In der folgenden Untersuchung wird zum einen der Begriff "Gewalt" näher erklärt und die lange Diskussion über die Gewaltwirkung im Fernsehen aufgezeigt, wobei hier nur die entscheidenden Jahre genannt werden, zu deren Zeit die Diskussion besonders stark war. Zum anderen ist es wichtig zu klären, welche Probleme mit der Gewaltwirkungsforschung aufgetreten sind und wie der aktuelle Stand ist. Am Ende zeigt diese Untersuchung noch den Konsum und die Wirkung von Gewalt im Fernsehen auf unsere Jugend und welche Folgen auftreten können.

In den USA wurden in den letzten Jahren Gewalttaten an Schulen von Jugendlichen verübt, deren Brutalität eine völlig neue Dimension anzunehmen schien. In den letzten Jahren schwappte diese Welle schulischer Gewalttaten auch nach Deutschland über und fand ihren traurigen Höhepunkt im Erfurter Schulmassaker im April 2002, bei dem der 19-jährige Robert Steinhäuser in nur wenigen Minuten 16 Menschenleben auslöschte, bevor er sich selbst tötete. Die (vermeintliche) Ursache für dieses tragische Ereignis war schnell gefunden: Robert Steinhäuser hatte in hohem Maße gewalttätige Computerspiele gespielt sowie gehäuft "Blut triefende" Gewaltfilme konsumiert. Sicherlich kann man versuchen, einen ursächlichen Zusammenhang zwischen der Tat des Robert Steinhäuser und seiner regelmäßigen Rezeption von fiktiver Gewalt herzustellen, indem man der Frage nachgeht, ob Medien sich für Mordtaten verantwortlich zeigen müssen. Allerdings zeigte sich schon bei den ersten Literaturrecherchen zu dieser Arbeit, dass bereits die Frage, ob mediale Gewaltdarstellungen überhaupt eine Steigerung der Aggressivität von Kindern und Jugendlichen bewirken können, den Umfang dieser Arbeit zu übersteigen drohte. Daher erschien eine Eingrenzung auf die Auseinandersetzung mit oben genannter Problematik angebracht. Allerdings wird man, wenn man sich mit der Medienwirkungsforschung, die sich bereits seit den 1920er Jahren intensiv mit der Wirkung von Gewaltdarstellungen beschäftigt, auseinandersetzt, keine klare Antwort auf diese Fragestellung erhalten. Beliebt ist schon seit der Einführung des Fernsehens die These, so genannte Schundfilme, in denen Gewalt eine große Rolle spielt, hätten eine Zunahme der Gewalttätigkeit in unserer Gesellschaft zur Folge. Auf der anderen Seite existieren Standpunkte, die jegliche Wirkung von medialer Gewalt abstreiten. Zwischen diesen extremen Ansichten stehen Wissenschaftler, deren Ansicht nach weder von einer monokausalen Wirkung noch von einer Nicht-Wirkung ausgegangen werden kann. Sie plädieren für eine Einbeziehung des Umfeldes und insbesondere der familiären Situation, um der Frage nach möglichen Wirkungen von Gewaltdarstellungen auf Kinder und Jugendliche gerecht zu werden. Und obwohl zu keinem Bereich der Medienwirkungsforschung mehr Untersuchungen vorliegen, ist die Publikations flut ungebrochen. Bis heute wurden über 5000 Studien zu diesem Thema gezählt, wobei die Quantität angesichts der herrschenden Uneinigkeit oder stellenweise gar Widersprüchlichkeit der Forschungsergebnisse nicht zwangsläufig auf deren Qualität schließen lässt. Verursacht die Gewaltdarstellung im Fernsehen reale Gewalt? Betrachtet man den öffentlichen Diskurs, scheint diese Frage längst überflüssig. Bei jeder spektakulären Gewalttat, besonders durch Jugendliche, entflammt die Diskussion erneut. Mangels plausibler Erklärungen wird das Fernsehen zum Sündenbock. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich im Folgenden mit eben dieser Frage. Denn unter Experten wurde der direkte Schluss vom Inhalt auf die Wirkung längst negiert. Aber auch die noch in den 70er Jahren vertretene „These der Wirkungslosigkeit“ ist heute nicht mehr haltbar. Eine empirisch gesicherte Antwort auf diese Wirkungsfrage gibt es nicht und kann es nicht geben, da sich nicht nur die Medienlandschaft permanent verändert, sondern auch Wirkungen an sich im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder Veränderungen, ja gar einem „Verfallsdatum“2 unterliegen. Diese Tatsache weist auf die Problematik der vorliegenden Arbeit hin. Sie kann aufgrund der Komplexität keinen Anspruch auf Berücksichtigung sämtlicher Aspekte des Themengebiets erheben. Stattdessen soll versucht werden, einen Überblick über die Thematik zu geben und auf besonders interessante und prägnante Aspekte vertiefend einzugehen. Als fester Teil im kindlichen Alltag kann von dem Leitmedium Fernsehen als einer neuen Sozialisationsinstanz, neben den Eltern, gesprochen werden. Junge Rezipienten sind den Wirkungen der Fernsehinhalte besonders stark ausgesetzt, da sie bis zu einem Alter von 10 bis 11 Jahren längst nicht alle Geschehnisse auf dem Bildschirm kognitiv nachvollziehen können. 3 Aus diesem Grund bilden sie die in dieser Arbeit untersuchte Personengruppe.
