Book excerpt: "The artist Giovanni Segantini was a leading member of the European avant-garde of his day. He was hailed as an 'innovator', a 'prophet' and a 'revolutionary': in an obituary one critic called him a "Secession in his own right". His work was to be seen in public and private collections alike, and had a major effect on art in Europe at the time. Even the Futurists cited him as a role-model." "This is the first ever Segantini monograph in English. It offers the public an opportunity to see important paintings and drawings by this artist, including his famous triptych La vita - La natura - La morte (Live - Nature - Death). With in-depth essays on the artist's oeuvre - from his early genre paintings, influenced by Realism, right up to his symbolic depictions of Nature in a Divisionist style - this publication is an up-to-date, comprehensive monograph on Giovanni Segantini."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: "Based on numerous important paintings and drawings, this extensive publication presents the life and work of Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899), the enthusiastic Divisionist and Symbolist whose work was inspired by light. His desire to translate the bright, clear light he experienced in the alpine world led to an enormous painterly development, one that is evident in all of his creative phases--starting with his time in Brianza, Lombardy, the pictures of farm life in Savognin, and finally, to the apex of his career, characterized by the brightly lit mountain landscapes of the Engadin Valley. Scholarly and literary essays acknowledge the important role Segantini played in reviving landscape painting and paving the way for modernism, and assign him a new place in the history of world art as a painter of light."--Publisher's website.

It lets you trace the roots of modern art, beginning with Realist paintings such as Courbet's The Stonebreakers and Millet's The Gleaners - works that shocked mid-19th-century Paris with their unblinking depiction of the lives of the poor. From Realism to Art Nouveau beautifully captures this turbulent era with an incisive text and breathtaking reproductions of works by Manet, Rossetti, Sargent, Monet, Seurat, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Klimt and others.

This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the symbol is at the root of the Symbolist movement, but this symbol is different from the way it was used and understood in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the Symbolist movement, a symbol is not an allegory. The Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck defined its essence in an article that appeared on April 24, 1887, in L’Art moderne. He wrote that the notion of a symbol in the Symbolist movement is the opposite of the notion of the symbol in classical usage: instead of going from the abstract to the concrete (Venus, incarnated in the statue, represents love), it goes from the concrete to the abstract, from “what is seen, heard, felt, tasted, and sensed to the evocation of the idea.” This volume attempts to give a glimpse into the power of the Symbolist movement and the nature of its fundamental and interdisciplinary role in the evolution of art and literature of the twentieth century. It records the studies of a group of scholars, who met and discussed these topics together for the first time in 2009. While illuminating the specificity of Symbolism in art, architecture and literature in different European countries, these articles also demonstrate the crucial role of French Symbolism in the development of the international Symbolist movement. The authors hope that an expanding group, a society of Art, Literature and Music in Symbolism and Decadence (ALMSD), born out of the first meeting, will continue to further this discussion at future conferences and in the printed conference proceedings.
