Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was in elementary school, I was discouraged by my teacher. I was called upon to read in front of my class. I started to read, and after I read one sentence, I was told to sit down. I wanted to read more, but she would not allow me to read. All through school, I hated English, until I took a journalism class during my junior year. My teacher encouraged me to go beyond my limits! I graduated in 1975. I went to work at an automakers in the spring of 1993. It put me on sick leave. I came home one day and sat down and started writing my book in 1993. I wrote my book context as one long sentence. My workplace started a learning center via UAW-1 of the big-three automakers. I had so many great teachers through Huron Valley Duck Lake School. The direction I took as of 2015 is this one. I had so many manuscripts with different titles. Someone stole my two Library of Congress’ copy of deposits. I had to write Gilda’s and Glen’s Geese Nest into this direction from memory. My imagination took over, and I finished my book in 2018—twenty-five years after I started it! I want to encourage children to read and write because it is never too late.

Book excerpt: “To have a service dog like Able should be the medication any soldier is prescribed who has gone out and had trauma of some kind.” In Hope Has a Cold Nose, Christine Hassing relays true stories of military veterans and others who rose from the ashes of PTSD and MST with the help of their service dogs. Devoting every chapter to a different human-canine pair, Hassing shares the story of each person with PTSD and their service dog with pathos and creativity. These powerful stories, part testimonial, part author’s interpretation using rhythm and rhyme, bring important insights about how service dogs help people with PTSD and MST in countless ways. From sensing a nightmare and waking a veteran before terror takes hold, to placing a comforting paw on someone’s shoulder to ward off a panic attack, these dogs play a key role in helping those who’ve lived through trauma reintegrate into society. Lovingly written, Hope Has a Cold Nose is a unique and compelling collection of survivors’ stories for dog lovers of all kinds, for those who’ve experienced PTSD and their loved ones, and for those interested in how service dogs can help people heal from the deepest emotional wounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coco is a vivacious and enthusiastic romantic on a determined search for the one true love of her life. At about two times the age of a regular princess (or even more), she fearlessly pursues her fairy-tale ending by embracing the paradoxes and age-defying opportunities offered by the modern age. Bolstered by the notions that fifty is the new forty and divorced is the new single, she ventures into the medium of the internet, a space where all things old are excitingly renewed to search for the one. The fairyland of online dating proves to be populated by characters very much akin to those found in fairy tales of old. There are some trolls and other downright dastardly types and others of beastly appearance who turn out to be kindly. There are also some wily witches who try to trap and ensnare. Fortunately, the fairy godmothers (BFFs) mentored Coco through the Black Forest. So will she find the dashing Prince Charming and live happily ever after? Read on and see!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Beyond question one of the most skillful mystery writers . . . offers a first rate piece of work. . . . Lord Peter Wimsey [is] at his amusing best. . . . The book is a treat” (The New York Times). The majestic landscape of the Scottish coast has attracted artists and fishermen for centuries. In the idyllic village of Kirkcudbright, every resident and visitor has 2 things in common: They either fish or paint (or do both), and they all hate Sandy Campbell. Though a fair painter, he is a rotten human being, and cannot enter a pub without raising the blood pressure of everybody there. No one weeps when he dies. Campbell’s body is found at the bottom of a steep hill, and his easel stands at the top, suggesting that he took a tumble while painting. But something about the death doesn’t sit right with gentleman sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. No one in Kirkcudbright liked Campbell, and 6 hated him enough to become suspects; 5 are innocent, and the other is the perpetrator of the most ingenious murder Lord Peter has ever encountered. The Five Red Herrings is the 7th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From mid-August to mid-September 1863, Union major general William S. Rosecrans’s Army of the Cumberland maneuvered from Tennessee to north Georgia in a bid to rout Confederate general Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee and blaze the way for further Union advances. Meanwhile, Confederate reinforcements bolstered the numbers of the Army of Tennessee, and by the time the two armies met at the Battle of Chickamauga, in northern Georgia, the Confederates had gained numerical superiority. Although the Confederacy won its only major victory west of the Appalachians, it failed to achieve the truly decisive results many high-ranking Confederates expected. In The Chickamauga Campaign,Steven E. Woodworth assembles eight thought-provoking new essays from an impressive group of authors to offer new insight into the complex reasons for this substantial, yet ultimately barren, Confederate victory. This broad collection covers every angle of the campaign, from its prelude to its denouement, from the points of view of key players of all ranks on both sides. In addition to analyzing the actions taken by Union leaders Thomas L. Crittenden, Alexander McCook, and James S. Negley, and Confederate commanders Braxton Bragg, Patrick Cleburne, Daniel Harvey Hill, Thomas C. Hindman, James Longstreet, and Alexander P. Stewart, the book probes the campaign’s impact on morale in the North and South, and concludes with an essay on the campaign’s place in Civil War memory. The final essay pays particular attention to Union veteran Henry Van Ness Boynton, the founder and developer of Chickamauga and Chattanooga State Military Park, whose achievements helped shape how the campaign would be remembered. This second volume in the Civil War Campaigns in the Heartland seriesprovides a profound understanding of the campaign’s details as well as its significance to Civil War history. Book excerpt: After Charles was filled with the Holy Spirit he had his first vision about the horrors facing unbelievers. In response, and fearing for his family, he began to soak up the Word of God ‘like a sponge’ under the instruction of amazingly dedicated Bible teachers, over a period of more than 40 years, which is reflected in this book. He is very concerned about complacent Christians presumptuously resting on God’s mercy and benefits unaware that God’s promises are always conditional depending on repentance. He became particularly interested in end-times, in the unity promised by Jesus in John 17 and in the prophetic days of the creation. God has given him the gift of interpreting the symbolism, used in the prophetic scriptures, which he hopes readers will appreciate. The prophetic elements in the life of Samson and the Temple of Solomon, elaborated in this book, will be new to the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ruthless Democracy, Timothy Powell reimagines the canonical origins of "American" identity by juxtaposing authors such as Hawthorne, Melville, and Thoreau with Native American, African American, and women authors. Taking his title from Melville, Powell identifies an unresolvable conflict between America's multicultural history and its violent will to monoculturalism. Powell challenges existing perceptions of the American Renaissance--the period at the heart of the American canon and its evolutions--by expanding the parameters of American identity. Drawing on the critical traditions of cultural studies and new historicism, Powell invents a new critical paradigm called "historical multiculturalism." Moving beyond the polarizing rhetoric of the culture wars, Powell grounds his multicultural conception of American identity in careful historical analysis. Ruthless Democracy extends the cultural and geographical boundaries of the American Renaissance beyond the northeast to Indian Territory, Alta California, and the transnational sphere that Powell calls the American Diaspora. Arguing for the inclusion of new works, Powell envisions the canon of the American Renaissance as a fluid dialogue of disparate cultural voices.
