Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his pathbreaking book, Leadership, James MacGregor Burns defines a kind of leadership with an indistinguishable personal impact on society. He calls this "transformal" leadership, and sees it as more than routine and calculable responses to demands. In fact, he argues, the more stable a liberal democracy, the less freedom of action for transformal leadership. Anton Pelinka uses a wellspring of historical fact to argue that politics always means having to choose between the lesser of two evils and that democracy reduces any possibility of personal leadership.According to Pelinka, Jaruzelski's politics of democratization in Poland in the 1980s (which led to the first free and competitive elections in a communist system) illustrate personal leadership hampered by democracy. Jaruzelski initiated the roundtable process that transformed Poland into a democracy; yet, this process ultimately ended with his abdication. Pelinka further emphasizes contradictions between transformal leadership and democracy by comparing the leadership styles of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. He de-.scribes collaboration, resistance, and tensions between domestic and international leadership, using the American examples of Presidents Wilson, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon and the European examples of Petain and Churchill. Pelinka then turns to the tragic fate of the Judenrate under the Nazi regime to illustrate the "lesser-evil" approach. He closes with a discussion of "moral leadership" and how abstaining from office, just as Gandhi and King did, may be particularly suited to stable democracies.Pelinka's unique use of rich empirical evidence from twentieth-century history is this volume's hallmark. He is critical of mainstream political theory and its neglect of deviant examples of democracies - such as Switzerland, Italy, and Japan, where there is traditionally much less emphasis placed on leadership. Pelinka's noteworthy study will be essential reading for political scientists and theorists, political philosophers and political sociologists with special interest in political ethics, and contemporary historians.

Book excerpt: Over 200 previously unpublished photographs document the building and development of the many check points, barbed wire barriers, and alarmed fences which formed the concrete wall around Berlin. This book tells dramatic tales of spectacular escapes and terrible deaths, and explains the history making events surrounding the building and fall of the Wall. Contemporary photographs are contrasted with photographs from the eighties to offer surprising insights into how the former death strip has changed since 1990. Relics of the wall in the current cityscape are prominently illustrated, including remnants of the Wall itself, expanded metal lattice fences, observation towers, barbed wire and concrete posts. Also included are statistics showing the numbers of refugees and victims of the Wall, a guide to the museums and memorials and a summary of the literature and cinema treatment of the Wall, along with a brief chronicle of its history.

Book excerpt: Of all the most iconic figures covered by Norman Mailer in his esteemed career—including Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe, Gary Gilmore, Lee Harvey Oswald, Pablo Picasso—no one fascinated him more than John F. Kennedy, whose presidential campaign was the subject of Mailer’s first foray into political journalism. First published in Esquire’s November 1960 issue, the essay, which is widely considered a key turning point in the dawn of New Journalism, is on the magazine’s list of its 7 greatest stories ever published and is forever enshrined in journalism history. This book revisits the seminal text with a broad selection of photographs and memorabilia. Fans of both Mailer and JFK will rejoice in this book, whose release coincides with the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination.

Book excerpt: Eva Hesse’s later works are fascinating—not least because of her unusual materials Eva Hesse (1936–1970) is one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century. Born in Hamburg, she immigrated to New York via the Netherlands in 1938. Even though Hesse died of a brain tumor at the age of just thirty-four, she left behind a fascinating, highly individual body of work. In the mid-sixties she began experimenting with new materials that had never before been used to produce art objects, such as polyester, fiberglass, and latex. Hesse’s sculptures, which are now included in the collections of major museums around the world, are unique combinations of complex and occasionally contradictory qualities, such as hard and soft, fragile and substantial, abstract and figuratively evocative. This lavishly illustrated book concentrates on sculptures and drawings from the years 1966 to 1970, the last phase of the American artist’s work. -- Publisher’s description.
