Essas incertezas têm levado os administradores a buscarem, cada vez mais, novas informações sobre o ambiente interno e externo da organização para melhorar a eficácia da tomada de decisão e da elaboração de estratégias de negócio. Desse modo, a busca de informações no ambiente pode ser considerada uma atividade essencial para o crescimento e a sobrevivência das empresas, à medida que estas percebem a grande importância da informação como um recurso estratégico na organização. Segundo Migliato (2004) as constantes evoluções da economia mundial têm causado muitas transformações econômicas, sociais e tecnológicas, com um ritmo intenso de mudanças, exigindo que as empresas se adaptem o mais rápido possível para atuar no ambiente dinâmico que estão situadas. Uma transformação bastante visível, é a mudança tecnológica que acelera a necessidade constante de novos equipamentos, processos e produtos. Para Liczbinski (2002) as empresas são obrigadas a se adaptarem e reagirem aos novos anseios do mercado, que mudam frequentemente, está é a realidade da maioria dos negócios atuais, independente do setor ou porte. A sobrevivência no mercado, a concorrência, o aumento da competitividade são preocupações cotidianas dos administradores, que buscam revisar práticas atuais e a adotar novas práticas para adaptarem-se ao mercado. Para produzir uma efetiva alavancagem dos negócios da organização, são necessárias políticas e estratégias adequadas na área de tecnologia da informação. Os investimentos em recursos de TI (Tecnologia da Informação) podem ser tão decisivos na lucratividade quanto o foco no próprio negócio (STRÖHER, 2003). De acordo com Pacheco e Tait (2000) nos dias atuais as empresas não sobrevivem sem o uso de algumas tecnologias. Os recursos da TI são ferramentas poderosas que tanto no desenvolvimento de tarefas organizacionais rotineiras quanto na alavancagem competitiva, auxiliando as empresas de forma efetiva na gestão estratégica da informação que é responsável pela geração de informações para fins estratégicos e para obtenção de vantagem competitiva. Para o uso adequado da tecnologia existente, é necessário além do aparato tecnológico e recursos humanos qualificados, uma boa estratégia organizacional.

Book excerpt: O objetivo principal da pesquisa foi propor medidas de aperfeiçoamento dos procedimentos de gestão estratégica da informação na pequena empresa, compatíveis com suas especificidades. Para avaliar as dificuldades e possibilidades das pequenas empresas no uso desses procedimentos, foi utilizado o artifício de compará-los aos procedimentos utilizados pela média e grande empresa. A gestão estratégica da informação vem se tornando cada vez mais presente no dia-a-dia das empresas. Porém, nas pequenas empresas isso é realizado de uma maneira peculiar devido às suas especificidades, que apresentam diferenças significativas em sua forma organizacional. Os métodos de pesquisa foram delineados para duas fases: na primeira fase foi quantitativa, tendo como objetivo principal atualizar o mapeamento das empresas hoteleiras da região central do estado de São Paulo, além de compreender as principais características dessas empresas e de seus dirigentes. Na segunda, optou-se pelo emprego do método comparativo de casos e pela pesquisa qualitativa; para a coleta de dados fez-se uso de entrevistas, além da observação livre. Entre os principais resultados, constatou-se que as empresas estudadas se apóiam em fontes de informações informais para tomada de decisão. Foi possível afirmar que no primeiro momento do processo estratégico as informações informais e pessoais são mais valorizadas, mas ao passo em que uma estratégia se estabelece todos os procedimentos da GEI facilitam a continuidade do que foi estabelecido. A GEI foi identificada como consciente e compartilhada nas grandes empresas, enquanto que nas pequenas é inconsciente e centralizada.
