodic coatings and even films of sapphire like materials, porous files of niobium etc. and coating of refractory metals like molybdenum and tungsten. Phosphate coatings have a wide field of application in manufacturing industry, both as an aid to mechanical production operations and in surface finishing. The major applications for phosphate treatments fall into four areas; pre treatment prior to organic coatings, protection against corrosion, anti wear coatings and phosphating as a production aid. Powder coating of aluminium, extrusions in particular, has become an important feature in the finishing of aluminium. There are several advantages of powder; powder coating overspray can be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve nearly 100% use of the coating, powder coating production lines produce less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coatings, capital equipment and operating costs for a powder line are generally less than for conventional liquid lines. Surface finishing is a broad range of industrial processes that alter the surface of a manufactured item to achieve a certain property. Currently, the trend is towards surface treatments. Industries in developing countries like India have to be increasingly aware of the need not only for up gradation of existing technologies but also for indigenization of new technologies on a time bound basis. The content of the book includes information about technology involved in surface engineering of metals; some of them are electroplating plant, barrel planting plant, electroplating equipment, cleaning, pickling and dipping, equipment for hot alkaline cleaners, electrolytic and chemical processes for the polishing of metals, canning stainless steel electro-polishing solution, electroforming in gramophone record production, silver plating, fluoborate plating, gold plating (gilding), cadmium plating, zinc plating, chemical finishing of aluminium, powder coating of aluminium, bright nickel electro plating, copper plating, etc. This book covers an intensive study of technology of electroplating, phosphating, powder coating and metal finishing. The first hand information on these technologies is dealt in the book and can be very useful for those looking for entrepreneurship opportunity in the said industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glamour subverts convention. Models, images, and even landscapes can skew ordinary ways of seeing when viewed through the lens of photography, suggesting new worlds imbued with fantasy, mystery, sexuality, and tension. In Old Fields, John Stilgoe—one of the most original observers of his time—offers a poetic and controversial exploration of the generations-long effort to portray glamour. Fusing three forces in contemporary American culture—amateur photography after 1880; the rise of glamour and fantasy; and the often-mysterious quality of landscape photographs—Stilgoe provides a wide-ranging yet concentrated take on the cultural legacy of our photographic history. Through the medium of "shop theory"—the techniques, tools, and purpose-made equipment a maker uses to realize intent—Stilgoe looks at the role of Eastman Kodak in shaping the ways photographers purchased cameras and films, while also mapping the divisions that were created by European-made cameras. He then goes on to argue that with the proliferation of digital cameras, smart phones, and Instagram, young people’s lack of knowledge about photographic technique is in direct correlation to their lack of knowledge of the history of glamour photography. In his exploration of the rise of glamour and fantasy in contemporary American culture, Stilgoe offers a provocative and very personal look into his enduring fascination with, and the possibilities inherent in, creating one’s own images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1928–1930, the Tugendhat House in Brno / Czech Republic is one of the most significant buildings of European modernism. In 2001, UNESCO added the house to the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites. In this third, updated edition, the authors give personal and historic insights relating to the house; also documenting aspects pertaining to art history and conservation-science studies. The comprehensive description and in-depth discussion of the materials used is a special feature in this field of research. The appeal of this monograph lies in the publication of photographs from the family archive which, for the first time, show the house in its lived-in condition. The experimental artistic color photographs by Fritz Tugendhat are among the pioneering achievements of amateur photography.
