Download or read book Black Sheep written by Peter Sims and published by Tom Rath. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of years from now, anthropologists will puzzle: twenty-first century humans lived in some of the wealthiest societies in history, yet only a minority of us, around a third, reported being happy. Why? One big problem is that so many of us feel trapped, playing a part rather than being our true selves; pursuing an expected path to success, which is supposed to bring happiness but that doesn’t actually excite us or nurture our souls. Is this you? Perhaps you feel out of your natural element much of the time, undervalued, or left behind. Maybe you long to break free and stop following the herd. Let’s face it, though. We live in a white-sheep world, and that’s where Peter Sims initially found himself, working inside the capital markets of London. As “just another suit chasing the next sip of sugar water” in the hamster wheel of life, Sims and his colleagues wondered if there’s a better life on the other side? Turns out, the black sheep were everywhere, doing things differently—starting with living life. If the thought of freeing your inner child exhilarates you, we invite you to crack open this book. If you yearn to dance to your own music, read on. If the idea of black sheep reinventing the world from the ground up excites you, join Peter as he shares his deeply personal journey and the development of the Black Sheep movement
Book Synopsis I Know a Little About a Lot of Things by : Rick Tough
Download or read book I Know a Little About a Lot of Things written by Rick Tough and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a chronicle of my life and my life-long career in the construction industry throughout Western Canada. It begins, as my life did, in the 50’s and traverses through to this present day, reflcting on the many life experiences, challenges and achievements that I have appreciated over the last 68 years. Growing up in this post-war era and living through the vast societal and economic changes since that time has been a great period to live, grow and work. For those readers who are my vintage, I hope it brings back fond memories and familiar feelings and for those younger readers, I hope it illustrates a completely different world than where we live today; not better, not worse, just very different.

Book Synopsis Mining Coal and Undermining Gender by : Jessica Smith Rolston
Download or read book Mining Coal and Undermining Gender written by Jessica Smith Rolston and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though mining is an infamously masculine industry, women make up 20 percent of all production crews in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin—the largest coal-producing region in the United States. How do these women fit into a working culture supposedly hostile to females? This is what anthropologist Jessica Smith Rolston, herself a onetime mine worker and the daughter of a miner, set out to discover. Her answers, based on years of participant-observation in four mines and extensive interviews with miners, managers, engineers, and the families of mine employees, offer a rich and surprising view of the working “families” that miners construct. In this picture, gender roles are not nearly as straightforward—or as straitened—as stereotypes suggest. Gender is far from the primary concern of coworkers in crews. Far more important, Rolston finds, is protecting the safety of the entire crew and finding a way to treat each other well despite the stresses of their jobs. These miners share the burden of rotating shift work—continually switching between twelve-hour day and night shifts—which deprives them of the daily rhythms of a typical home, from morning breakfasts to bedtime stories. Rolston identifies the mine workers’ response to these shared challenges as a new sort of constructed kinship that both challenges and reproduces gender roles in their everyday working and family lives. Crews’ expectations for coworkers to treat one another like family and to adopt an “agricultural” work ethic tend to minimize gender differences. And yet, these differences remain tenacious in the equation of masculinity with technical expertise, and of femininity with household responsibilities. For Rolston, such lingering areas of inequality highlight the importance of structural constraints that flout a common impulse among men and women to neutralize the significance of gender, at home and in the workplace. At a time when the Appalachian region continues to dominate discussion of mining culture, this book provides a very different and unexpected view—of how miners live and work together, and of how their lives and work reconfigure ideas of gender and kinship.
Download or read book Power Lines written by Jeff Ordower and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential anthology on the most effective ways to organize a labor movement for environmental justice, from leading organizers in the field The corporate elite have long pitted climate and labor movements against each other through a “jobs vs. the environment” narrative that maximizes profits. But over the last few years, labor unions and climate organizers have been pushing back against this framework and organizing for a real just transition. Featuring contributions from key organizers in climate justice and labor, Power Lines tackles the most pressing questions facing those who are trying to build a movement for economic and environmental justice. The collection provides practical organizing models and strategies as well as inspiration for the possibility of making change on climate. Power Lines moves beyond an analysis of the class politics of climate change or the strategic imperative of federal climate legislation, making the case for the urgency of a robust labor–climate justice movement. It also shows us how we can build that movement by sharing some of the most creative and effective organizing happening on the ground right now.
