Book Synopsis The Politics of West German Trade Unions by : Andrei Markovits
Download or read book The Politics of West German Trade Unions written by Andrei Markovits and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this book assesses the politics of the West German trade unions in the context of their larger role as major actors in the polity. By focusing on the historical realities of the labour movement both before and after 1945, the study explains the extent to which organized labour solidified and challenged the dominant structures of politics and authority. It examines the metalworkers’ union, the construction workers’ union, the printers’ union and the chemical workers’ union and shows how the industrial reality of each organisation helped shape its political outlook and strategic thinking. This book will be of particular interest to students of trade unions, industrial relations and political economy in West Germany.
Book Synopsis Developments in German Industrial Relations by : Gerd Grözinger
Download or read book Developments in German Industrial Relations written by Gerd Grözinger and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a review of the last twenty years of research in German industrial relations. Divided into three parts, it begins by exploring the major developments in this field of research. It then describes the academic field of industrial relations in Germany from different perspectives, looking back on twenty years of “Industrielle Beziehungen” – the German Journal of Industrial Relations. This is rounded off by an analysis of the changes in the real world of the German model and its major institutions, namely the DGB trade unions and co-determination on the establishment-level. In addition, the book discusses the contributions of neighbouring disciplines, particularly human resource management, economics, and labour law. As the German model and its developments are interesting not only for researchers in industrial relations, but also for practitioners in business and administration, this volume addresses both groups of readers.

Book Synopsis Care or Control of the Self? Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault, and the Subject in the 21st Century by : Andrea D. Bührmann
Download or read book Care or Control of the Self? Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault, and the Subject in the 21st Century written by Andrea D. Bührmann and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the 21st century is characterized by fundamental societal changes: in addition to changing demographics and the globalization of economic flows, the transformation of an industrial-Fordistic society to a non-industrial service society is significant. For more than twenty years, these large-scale trends and their inherent chances and risks have been the topic of vivid discussions in all the social sciences. Keywords are ‘risk-society’, ‘post-industrial society’, ‘knowledge-society’ and ‘information-society’. The implications of these developments are also reflected in the challenge to the traditional, hegemonic and rational understanding of subjectivity. Against the background of these great social changes, several factors indicate that the forms of self-regulation or self-governance are also being transformed. A one-sided consideration of the homo economicus and its varieties would underestimate, for example, certain non-rational forms of self-perception and self-reflection, as well as non-rational practices of self-management and subjectivation. The aim of this anthology is to discuss the question, to what extent the relationship to oneself (its regulation with respect to its governance) and the relationship towards others in (post-)modern societies are being transformed. The perspective of Norbert Elias’ process sociology as well as Michel Foucault’s post-structural theory seem especially promising, as they appear to have been the first researchers consistently and convincingly analysing the ‘nature’ of the individual by reflecting upon its long-term historical process of transformation. Both have different visions but similar concerns: they deal with structures of control that exist within society and within the individual.
Book Synopsis Globalization, Uncertainty and Women’s Careers by : Hans-Peter Blossfeld
Download or read book Globalization, Uncertainty and Women’s Careers written by Hans-Peter Blossfeld and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-06-27 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, Uncertainty and Women's Careers assesses the effects of globalization on the life courses of women in thirteen countries across Europe and America in the second half of the 20th century. The book represents the first-ever longitudinal analysis of micro-level data from these OECD countries focusing exclusively on women's relationship to the labor market in a globalizing world. The contributors thoroughly examine women's employment entries, exits and job mobility and present evidence of women's increased labor market attachment and reduced employment quality in most of the countries studied. They also systematically consider the life course changes influenced by larger transformations in society and, in doing so, explicitly link the phenomena of globalization to individual women's lives in Europe and North America.

Book Synopsis Comparative Studies of Social Structure by : Wolfgang Teckenberg
Download or read book Comparative Studies of Social Structure written by Wolfgang Teckenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays with the purpose of stimulate interest and provoke discussion and criticism, and so contributing to our understanding of the three very different societies of France, the USA and Germany. Each essay stands on its own, and it is the authors’ intention to explain some of the differences between Germany and the United States in the first article. The second essay suggests that career mobility in France has more in common with social mobility in the United States than in Germany. The third essay, while not an explicitly comparative analysis, was included because it clearly shows the close links between the educational and occupational systems in Germany, a source of major differences with the United States, at least until the 1980s. The last section contains analyses of income attainment. Drawing on studies in the United States conducted by Erik O. Wright, the fourth essay compares the effects of education and position on income attainment. Since these can be construed as class effects, we were also curious about other types of potential positional and nonvertical income differences in a comparison of France, the United States, and the Federal Republic of Germany (the fifth essay). The concluding summary is very brief, giving only preliminary answers to the more detailed questions raised in the comparative empirical research projects.
