Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years we have witnessed the explosion of multimedia traffic on the Internet. The availability of high bandwidth connections together with the recent advances in high quality video and audio compression techniques have created a fertile ground for the growth of multimedia applications such as interactive video on demand, collaborative distance learning, and remote medical diagnosis. Furthermore, the availability of low bit rate video and audio applications (e.g., H.263 and G.728) and the proliferation of pervasive devices create a new demand for wireless multimedia communication systems. After a decade or more of research and development in multimedia networking, the research community has learned a number of lessons. First, increasing the capacity of the “best effort” networks and services does not provide an effective and permanent solution for offering a guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). Second, the integration of service and network management is a key element in providing end to end service management. Third, management techniques for Internet multimedia services must be scalable and adaptive to guarantee QoS and maintain fairness with optimal network resource.

Book excerpt: We are delighted to present the proceedings of the 8th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS 2005). The MMNS 2005 conference was held in Barcelona, Spain on October 24–26, 2005. As in previous years, the conference brought together an international audience of researchers and scientists from industry and academia who are researching and developing state-of-the-art management systems, while creating a public venue for results dissemination and intellectual collaboration. This year marked a challenging chapter in the advancement of management systems for the wider management research community, with the growing complexities of the “so-called” multimedia over Internet, the proliferation of alternative wireless networks (WLL, WiFi and WiMAX) and 3G mobile services, intelligent and high-speed networks scalable multimedia services and the convergence of computing and communications for data, voice and video delivery. Contributions from the research community met this challenge with 65 paper submissions; 33 high-quality papers were subsequently selected to form the MMNS 2005 technical program. The diverse topics in this year’s program included wireless networking technologies, wireless network applications, quality of services, multimedia, Web applications, overlay network management, and bandwidth management.

Book excerpt: The analysis of QoE is not an easy task, especially for multimedia services, because all the factors (technical and non-technical) that directly or indirectly influence the user-perceived quality have to be considered. This book describes different methods to investigate users' QoE from the viewpoint of technical and non-technical parameters using multimedia services. It discusses the subjective methods for both controlled and uncontrolled environments. Collected datasets are used to analyze users' profiles, which sheds light on key factors to help network service providers understand end-users' behavior and expectations. Important adaptive video streaming technologies are discussed that run on unmanaged networks to achieve certain QoS features. The authors present a scheduling method to allocate resources to the end-user based on users' QoE and optimizes the power efficiency of users' device for LTE-A. Lastly, two key aspects of 5G networks are presented: QoE using multimedia services (VoIP and video), and power-saving model for mobile device and virtual base station. - Features two proven methods to collect datasets for assessing the user's QoE - Investigates client-based HTTP rate adaptive video streaming algorithms over TCP protocol to regulate the user's QoE - Discusses VoIP service and focuses on a QoE driven downlink scheduling method for LTE-A technology - Introduces the concept of 'quality of experience' presenting all parameters which directly or indirectly influence the user's satisfaction within two well-used Internet services, multimedia OTT streaming and Voice over IP

Book excerpt: TRADITIONNELLEMENT ENVISAGEES DANS LE CONTEXTE DES RESEAUX A COMMUTATION DE PAQUETS FOURNISSANT UN SERVICE DE TYPE BEST-EFFORT TELS QU'INTERNET, LES APPLICATIONS MULTIMEDIA ADAPTATIVES, SONT, PAR LE JEU DE MECANISMES DIVERS (BOUCLE DE FEEDBACK, INJECTION DE REDONDANCE, CODAGE HIERARCHIQUE DE L'INFORMATION, ABSORPTION DE GIGUE) CAPABLES DE FAIRE USAGE D'UN SERVICE RESEAU DE QUALITE VARIABLE. DANS LE CADRE D'UN RESEAU A INTEGRATION DE SERVICES, LA RELAXATION DES CONTRAINTES DE QUALITE DE SERVICE (QOS) QUI DECOULE DE L'USAGE DE TELLES APPLICATIONS OFFRE L'OPPORTUNITE D'UNE FLEXIBILITE D'EXPLOITATION CONSIDERABLE ET D'UN MULTIPLEXAGE STATISTIQUE ACCRU. IL EST TOUTEFOIS IMPERATIF DE FOURNIR A CES APPLICATIONS CERTAINES GARANTIES DE QOS, EN TERMES DE SERVICE MINIMUM, DE DELAI DE TRANSMISSION BORNE, ET D'EQUITE DU PARTAGE DE LA BANDE PASSANTE MISE A LEUR DISPOSITION. CETTE THESE SE FOCALISE SUR LA DEFINITION DE MECANISMES DE CONTROLE AUTORISANT LA FOURNITURE DE TELLES GARANTIES DE SERVICE, EN CONJUGUANT LES CONTRAINTES TRADITIONNELLES DE LA COMMUNICATION MULTIMEDIA AUX SPECIFICITES EXHIBEES PAR LES APPLICATIONS ADAPTATIVES. UNE PREMIERE APPROCHE VISE A GREFFER A UNE CLASSE DE SERVICE A QOS GARANTIE UN CONTROLE D'ADMISSION PREEMPTIF, CAPABLE DE REPARTIR EQUITABLEMENT LA BANDE PASSANTE DU RESEAU ENTRE PLUSIEURS APPLICATIONS MANIPULANT DES FLUX DE DONNEES HIERARCHIQUES. DANS UNE SECONDE APPROCHE, PLUS GENERALE, UNMODELE FLUIDE D'ORDONNANCEMENT EQUITABLE DESTINE AUX NUDS DE COMMUTATION EST SPECIFIE. CE MODELE EST FONDE SUR LE PARADIGME GPS, MAIS CEPENDANT DEPOURVU DES CONTRAINTES DE CE DERNIER. L'APPROXIMATION DE CE MODELE AU TRAVERS D'UN ALGORITHME A PRIORITES DYNAMIQUES EST ENSUITE ABORDEE. L'ON MONTRE QU'UNE MISE EN UVRE A COMPLEXITE REDUITE EST POSSIBLE ET EXHIBE DE BONNES CARACTERISTIQUES DE SERVICE, RELATIVEMENT AU DELAI DE SERVICE DES PAQUETS ET AU RESPECT DE L'EQUITE DEFINIE PAR LE MODELE FLUIDE. LES PROPRIETES DE QUALITE DE SERVICE RECHERCHEES DANS LE CONTEXTE DES APPLICATIONS ADAPTATIVES SONT MISES EN EVIDENCE PAR LE BIAIS DE SIMULATIONS. PAR AILLEURS, UNE NOUVELLE APPROXIMATION DE GPS, NOMMEE SCFQ+, EST PROPOSEE
