Book excerpt: The Cimarosa Affair is a collection of essays written by Simone Perugini and translated by Elizabeth Thomson. With his latest studies, Simone Perugini sheds new light on the life of the Italian composer, Domenico Cimarosa, one of the greatest exponents of the Neapolitan School in the second half of the 18th century. Using contemporary documentary sources discovered recently in various state archives in Italy, and analysing the scores and the librettos of Cimarosa’s operas, Simone Perugini retraces aspects of Cimarosa’s personal and professional life which were either unknown, or incorrectly reported, before this detailed study.

Book Synopsis JULIUS CAESAR 1935: Shakespeare and Censorship in Fascist Italy by : Silvia Bigliazzi
Download or read book JULIUS CAESAR 1935: Shakespeare and Censorship in Fascist Italy written by Silvia Bigliazzi and published by Skenè. Texts and Studies. This book was released on 2019-12-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 August 1935, only a few months before Mussolini launched the colonial enterprise in Ethiopia, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar was produced at the Maxentius Basilica in Rome. The performance was organised by The National Workers’ Recreational Club (O.N.D.) and the script was submitted for censorship. However, the procedure followed a different course from the usual one as the commissioner was also part of the Fascist political system. This parallel edition presents for the first time the integral script of the censored text of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in Raffaello Piccoli's 1925 Italian translation, and explores the implications of this peculiar type of censorship at the moment when, through Shakespeare, censoring became one and the same with political propaganda.

Book Synopsis Époque Émilienne by : Ruth Edith Hagengruber
Download or read book Époque Émilienne written by Ruth Edith Hagengruber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contextualizes Du Châtelet’s contribution to the philosophy of her time. The editor offers this tribute to an Époque Émiliennee as a collection of innovative papers on Emilie Du Châtelet’s powerful philosophy and legacy. Du Châtelet was an outstanding figure in the era she lived in. Her work and achievements were unique, though not an exception in the 18th century, which did not lack outstanding women. Her personal intellectual education, her scholarly network and her mental acumen were celebrated in her time, perceiving her to have “multiplied nine figures by nine figures in her head”. She was able to gain access to institutions which were normally denied to women. To call an epoch an Époque Émilienne may be seen as daring and audacious, but it will not be the last time if we continue to bring women philosophers back into the memory of the history of philosophy. The contributors paid attention to the philosophical state of the art, which forms the background to Du Châtelet’s philosophy. They follow the transformation of philosophical concepts under her pen and retrace the impact of her ideas. The book is of interest to scholars working in the history of philosophy as well as in gender studies. It is of special interest for scholars working on the 18th century, Kant, Leibniz, Wolff, Newton and the European Enlightenment.
Book Synopsis Engendering the Republic of Letters by : Susan Dalton
Download or read book Engendering the Republic of Letters written by Susan Dalton and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being women provided them with a particular perspective, expressed first-hand through their letters. Dalton shows how Lespinasse, Roland, Renier Michiel, and Mosconi grappled with differences of ideology, social status, and community, often through networks that mixed personal and professional relations, thus calling into question the actual separation between public and private spheres. Building on the work of Dena Goodman and Daniel Gordon, Dalton shows how a variety of conflicts were expressed in everyday life and sheds new light on Venice as an important eighteenth-century cultural centre.

He lived a life stranger than most fictions, and the tale of his own adventures is his most compelling story, and one that remained unfinished at the time of his death. This new selection contains all the highlights of Casanova's life: his youth in Venice as a precocious ecclesiastic; his dabbling in the occult; his imprisonment and thrilling escape; and his amorous conquests, ranging from noblewomen to nuns.
