This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment data collected in Lac Saint-Louis and Lac Saint-Pierre by NWRI have been analysed with a SPANS geographic information system to determine the volumes and distributions of modern sediments and to estimate the volumes of contaminated sediments (the silt-clay fraction). Sediment thickness and size patterns are highly variable in both lakes and depositional basins are difficult to define, particulary in Lac Saint-Pierre. The thickest sediments in Lac Saint-Louis are also the finest. There are three areas of accumulation: just downstream of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa River entrances and behind the islands of the southshore. Data on the thickness and grain size of modern sediments in the St. Lawrence lakes, collected during the period of 1985 to 1990 were used in this report to compute preliminary estimates of the volume and distribution of contaminated sediments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six government partners - Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, Parks Canada Agency, the Ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement et des Parcs du Québec, the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune du Québec - and Stratégies Saint-Laurent, a nongovernmental organization that works actively with riverside communities, are pooling their expertise and efforts to provide Canadians with information on the state of the St. Lawrence and long-term trends affecting it. To this end, environmental indicators have been developed on the basis of data collected as part of each organization's ongoing environmental monitoring activities. This fact sheet is about Lake Saint-Pierre, which is a favourable environment for sediment accumulation. It is also, and has been for decades, subject to a great diversity of different sources of contamination.

Book excerpt: "Bottom and suspended sediment was collected from the St. Lawrence River between Kingston and Cornwall inJuly 1981 by the Water Quality Branch, Ontario Region. Samples were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, chlorobenzenes and organic carbon. Particle size distribution was determined on bottom sediment. This report summarizes the concentration and distribution of the trace organic contaminants and compares findings with other available historical data. Total PCBs were compared with the Ontario Ministry of Environment dredged material guideline for open water disposal"--Abstract, p. v
