Book excerpt: In vivid, melodic prose, Gabriel revisits his childhood in Ireland, a world that has long since been renovated by time, and juxtaposes these memories with scenes from later years, in which he develops and occupies that strange identity of movie star. Impressionistic and sensual, Byrne's visions of home, of boyhood and adolescence, are gracefully interspersed with jump-cuts to pointedly unglamorous scenes from his life as he becomes an actor, as he becomes celebrated, as he becomes forever recognizable. Byrne is interested in exploring the pathos in what it means to be famous, in what it means to be praised when everything you’ve learned tells you that are not worthy of praise.

Book excerpt: In Walking Ghosts, Steven Dudley, a journalist who lived in Columbia for five years, expertly chronicles the life and death of the Patriotic Union (UP), the party established by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Colombia's largest guerrilla group. Through stories of the politicians, drug kingpins, revolutionaries, and mercenaries who play key roles in Colombia's civil strife, Dudley maps out the complicated and murderous absurdity that is present-day Colombia, where daily life has devastating consequences: 30,000 murders per year, 75 political assassinations per week, 10 kidnappings a day. As the conflict gets bloodier, international pressure and influence mounts: Worried about the FARC's strength and its role in the drug trade, the United States has sent close to three billion dollars in aid to help the Colombian government fight the FARC. Steven Dudley seeks to make sense of this complicated conflict by focusing on the stories of key actors in the struggle, from the earliest days to the present. He has seen the civil war up close: dead bodies; paramilitaries; guerrillas; victims; and survivors. He has witnessed political parties grappling for power by any means necessary, and he's spoken to all sides and asked the difficult questions. Fast-paced and informative, with a new afterword by the author, Walking Ghosts presents a window into a conflict likely to shape the politics of this hemisphere for years to come.

Book excerpt: Take the Exorcist Steps to meet “the diverse array of ghosts” in DC’s historic neighborhood—from the author of Capitol Hill Haunts (The Hoya). On the banks of the Potomac River, Georgetown has had three centuries to accumulate ghoulish tales and venerable apparitions to haunt its cobbled streets and mansions. In this historic Washington, DC, neighborhood, the eerie moans of three sisters herald every death on the river, and on R Street, President Lincoln is rumored to have witnessed the paranormal at a seance. Along the towpath of the C&O Canal, a phantom police officer still walks his lonely beat, and on moonlit nights, he is joined by a razor-wielding ghoul. From the spirit of a sea captain who lingers in the Old Stone House to the strange ambiance of the Exorcist Steps, author and guide Tim Krepp takes readers on a chilling journey through the ghostly lore of Georgetown. Includes photos! “A great storyteller who, with a confident grasp of the facts and judiciously inserted asides, can bring to life both the haunters and the haunted. His way of ending his chapters with—gasp!—the literary equivalent of a horror movie organ chord lends a delightfully chilling touch.” —HillRag

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a True Story. In 2012, Keith Linder and his girlfriend took up residency in a Seattle suburban home. Within days of moving in, they became victim to some of the most hellish treatments attributed to malevolent activity. Prepare yourself, because this tale is like no other. A well written Forward lets you know what's about to come. Hell is coming. Pure hell. Keith Linder has not only decided to share his horrible experience. But he's also decided to include video and audio evidence (in the order of which they occurred). Video reenactments of what scared him the most. Aftermath pictures of what attacked them combined with the audio and video evidence are what set this book apart from other haunted tales. Finally, the truth comes out about what happened in that house. What Keith and his girlfriend lived through and equally important what others before him lived through is spread throughout the book in a chilling way. Yes, this house was featured on Travel Channels Ghost Adventures episode titled "Demons in Seattle." The episode where Zak Bagans and crew left empty-handed. Keith Linder explains why they left handed. The reader is not going to have that problem. The horror we witnessed will be explained in black and white. Some even in color. I wish I could say the same for what created it. Get ready. The Bothell Hell House: Poltergeist of Washington State is finally here ladies and gentlemen. The truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the sites in the book have been chosen with an eye toward several criteria, including how accessible they are to the public, how evocative experience a trip to them is likely to produce, and the extent to which they actually appear to be haunted. A great many in the various regions of Maryland have some connection to the Colonial era, the War of 1812, or the Civil War, all significant aspects of the state's haunted history. Maryland is divided into six regions for purposes of this book: Baltimore, Central, D.C. Metro, Eastern Shore, Southern, and Western. Geographically speaking, Maryland is not a large state. It is, however, among the oldest in the country, and has a rich, varied, and turbulent history that has contributed to an exceptionally high number of haunted sites. Because it is relatively compact, Maryland is in many ways an ideal state for a haunted roadtrip -- especially in an era of historically high gasoline prices -- and many haunted sites within the same area can easily be reached on a single weekend-long trip. Indeed, although my own home is currently in Northern Virginia, on the southern side of the Potomac River from Maryland, its furthest point from me is still somewhat less than 300 miles -- as opposed to nearly 500 for some of the most distant points in southwestern Virginia. Note that this outline includes more listings than there will be room for in the book, and that a number of these will either be cut, reduced to sidebars within larger chapters, or listed in the appendix of additional haunted sites. As with Ghosthunting Virginia, research revealed early on a striking number of sites reputed by various sources to be haunted. With space in this volume for only a limited number of these, the authors carefully attempted to identify a representative selection that both emphasized variety and a struck a balance between "must include" sites -- such as the graveyard where Edgar Allan Poe is buried -- and more obscure ones that do not appear in any other books.

Instead she's in Washington D.C. at the height of tourist season, looking for an excuse to leave early. She gets one in the worst way possible; a nuclear bomb destroys a large section of the capital.Emily wakes up in the hospital. She's received a massive dose of radiation, her immune system is failing, and she's going to die unless she accepts Colonel Richard Logner's bargain: He has a cure, but in return she must agree to participate in a military experiment. The treatment's side effects include partial memory loss, but Emily wants to live. She accepts his offer and the consequences. At a military base, Emily joins others like her for team-based combat on a virtual reality battlefield. But this is no video game. When she's killed in the simulation, she feels all the agony of dying, and the near impossible odds of winning guarantee her a nightly routine of pain.Only one experiment participant understands how to achieve victory—a young man named Matt—but his solo approach leaves the rest of his squad to die in the virtual world. After Matt tells Emily he can help her, she must decide whether to trust a person no one else does—and most likely sentence her teammates to the nightly anguish—or she can keep trying to win on her own and face the unspeakable torment over, and over, and over. But even success may not be enough to stop Emily from wondering if she should have chosen death back at the hospital.
