Book excerpt: In this powerful holiday story, a man who lost everything has his whole life changed after a little girl’s letter reminds him of the true meaning of Christmas. Ten years later Big Earl meets Gideon, a seven-year-old leukemia patient who believes with all her heart that "Christmas means never having to ask God how much he loves us." Gideon is determined to reach this lonely and hurting man who hates Christmas -- and he is just as determined to rebuff her. It will take a miracle for Earl to come to understand the true meaning of Christmas. But if he can accept what Gideon wants to give him, he might find that he can return the favor with a precious gift of his own. In Gideon's Gift, Karen Kingsbury reminds us that Christmas is still a time of miraculous possibilities if only we reach out to those around us.

With his time in the Navy—and a painful, toxic relationship—behind him, he’s ready to start a new life. Now all he has to do is figure out how to keep his matchmaking mother out of his business…and how to not fall for his sweet, nerdy, and entirely too attractive neighbor… They’re complete opposites with nothing but trust issues in common. Their timing? Terrible. And yet…none of that matters when they’re together. Will love be enough to get Gideon and Isaiah to happily ever after? Or are they destined to remain star-crossed? “Gideon’s Wish, a standalone, steamy, lightly angsty, M/M contemporary romance, features a loveable, openly gay handyman and the not-so-openly gay alpha male of his dreams. Book excerpt: Gideon’s Sword—Remnant Rescue Series | Book 3 begins immediately after the Rapture when the multi-national crew of the International Space Station (ISS) watches atomic wars destroy most of the United States and their aftermath kill one-fourth of the world’s population. National allegiances on the space station soon split between the majority-Russian crew and two friends—an American and Israeli. When a Russian resupply ship approached the ISS with food and supplies, astronauts Ryan Legend and Gabriel Weiss take drastic action that saves their lives. They dub their new home the Blue Star. The two astronauts’ rescue from space comes from an unlikely place when the Remnant Rescue organization rebuilds a rocket found in an aerospace museum and launch three of their own astronauts to the Blue Star. What the two castaway astronauts think is a rescue mission turns out to be an ingenious space shield as Jews enter a time period known as Jacob’s Trouble or the Great Tribulation. Gideon’s Sword is also the name of a space platform from which captured Israeli atomic missiles with non-lethal electromagnetic pulse (EMP) warheads rain down on Imperium forces. A Syrian mechanized division, a strategic fortress, and the rebuilt city of Babylon all become targets. Not knowing the source of the mysterious attacks from space, the Imperium’s kingdoms turn on each other in a fierce nuclear exchange. Before the astronauts return home, they save a Christian from a space cruiser recently returned from an expedition to Mars in a race to dodge a satellite programmed to collide with what remains of the ISS and kill everyone.

Book excerpt: Author Peter Leavell forges an unprecedented tale of tragedy and triumph amid the backdrop of the Civil War through the story of Tad, a very clever slave boy who comes of age as America's war reaches the sea islands of South Carolina. Tad's desire to better himself is obstructed by the color of his skin, until Northern soldiers force the evacuation of white plantation owners, setting 10,000 slaves free in a single day. These circumstances seem like a dream, except that the newly freed slaves have no money, no education, and little hope for the future-unless someone rises up to lead them. Based on true events, Gideon's Call is the dramatic tale of a young man who battles the shame of his past and faces the horrors of war and unimaginable prejudice to become the deliverer of thousands of freed slaves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Judges is part of the world's literary and cultural canon, and as such it provides insights about political leadership, gender relationships, power disparities, personal strengths and weakness, as well as social and political ethics. In addition, for many Jewish and Christian scholars, Judges is a canonical, scriptural text. This new commentary on Judges considers all these issues, adopting two key approaches: rhetorical criticism and historical criticism. As a rhetorical commentary, the volume pays attention to the factors in the text that are being marshalled to influence the reader. Attention is paid to what the text does, and how it works when it is read closely. This element of the commentary encompasses lexical and grammatical issues, organizing arrangements and patterns, the intentions of various literary genres, along with narrative plot and structure. As a critical commentary, the volume deals with the history of the text's formation and transmission. It establishes the earliest recoverable text of Judges as a way of getting as close as possible to the producers of the text and its early audiences. It provides a well-argued description of how Judges was brought together as a coherent document from earlier oral and written sources and how it was later modified and supplemented. Together these aspects enable Nelson to provide a bold new commentary on Judges that is broad in scope and pays close attention to every detail of the text.

Book excerpt: A Parallel World, A Parallel Time...The light began to move toward Gideon. Racing, faster and faster, it silently brightened until it filled his whole world. As it neared, he leaned forward and looked into the light to see the power, the immeasurable power, coming to reside in him, coming to be his alone...But as the light came, it changed. What was a distant star took the shape of a flaming sword, emblazoned with pure fire that burned hotter than even the world could bear. And there was something else--Gideon could see more than just a sword. Someone was holding it. Someone more brilliant than the sun--and more terrible. Someone who was coming. For him... In the style of classic fantasy epics, Warden creates a mystical realm where an ordinary man must confront his fears to comprehend his extraordinary destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gideon’s People is the story of an American Indian community in the Housatonic Valley of northwestern Connecticut. It is based on some three decades of nearly uninterrupted German-language diaries and allied records kept by the Moravian missionaries who had joined the Indians at a place called Pachgatgoch, later Schaghticoke. It is supplemented by colonial records and regional political, social, and religious histories and ethnographies. As such, it represents the only comprehensive, thoroughly contextualized description of a Native people in southern New England and adjacent eastern New York for the mid-eighteenth century. The Moravians’ diaries report on the day-to-day activities in the community, including house-building, the production of material goods, hunting, fishing, and farming. We are told of marriages, births, deaths, disease, and the calamity of alcohol abuse. The unavoidable interactions with surrounding Indians and close-by colonial farmers and townspeople are offered in detail, along with the sometimes contentious relations with local and colonial authorities. And there is the omnipresence of the missionaries’ religious message to the Indians, frequently accepted and then tested by the inevitable temptations and, more than once, spurned. But we also learn of the struggles of the Moravians to feed and clothe themselves at a distance from their congregation in Bethlehem and their endeavors, often marked by conflict and deep personal pain, to lead their Native flock to the Lamb.
