Download or read book Princes of the Church written by David Rollason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Princes of the Church brings together the latest research exploring the importance of bishops’ palaces for social and political history, landscape history, architectural history and archaeology. It is the first book-length study of such sites since Michael Thompson’s Medieval Bishops’ Houses (1998), and the first work ever to adopt such a wide-ranging approach to them in terms of themes and geographical and chronological range. Including contributions from the late Antique period through to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it deals with bishops’ residences in England, Scotland, Wales, the Byzantine Empire, France, and Italy. It is structured in three sections: design and function, which considers how bishops’ palaces and houses differed from the palaces and houses of secular magnates, in their layout, design, furnishings, and functions; landscape and urban context, which considers the relationship between bishops’ palaces and houses and their political and cultural context, the landscapes and towns or cities in which they were set, and the parks, forests, and towns that were planned and designed around them; and architectural form, which considers the extent of shared features between bishops’ palaces and houses, and their relationship to the houses of other Church potentates and to the houses of secular magnates.
Book Synopsis The Matter of Kings' Lives by : Thea Summerfield
Download or read book The Matter of Kings' Lives written by Thea Summerfield and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhymed chronicles by Pierre de Langtoft and Robert Mannyng, written between c.1305 and 1338, form a unique pair in the history of English literature and historiography. Both were written in the North of England, both deal with the history of the kings of England from Brutus to the death of Edward I in July 1307. Yet the differences between them are significant. Langtoft wrote in Anglo-Norman with a specific purpose and a specific audience in mind. Robert Mannyng translated a large part of Langtoft's work into English for a very different kind of audience. Although he stayed close to his source-text in many places, his deviations offer insights into the way the English clergy and the public they addressed viewed themselves, their history and their future. The Matter of Kings' Lives is of interest to social and political historians, especially those interested in the reign of Edward I and Anglo-Scottish relations, and to literary historians who may find that these works have more to offer than has hitherto been realized.

Book Synopsis Border Liberties and Loyalties by : Matthew L. Holford
Download or read book Border Liberties and Loyalties written by Matthew L. Holford and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the organisation of power and society in north-east England over two crucial centuries in the emergence of the English 'state'. England is usually regarded as medieval Europe's most centralised kingdom, yet the North-East was dominated by liberties - largely self-governing jurisdictions - that greatly restricted the English crown's direct authority in the region. These local polities receive here their first comprehensive discussion; and their histories are crucial for understanding questions of state-formation in frontier zones, regional distinctiveness, and local and national loyalties. The analysis focuses on liberties as both governmental entities and sources of socio-political and cultural identification. It also connects the development of liberties and their communities with a rich variety of forces, including the influence of the kings of Scots as lords of Tynedale, and the impact of protracted Anglo-Scottish warfare from 1296. Why did liberties enjoy such long-term relevance as governance structures? How far, and why, did the English monarchy respect their autonomous rights and status? By what means, and how successfully, were liberty identities created, sharpened and sustained? In addressing such issues, this ground-breaking study extends beyond regional history to make significant contributions to the ongoing mainstream debates about 'state', 'society', 'identity' and 'community'.

Book Synopsis The Durham Liber Vitae: Prosopographical commentary by : British Library
Download or read book The Durham Liber Vitae: Prosopographical commentary written by British Library and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Durham Liber Vitae, a sumptuous manuscript created in ninth-century Northumbria containing lists of 3,000 names of royalty, aristocracy, and churchmen, is one of only three books of its type to survive from medieval Britain. Updated sporadically in the tenth and eleventh centuries, it became a repository for the names of monks at Durham Cathedral Priory up until the Dissolution, and later included the names of lay persons through the Middle Ages--some from the royalty and aristocracy, but many from much humbler levels of society. Durham Liber Vitae: The Complete Edition brings the Liber Vitae to life, unlocking its considerable potential for a range of studies in linguistics, religious history, and paleaeography. Supported by a high-resolution digital facsimile on CD-ROM, introductions to the manuscript, extensive indexes, and full linguistic commentaries on absolutely all recorded names, Durham Liber Vitae: The Complete Edition is an essential volume for scholars of medieval English history.
