Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This regional project was thus requested to prepare a list of the Tropical Fruit Germplasm available in the wider Caribbean and beyond, and make it accessible to the interested institutions. In March 1994, the First Programming Meeting of the Caribbean Committee for the Magagement of Plant Genetic Resources (CMPGR) met in Puerto Rico and recommended that IICA finalize and distribute the Fruit Germplasm Accession List already available. Although most of the information presented here was gathered in 1993, it took quite a long time to put it together, since the formats used to record the list of germplasm differed greatly according to the countries, the instutions and the groups of fruits. This is the first. It is a preliminary document which needs to be completed and updated. Initially, we had planned to distribute it on diskettes but we realized that this would have been premature. We have to think about developing a specific interactive database, easy to access and use in any kind of computer environment, and easy to update. This will take some time, but we may be able to start before the end of the year. Finally, we would like to thank all the institutions which provided us with the information. We need more, and we need to update the existing document. We would like also to receive your comments and suggestions about this work. This is critical to the updating process.

Book excerpt: Buckwheat Germplasm in the World offers an overview of this globally important crop, including its general characterization and genetic diversity—particularly in Russia, China, India and Eastern Europe. The book presents the latest research on molecular marker development, genetics and phenotype analysis of new wild buckwheat to examine the nutritional values of this pseudocereal crop. Due to its short growth span, ability to grow at high altitudes and the high quality of its protein content, buckwheat is considered an important crop for addressing global food needs. Ideal for researchers and advanced-level students seeking better understanding of the buckwheat germplasm. Summarizes all the reported and distributed buckwheat species in the world Offers researchers the ability to exchange resources with each other to breed new cultivars Classifies buckwheat species based on perennial and annual from their growth span, and self-incompatible or self-compatible from their flower morphology and characterization Facilitates hybridization of different species

As grain cereals, including rice, wheat, maize, barley, sorghum, and millets constitute the bulk of global diets, both of vegetarian and non-vegetarian, there is a greater need for further genetic improvement, breeding, and plant genetic resources to secure the future food supply. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers, crop biologists, and students working with crop development and the changes in environmental climate that have had significant impact on crop production. It includes the latest information on tactics that ensure that environmentally robust genes and crops resilient to climate change are identified and preserved. Provides a single-volume resource on the global research work on grain cereals genetics and genomics Presents information for effectively managing and utilizing the genetic resources of this core food supply source Includes coverage of rice, wheat, maize, barley, sorghum, and pearl, finger and foxtail millets
