Lehrerinnen und Lehrer erhalten laut der Allgemeinen Dienstordnung für Lehrkräfte in Nordrhein-Westfalen den Auftrag, ihre Schüler zu erziehen und ihre Leistungen zu beurteilen: „Es gehört zum Beruf der Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, in eigener Verantwortung und pädagogischer Freiheit die Schülerinnen und Schüler zu erziehen, zu unterrichten, zu beraten, zu beurteilen, zu beaufsichtigen und zu betreuen.“ Dabei bestehen Erziehungsmethoden häufig daraus, Schülern Verhaltensregeln aufzuerlegen und diese mit Belohnung und Bestrafung durchzusetzen, ihnen Befehle zu erteilen und ihnen beizubringen, sich den Urteilen der Lehrpersonen unterzuordnen. Diese Urteile beschränken sich oftmals nicht nur auf die Vergabe von Noten: Schülern werden Lernschwächen diagnostiziert oder sie können etwa als „Schüler mit einer langsamen Auffassungsgabe“ bezeichnet werden. Der US-amerikanische Psychologe Marshall B. Rosenberg (1934-2015) erklärt, diese autoritären Verhaltensweisen seien Formen der nicht-physischen Gewalt. Urteile und Befehle können unsere Beziehung zu den Schülern verschlechtern, sie demotivieren und ihrem Selbstbild schaden. Mit seiner Gewaltfreien Kommunikation (GfK) versucht er einen Weg aufzuzeigen, Schüler nicht mehr zu verurteilen, sondern ihre Bedürfnisse wahrzunehmen und einfühlsam auf sie einzugehen. Die GfK verspricht, die Beziehungen zwischen Lehrern und Schülern zu bereichern, Konflikte zu lösen und die Bedürfnisse aller Beteiligten zu erfüllen. Außerdem kann sie das Lernklima verbessern, die Motivation der Schüler fördern und ihren Selbstwert stärken.
