Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a baby born every minute and each one has to be named. In this book, you'll find an insanity of nomenclature that beggars belief. Russell Ash has trawled birth, marriage, and death certificates, phone books, and censuses going back centuries to compile a compendium of breathtakingly unlikely-but-true names. Why on earth would Mr. and Mrs. O'Shea name their son Rick? What were the Fants thinking when they named their child Elle? Or Mr. and Mrs. Royd, for that matter, when naming their daughter Emma? Or how about Everard Cock, Page Turner, or Sally Forth? In this painstakingly researched, utterly true, riotously entertaining collection, readers will discover real-life examples of some of the most unusual, crude, and shocking names ever, presenting a laugh-out-loud overview of eccentricity through the ages.
Book Synopsis The Entrepreneurial Society of the Rhondda Valleys, 1840-1920 by : Richard Griffiths
Download or read book The Entrepreneurial Society of the Rhondda Valleys, 1840-1920 written by Richard Griffiths and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine in a systematic way the entrepreneurial society of the Welsh Valleys. Until now, almost everything written about the society created by the Welsh coal industry has been about the workers and the unions, and there has been a significant gap, which needed to be filled if a rounded picture of life in the south Wales valleys during the coal boom was to be achieved. The book looks at the various sources of wealth in the area - coal owning, railway building, possession of land in crucial areas, contracting, building, property development, shopkeeping - and at the various origins from which the first-generation entrepreneurs came. It then examines closely the networks of power and influence that built up among the second-generation entrepreneurs in the close and claustrophobic middle-class society of the Porth-Pontypridd area. Its method is to take one extended family central to that society, together with its vast network of friends and collaborators, and to examine in great detail, from original sources, the often hair-raising business methods of these people, as well as their conflicts of interest at times of industrial unrest. At the same time, the changes in Valleys life are mirrored in the history of this group: the original 'rags-to-riches' stories of so many of the first generation; the self-sufficient confidence of so many of the second generation, for whom the coal boom seemed bound to last for ever; and the gradual move, thereafter, out of the coal industry and down to the towns on the coast, just in time to avoid the decline of the industry.

Book Synopsis A Genealogy of the Ancient Flemings by : F. Lawrence Fleming
Download or read book A Genealogy of the Ancient Flemings written by F. Lawrence Fleming and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A medieval tradition alleges that the various branches of the Fleming family of the British Isles are descended from the three sons of an earl of Flanders. Pitted against this tradition is the more recent allegation, first made no earlier than the eighteenth century, that unrelated families immigrated in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries to the British Isles from Flanders and independently chose Fleming as a surname. What do historical records have to say concerning these two opposing views? In this publication it is asserted that the records are unanimously in favour of ancient tradition and that the modern allegation is nonsense. The traditional "earl of Flanders" was in reality a man named Erkenbald, the son of an exiled Flemish nobleman living in Normandy during the first half of the eleventh century. Erkenbald the Fleming came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and through him are the Flemings of the British Isles descended from one of the great noble houses of Flanders.

Did iron railway bridges exist before George Stephenson? This book shows that such bridges were built in south Wales thirty years before the construction of Stephenson's Gaunless Viaduct on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and explains where to see these bridges today. Numerous stone viaducts, bridges and causeways were built over gorges. Monumental building detail existed years before the Euston Arch. Even the foundations of American Industrial might were laid here.
