Book excerpt: “Maia Ramnath's Haj to Utopia is an odyssey through the world of early twentieth-century political radicalism, with a focus on the freedom dreams of those of Indian ancestry who found themselves on the West Coast of the United States. She traces with pointillist care the unruly imaginations fired up by empire's unimaginative rule. To be read and re-read.” —Vijay Prashad, author of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World "Maia Ramnath’s Haj to Utopia is a thought-provoking study of the Ghadar project for revolutionary change. Going beyond the frame of a nationalist, armed struggle for the overthrow of British rule in India, the author deftly explores and contextualizes the links between Ghadar and a medley of revolutionary groups, and the exotic mix of radical ideas and activities. It provides valuable insight into the peculiar conjunction of nationalist, pan-Islamist, and Marxian discourses which made Ghadar a unique revolutionary adventure." —Harish K. Puri, author Ghadar Movement: Ideology, Organisation and Strategy “Maia Ramnath's book on the Ghadar Movement is an impressive accomplishment: it is at once an in-depth monograph surpassing all previous work on the subject, and a model of how world history should be written. She places the Ghadar in the perspective of pre-nationalist, anti-imperialist struggles, connecting it with other contemporary revolutionary movements around the world. It is empirically rich—Ramnath explores all extant empirical sources and illuminates them with exacting theoretical insights.” —Dilip Basu, University of California, Santa Cruz “Maia Ramnath's meticulous scholarship enables her to effortlessly avoid the old clichés of nationalist historiography and the new clichés of ‘global’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ history. The Haj to Utopia is respectful of detail and context and has a fine feeling for the diverse social histories and intellectual movements in which its characters find themselves.” —Benjamin Zachariah, author of Playing the Nation Game: the Ambiguities of Nationalism in India

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghadar Movement was started by the Indian immigrants in Canada and the United States of America, in the first decade of the twentieth century, with the specific aim to free India from the British rule. The movement in its initial stages was carried on by individuals or small groups till 1912 when it was formalized into a more sustainable and financially viable organization, the Hindustan Association of the Pacific Coast, which was later called Ghadar Party from November 1913, though it was not a party in a formal sense. On 1st November 1913, the Ghadar Movement started a Newspaper with the purpose of promoting its aim of India s freedom. Taking advantage of the British involvement in the 1st world war, thousands of Ghadarites rushed to India, from all over the world, to kick the British out. The Ghadar Movement had lost the battle but not its mission; it left a lasting impact on the next generation of revolutionaries, its biggest contribution to the Indian freedom struggle. , Motivation (Reason) for the study: On reading the history of the Indian freedom movement, one finds that a great injustice has been done to the revolutionary freedom fighters by the successive Indian Governments. In the freedom movement, there were predominantly two main streams working simultaneously, namely, the Indian National Congress (INC) with its policy of peaceful agitation (non-violence) and the revolutionaries, whose professed aim was waging an armed struggle. Most of the leading revolutionaries were either murdered by the British or died before Independence, leaving the field open to INC, which formed the Governments in Delhi for the longest period since independence. The government adopted the policy of supporting history writings and historians of peaceful movement only with the result that in the majority of history books of free India one finds about 95% coverage given to INC. and ignoring the role played by the revolutionary movements, including the Ghadar Movement., It is a shame that due recognition is not given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world confronts the fast catastrophe of Covid and the slow calamity of climate change, we also face a third, less visible emergency: a crisis of imagination. We can easily picture ecological disaster or futures dominated by technology. But we struggle to imagine a world in which people thrive and where we improve our democracy, welfare, neighbourhoods or education. Many are resigned to fatalism—yet they desperately want transformational social change. This book argues that, although the threats are real, we can use creative imagination to achieve a better future: visualising where we want to go and how to get there. Political and social thinker Geoff Mulgan offers lessons we can learn from the past, and methods we can use now to open up thinking about the future and spark action. Drawing on social sciences, the arts, philosophy and history, Mulgan shows how we can recharge our collective imagination. From Socrates to Star Wars, he provides a roadmap for the future.
