Book excerpt: An eminent ecologist shows how an iconic New England island has been shaped by nature and human history, and how its beloved landscape can be protected Full of surprises, bedecked with gorgeous photographs and maps, and supported by unprecedented historical and ecological research, this book awakens a new perspective on the renowned New England island Martha's Vineyard. David Foster explores the powerful natural and cultural forces that have shaped the storied island to arrive at a new interpretation of the land today and a well-informed guide to its conservation in the future. Two decades of research by Foster and his colleagues at the Harvard Forest encompass the native people and prehistory of the Vineyard, climate change and coastal dynamics, colonial farming and modern tourism, as well as land planning and conservation efforts. Each of these has helped shape the island of today, and each also illuminates possibilities for future caretakers of the island's ecology. Foster affirms that Martha's Vineyard is far more than just a haven for celebrities, presidents, and moguls; it is a special place with a remarkable history and a population with a proud legacy of caring for the land and its future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giants are a ubiquitous feature of medieval romance. As remnants of a British prehistory prior to the civilization established, according to the Historium regum Britannie, by Brutus and his Trojan followers, giants are permanently at odds with the chivalric culture of the romance world. Whether they are portrayed as brute savages or as tyrannical pagan lords, giants serve as a limit against which the chivalric hero can measure himself. In Outsiders: The Humanity and Inhumanity of Giants in Medieval French Prose Romance, Sylvia Huot argues that the presence of giants allows for fantasies of ethnic and cultural conflict and conquest, and for the presentation—and suppression—of alternative narrative and historical trajectories that might have made Arthurian Britain a very different place. Focusing on medieval French prose romance and drawing on aspects of postcolonial theory, Huot examines the role of giants in constructions of race, class, gender, and human subjectivity. She selects for study the well-known prose Lancelot and the prose Tristan, as well as the lesser known Perceforest, Le Conte du papegau, Guiron le Courtois, and Des Grantz Geants. By asking to what extent views of giants in Arthurian romance respond to questions that concern twenty-first-century readers, Huot demonstrates the usefulness of current theoretical concepts and the issues they raise for rethinking medieval literature from a modern perspective.

Book excerpt: A great shadow over the land threatens to overwhelm not only the people but a thousand years of Giant service and perhaps the Giants themselves. The future of the land depends on three young prodigals and an aging hero. Their personal struggles must be set aside, for they are the land's only true hope. Book Two of the Giants Trilogy follows Thomas, as a much older man now serving as the Land's Forest Ward, and two of his grandchildren (seventeen-year-old Tommy and thirteen-year-old Rose). They are unexpectedly caught up in a struggle for the survival of their people and their way of life. A sudden tragic change shocks them from a complacent and distracted life. Thomas, Tommy, and a band of lost prodigals are placed on a dangerous path toward destiny or destruction. Though they are unprepared, they are all that stands between hope for the future and loss of all they hold dear.

Book Synopsis A BOOK OF GIANTS - 25 stories about giants through the ages by : Anon E. Mouse
Download or read book A BOOK OF GIANTS - 25 stories about giants through the ages written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind has ever been fascinated by extraordinary aspects of humanity, but none so much as giants. Many ancient gods, and indeed kings and emperors, were said to be vast in size: witness, for instance, the colossal statues of Egypt, China or the South Seas. But the palm for bigness must go to those giant beings whom we find amid the chaos in the East: like that Tiamat from whom the Babylonian god Bel formed heavens and earth; and Purushu of the Hindu Vedas, whose severed head was sufficient for making the sky, his feet for the earth, his eye for the sun, and his mind for the moon. Herein are 25 stories of giants from the annuls of fact and fiction around the world compiled and retold by Henry Wysham Lanier. Lanier has categorised the stories into four parts being: I Giants Of The Morning Of The World II From The Days Of Romance III Nursery Tales of Giants from Many Lands IV Real Giants The stories in these four sections are: I. How Zeus Fought With Titans And Giants II. The Giant Who Shines In The Sky III. The Outwitting Of Polyphemus IV. When Thor Went To Jotunheim V. The Giant Pyramid-Builder VI. The Fatal Pride Of Vukub VII. Og, King Of Bashan VIII. A Son Of Anak IX. Ferragus, Who Owned The Brazen Head X. The Giant Of St. Michael's Mount XI. Sir Launcelot And Tarquin XII. The Adventures Of Yvain XIII. The Turke And Gawain XIV. Amadis Among The Giants XV. Gogmagog XVI. The Giant Behind The Waterfall XVII. The One Good Giant: St. Christopher XVIII.
