Book excerpt: There comes a time in each mans life when he will stand before another, and give an accounting. It is a moment of inventory, reconciliation and reflection, an opportunity to acknowledge, and perhaps a time to ask for forgiveness. That time has come for Monroe. His hard life stares back at him in an unflinching mirror of pain, despair, success, failure, and fl ashes of unbridled joy. He confesses with candid detail a journey of confusion, fear, and unanticipated courage. from the counter-culture commune of California to the war-torn peril and horror of third world conflict, Monroe strives to recall the passages of a lost soul, a warrior, a lover, a devoted father, and a loyal friend. He is a young man frightened by love, and challenged with heartbreak and loneliness on his cross-country quest to discover himself. He is a grown man torn by the moral dilemmas presented between impulse and action, between fierceness and gentle peace. He is the intuitive combatant struggling to balance patriotism and duty, arrogance and humility. Overwhelmed with a sense of liberation, he presents himself to the deity he thinks he knows, to receive the judgment he fears to accept.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Analytical Writing Adrienne Robins explains college writing as a process of discovery, as a series of strategies that any college student can learn to apply. All strategies explained in this text are based on sound theories of teaching writing and on the patterns of successful writers. Writing and thinking should not be separated, and presenting only the steps without the accompanying explanation of how they influence thinking would be of little more help than having no method at all. By using this text the students will see as they plan, draft, and revise how their writing helps clarify their thoughts. This clearly written and engaging textbook is illustrated by real examples of student writing and appropriate cartoons. The second edition was revised and updated based on the large-scale evaluation of the first edition completed by professors and students. The new edition reflects four essential values: recognizing the diversity of writing processes, the necessity of peer and teacher interaction with the writer on drafts, the integration of writing and reading, and the appropriate uses of technology. Specific features of this second edition include: -new writing samples -electronic citation formats -updated library use chapter with technological guidance -concise paragraph chapter -revised introduction and conclusion chapter -rhetorical as well as grammatical explanations for punctuation usage -new cartoons -exercises drawn from students' papers -a condensed chapter on research papers -and an expanded, and clearer, chapter on special assignments and other writing tasks A Collegiate Press book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first instance of pre-computer fractals was noted by the French mathematician Gaston Julia. He wondered what a complex polynomial function would look like, such as the ones named after him (in the form of z2 + c, where c is a complex constant with real and imaginary parts). The idea behind this formula is that one takes the x and y coordinates of a point z, and plug them into z in the form of x + i*y, where i is the square root of -1, square this number, and then add c, a constant. Then plug the resulting pair of real and imaginary numbers back into z, run the operation again, and keep doing that until the result is greater than some number. The number of times you have to run the equations to get out of an 'orbit' not specified here can be assigned a colour and then the pixel (x,y) gets turned that colour, unless those coordinates can't get out of their orbit, in which case they are made black. Later it was Benoit Mandelbrot who used computers to produce fractals. A basic property of fractals is that they contain a large degree of self similarity, i.e., they usually contain little copies within the original, and these copies also have infinite detail. That means the more you zoom in on a fractal, the more detail you get, and this keeps going on forever and ever. The well-written book 'Getting acquainted with fractals' by Gilbert Helmberg provides a mathematically oriented introduction to fractals, with a focus upon three types of fractals: fractals of curves, attractors for iterative function systems in the plane, and Julia sets. The presentation is on an undergraduate level, with an ample presentation of the corresponding mathematical background, e.g., linear algebra, calculus, algebra, geometry, topology, measure theory and complex analysis. The book contains over 170 color illustrations.

The work has been modernized and published here as “Acquainted with God,” being the chief doctrine and text of the work itself which Janeway teaches his readers. He presses his readers to be “Acquainted with God” through His Son Jesus Christ. This “acquaintance” is not a mere speculative knowledge of God, but an experimental knowledge which gives God’s people unspeakable happiness throughout eternity, and a life that’s filled with the holy love of God. Being acquainted with God means that people may have, as their friend, the Savior Jesus Christ. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to navigate beginning graduate students in mathematics and engineering through a mature field of multiscale problems in homogenization theory and to provide an idea of its broad scope. An overview of a wide spectrum of homogenization techniques ranging from classical two-scale asymptotic expansions to Gamma convergence and the rapidly developing field of stochastic homogenization is presented. The mathematical proofs and definitions are supplemented with intuitive explanations and figures to make them easier to follow. A blend of mathematics and examples from materials science and engineering is designed to teach a mixed audience of mathematical and non-mathematical students.
