Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mid-19th century mining town of Bodie, California located at 8,369 feet, atop the Sierra Nevada Mountains, just 3 1/2 miles from the Nevada border, was considered one of the richest gold and silver mining towns in the west. Geologists who know of its present rich ore deposits, say it could have been again, but since it became a California historic state park in 1962, that possibility was terminated. The old town, now the best preserved ghost town in the Nation, is maintained in a state of arrested decay by the State of California, meaning it will never be restored to its once rough and tough condition of the 1870s, but it is prevented from further deterioration through a system of constant repair. The public is encouraged to visit the old town, and this book is a compilation of stories, news items, historic information, and reports of its past, some true, some possibly true, and some probably outright lies by citizens of the past and news reporters who wrote for the many old newspapers that described life as it was lived in the years immediately following the Civil War. Authors Jim Watson, photographer, and Doug Brodie, former newspaper reporter, have obtained items heretofore never explained nor described in writings about the old town. Their research has made this book a one of a kind publication.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author describes and dramatizes the most memorable places visited, often with accompanied family members, since leaving the country of his birth in 1966. Author notes: After my retirement in 2007, I found the time to compile this travelogue using the notes in my diaries and updating the material through online research, with particular help from the constantly revised Wikipedia entries. In this process, I learned to make each travel essay an evergreen that would not perish soon after its publication as in the case of newspaper travel pieces. Travel has shaped my personality. Global travel to get to know culturally diverse people was one of my childhood ambitions. Moreover, travel is an essential aspect of a journalists life. Therefore, my travels constitute a very important part of my autobiography. I included detail in the hope that the reader would keep this volume for long-term reference. My explorations of U.S. national parks and my camping expeditions should be of particular interest to family oriented travelers.

Book Synopsis Professor Lundy's Guide to Rock Music Connoisseurship by : Duane Emerson Lundy
Download or read book Professor Lundy's Guide to Rock Music Connoisseurship written by Duane Emerson Lundy and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This empirical and theoretical book should be of interest to anyone who dares to consider the contentious topic of measuring and justifying aesthetic value in music, as well as the issue of how experts compare to nonexperts in terms of aesthetic fluency, aesthetic sensitivity and aesthetic judgment in appraising music. The book should be both practical and personal for anyone who has a music collection and loves to see it grow continuously but wisely. What makes someone an expert? The key issue tackled here is how one develops into such a connoisseur of music. Overall, the book should spark much healthy debate about rock music quality and aesthetics in general, both among scholars of aesthetics and the musically passionate general public. Many of the ideas for connoisseur development for music could also be applied to appraisal in other areas of aesthetics beyond music, such as films, visual art, or literature. Words of Praise Professor Lundy's Guide to Rock Music Connoisseurship is simply fantastic. It is written with elegance, eloquence, and passion. His vast knowledge of rock’n’roll will enlighten every reader, and his enthusiasm for this topic is infectious. The book is designed to be comprehensible to any reader, but also carefully cited to please the most demanding scholar. He successfully aims to teach the reader how to become expert in evaluating the aesthetic quality of music, using a precision system to guide us into deeper and defensible judgements on what pieces of music are the best and which are the worst. This is a beautiful book that enriches the heart and brightens the mind. --Rhett Diessner, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Lewis-Clark State College, author of Understanding the Beauty Appreciation Trait: Empirical Research on Seeking Beauty in All Things Aesthetic judgments of music are important, but poorly understood. To the everyday listener, they may seem arbitrary or otherwise inexplicable. In this book, Professor Lundy offers an unashamedly positive view on aesthetic judgments, emphasizing their rational nature and showing how various non-aesthetic biases that do exist can be minimized. The result is a joyful celebration of music, science, and connoisseurship, which is sure to spark further interest and debate on this fascinating topic. --Professor Patrik N. Juslin, Music Psychology Group, Uppsala University, Sweden

Book excerpt: Nature's strangest plants. Herb-harvesting trespassers. Rattlesnakes curled in planter beds. Stoners fumbling with hydroponic systems. Semi-tame backyard buzzards. And the fire of the century. This is not a typical garden book. Plantsman: Notes from a California Garden Designer follows avid plant collector and landscaper Steve Harbour through a year of gardening exploits, beginning in early January when he gardens in shorts and a tee-shirt and ending in December as he empties his torched greenhouse after a tragic wildfire. In between, Harbour: Designs entire gardens without a preconceived plan. Discovers metal bands cutting into one of California's rarest plants. Frightens mountain lions. Discovers an endangered plant species sprouting in his garden. Tours a hippie garden. Deliberates the fate of a beautiful garden after its creator dies. Digs moats to drown gophers. Creates an eclectic landscape bordering a wilderness area. Advises a lost family in the mountains. They don't follow his advice. Ruminates on the Secret Life of Plants. Avoids police barricades to learn the fate of his fire-ravaged home. Struggles to outwit homeowners' associations. Watches a hawk swoop out of the sky to devour a favorite blue jay. And basks in the perfect days of each season. Through it all, Harbour discusses Mediterranean gardens, desert landscape design, native plants, garden exhibits, good plants, problem plants, roses, shopping nurseries for bargains, gaining inspiration from nature, gardening in each season, creating wildlife habitats, choosing landscape professionals, and landscaping in fire country. Plantsman reads like a good travel narrative while offering pages of expert gardening advice. The adventure begins just outside the back door.
