Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of German Literature IN writing this volume, it was my task to compress more than a thousand years of literary history into a volume of about four hundred pages. The book was not to be a collection of sheaths garnered here and there in favourite fields, but a real history, dealing with the whole subject coherently and with due regard to the relative importance of periods, writers, and writings. As it was evident that I should be obliged to omit freely and boldly, I decided, first of all, to omit the scholars, philosophers, and men of science, that is, to confine myself pretty closely to literature in the restricted English sense of the word. The broader conception of literature is no doubt the more philosophic, but it is less convenient for a writer who must economise space at every step. The German genius has done much of its best work in scholarship, philosophy, and science, but I was not writing a history of the German genius. The first chapter traces the roots of German nationality back to the period preceding the Aryan separation, and presents a picture of the intellectual condition of our forefathers at the time when they became known to the Romans. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. As the selections were made, for the most part, while I was writing my own short history of German literature for the series published under the general editorship of Mr. Edmund Gosse and known as Literatures of the World, it was natural that the Anthology should take on, to some extent, the charac ter of a companion book to the History. At the same time I did not desire that either book should necessari involve the use of the other. Hence the absence of cross references; and hence also, in the Ah thology, the brief introductory notes, giving important dates and sum mary characterizations. These are meant to enable the student to read the selections intelligently without constant recourse to some other book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Early German Literature While from an ideal point of view it might seem desirable that students of German literature should be acquainted with Old and Middle High German, yet such a plan would, of course, be impracticable for elementary College classes and for High Schools. On the other hand, students of German literature should have an occasion to become acquainted with abstracts, at least, or specimens of the authors discussed by the instructor; and it would appear preferable to have such specimens in Modern German rather than to lay them before the pupils in an English translation, because it is possible in this way to keep nearer to the originals as regards both the form and the spirit. The editor's intention was to make use of such translations only in which the meter of the original is observed. A few exceptions from this rule, however, proved necessary in cases where no suitable translations in the original meter were available (Nos. 42 and 43, 49-51, 61, 70-81). A few specimens of alliterative poetry from Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon have been added, which, though not strictly belonging to Ger-man literature, yet serve to illustrate, and are almost necessary for the understanding of contemporary Old High German and Old Low German poetry. While the order of the selections is chronological, an exception to this rule has been made in case of the younger versions of the story of Hildebrand and Hadubrand (Nos. 5 and 6). Nor did it seem advisable to separate the A.-S. Waldhere Fragments (Nos. 40 and 41) from the Waltharius Manu Fortis. As regards orthography and punctuation, it seemed preferable to adopt the present official rules rather than to preserve the more or less different methods in the various versions. Otherwise these versions have been altered as little as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of German Literature This little volume aims at nothing more ambitious than to give an outline of the growth of German literature; but while it may serve as an introduction to a more in timate acquaintance with the subject, the author hopes that readers who, without the leisure to pursue the study in larger works, may wish to know something of the men and women whose genius has illuminated the intellectual progress of Germany, may find this Primer sufficiently comprehensive to satisfy that desire. The author is gratified to learn from her publishers that a sixth edition of this Primer has been called for, and has sought, by a thorough revision, to make it worthy of continued approval for the object for which it was prepared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: Masterpieces of German Literature Translated Into English French influences, almost as early as Hebrew or German, were among the formative forces brought to bear upon the quick-witted but not precocious boy. Heine's parents were orthodox, but by no means bigoted Jews. We read with amazement that one of the plans of the mother, ambitious for her firstborn, was to make of him a Roman Catholic priest. The boy's father, Samson Heine, was a' rather nu successful member of a family which in other representa tives - particularly Samson's brother Salomon in Hamburg - attained to wealth and prominence in the world of finance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Influence of German Literature in America It is in the nature of things impossible to draw a sharp boundary line between different phases of literary development. It has been deemed advisable, however, to confine these observa tions to a period including and antedating the first quarter of our century. This is a period upon which the historian looks with somewhat unj ustifiable soreness of heart it is the time of plentiful American reprints of the issues of the English press, with but few original contributions of any value. The mournful complaint of the American author of the time about want of encouragement dins in our ears on turning over the pages of long-forgotten American reviews. It was hard for him to realize, or, when realized, to acquiesce in the fact that it was impossible for him to compete with the accepted classics of English literature and the new developments of the end of the last and beginning of the new century. A literary movement, however, cannot be made to order, and we do well to derive some satisfaction from the fact that the American public, with much trash, read much that was valuable, even though not a native product. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Germany The golden Middle Age gorgeous upon earth again as other mediaeval literatures; but it gives us more penetrating glimpses into the inner life of the denizen of the Middle Ages, and thereby awakens a sympathetic interest in the modern reader. Its interpretation, again, Of that great new-birth which we associate with the word Reformation appears in the still modern form of a liberation of the individual from a world that took no stock of individuals. Lastly, the great German literature of the eighteenth century deals constantly with problems, ethic as well as aesthetic, which are as vital and. Real to us today as they were to that far-off time. We have to accept frankly the comparative absence of the formal beauty which the Latin peoples of Europe can point to in their literatures Germany has no Dante, Ariosto or Tasso; no Lope de Vega; no Corneille or Moliere but, on the other hand, her essential contribution to the wealth of the world's imagination has always centred in the interpretation of heart and soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of German Literature If we turn back two hundred years, we find the reading men of England, if they have time to go beyond their own authors, giving their attention, among moderns, to the Italians and Spanish. As yet in Europe only Italy and Spain, besides England, had seen the rise of literatures of sufficient moment to influence the cultivated world beyond the national limits. Dante, Petrarch, Boceaceio, Ariosto, Tasso, Machiavelli had lived, and these are still the greatest Italian names. In Spain, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Calderon had done their work, - work which no succeeding writers of that land have equalled. If we go back one hundred years, the literature of France has taken the place in the estimation of the English once held by the writers of Spain and Italy; the brilliant men of the age of Louis XIV have laid the world under their spell. In our time, again, the influence of France has been, to a large extent, supplanted. Following especially the lead of two of the most gifted Englishmen of the century, Coleridge and Carlyle, the present generation turns with most reverence to the Germans, often regarding their literature as the most important in the world, after our own, if, indeed, we are to make that exception. It will scarcely be questioned that some knowledge of the history of German literature is, to English-speaking persons, an essential part of thorough culture.
