Book excerpt: The new edition of Seeds contains new information on many topics discussed in the first edition, such as fruit/seed heteromorphism, breaking of physical dormancy and effects of inbreeding depression on germination. New topics have been added to each chapter, including dichotomous keys to types of seeds and kinds of dormancy; a hierarchical dormancy classification system; role of seed banks in restoration of plant communities; and seed germination in relation to parental effects, pollen competition, local adaption, climate change and karrikinolide in smoke from burning plants. The database for the world biogeography of seed dormancy has been expanded from 3,580 to about 13,600 species. New insights are presented on seed dormancy and germination ecology of species with specialized life cycles or habitat requirements such as orchids, parasitic, aquatics and halophytes. Information from various fields of science has been combined with seed dormancy data to increase our understanding of the evolutionary/phylogenetic origins and relationships of the various kinds of seed dormancy (and nondormancy) and the conditions under which each may have evolved. This comprehensive synthesis of information on the ecology, biogeography and evolution of seeds provides a thorough overview of whole-seed biology that will facilitate and help focus research efforts. Most wide-ranging and thorough account of whole-seed dormancy available Contains information on dormancy and germination of more than 14,000 species from all the continents – even the two angiosperm species native to the Antarctica continent Includes a taxonomic index so researchers can quickly find information on their study organism(s) and Provides a dichotomous key for the kinds of seed dormancy Topics range from fossil evidence of seed dormancy to molecular biology of seed dormancy Much attention is given to the evolution of kinds of seed dormancy Includes chapters on the basics of how to do seed dormancy studies; on special groups of plants, for example orchids, parasites, aquatics, halophytes; and one chapter devoted to soil seed banks Contains a revised, up-dated classification scheme of seed dormancy, including a formula for each kind of dormancy Detailed attention is given to physiological dormancy, the most common kind of dormancy on earth

Book excerpt: [Truncated] Across the globe, recognition and prioritisation of restoration ecology as a rapidly growing scientific field has never been more important to ensure we can implement large-scale and cost-effective restoration of biodiverse plant communities in a cost efficient manner. With this, re-establishing plant cover of framework species that stabilise degraded sites is one key method currently implemented to contribute to landscape scale restoration in arid systems. Yet, for regions such as the Pilbara in the northwest of Australia, rapid expansion of the mining sector has led to an unprecedented level of land clearing. To date, the current vegetation clearance for resource development in the region exceeds 120,000 ha and restoration attempts fail to reinstate the desired levels of plant diversity and vegetation cover at the scale and pace to meet the degrading influences. Given that less than 10% of sown seed results in an establishment event, considerable effort needs to be placed on understanding the reasons behind these establishment shortfalls. This study focussed on seed dormancy and germination traits as a key limiting step in the chain of seed-use, embracing the understanding that seed dormancy is a major impediment to restoration efforts, and any improvement in the quality and germination potential of a seed batch prior to sowing will provide a higher likelihood of restoration success. Therefore three core themes in this thesis were investigated: (1) a Pilbara-wide classification of seed dormancy and an assessment of the influence of temperature and chemical stimulants on germination patterns, (2) optimisation of dry afterripening (DAR) methods for seeds of a key framework genus, Triodia, with direct comparisons of physiological dormancy alleviation for florets versus seeds, and (3) the effects of wet and dry heat treatments on physical dormancy alleviation and germination of seeds from the Fabaceae and Malvaceae families.

Book excerpt: "Mining in arid regions of Australia is followed by restoration and rehabilitation efforts. However, attempts to reintroduce many woody plant species have been unsuccessful. Water is the key limiting resource to plant growth and seed germination in arid zones. In this thesis, I investigated ecophysiological processes that may help improve recruitment across novel arid landscapes. I tested seed traits and dormancy cues of eight keystone plants and found that six of them had non-dormant, rapidly germinating seeds; a trait we propose is an adaptation to the region's unpredictable rainfall. To identify the germination niche of species, I incubated seeds under different temperatures and water potentials, and found drought avoidance to be an important survival strategy for arid species. I collected soil samples to compare biophysicochemical properties of reconstructed soils to remnant ecosystems, and found that the distribution of clay content in the reconstructed soils did not mirror the remnant soils, compromising their ability to sustain perennial vegetation. I also monitored soil moisture and found that soil reconstruction reduces rainfall infiltration and retention, and subsequently increases evaporation. The synthesis of these results demonstrate some of the limitations to successful restoration in these systems, such as (1) unknown dormancy cues and poor seed longevity, (2) infrequent and episodic plant recruitment due to water limitation, and (3) reduced hydrological function of reconstructed soils. The failure to reinstate hydrological function is the major constraint to ecological restoration in this arid zone. Nonetheless, results from this study suggest that restoration is possible through more strategic use of seed, careful selection of drought tolerant species, and increasing soil moisture. Further failures to reinstate ecosystem function and community dynamics in arid zones with reconstructed soils can be prevented by understanding the edaphic constraints to plant establishment, and ameliorating conditions to mimic ecohydrological processes in remnant ecosystems." -- Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pilbara region in Australia’s arid northwest is rich in flora that is suited to extreme temperatures and boom and bust cycles of moisture availability. It is also a region important for its natural resources. In places where mining activities have finished and the land is under management for ecological restoration, there is increasing demand for information about native plant communities and the biology of their seeds. Pilbara Seed Atlas and Field Guide is the first book to combine plant identification with robust, scientific criteria for cost-effective seed-based rehabilitation. It describes 103 regional plant taxa and provides guidelines for effective collection, cleaning, storage and germination of their seeds. It addresses issues such as timing of collection, quality and viability of seed, and dormancy release, which are essential for successful restoration programs. With photographs to portray the subtle differences and unique features of each species’ biology, this book will be of great use to practitioners in the field, including environmental consultants, rehabilitation companies, commercial seed collectors and government authorities, as well as naturalists and people interested in growing the Pilbara’s remarkable plants.
