Book Synopsis Libraries and the Information Society in Germany by : Engelbert Plassmann
Download or read book Libraries and the Information Society in Germany written by Engelbert Plassmann and published by Harrassowitz. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Libraries and the Information Society in Germany presents, for the first time, the contemporary German library system not from a library insider's view, but rather from a comprehensively societal perspective. The roles and functions of libraries are analyzed and assessed from this vantage point. The authors - both researchers and practitioners - identify historical developments, describe current trends taking into account sociostructural contexts, and outline options for action. The changes that libraries and library science can embrace and have already embraced in part include, in addition to functional changes and systematic networking, possibly approaching other segments of the information sector or even merging with them. This edition represents a thorough update to the most recent German edition. Several chapters expanded in parts in order to address developments such as Library 2.0, the Semantic Web, Linked Open Data, or Electronic Resource Management.
Book Synopsis Public Libraries in Nazi Germany by : Margaret Stieg Dalton
Download or read book Public Libraries in Nazi Germany written by Margaret Stieg Dalton and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant questions about Nazi Germany are examined from the point of view of the public library: Was national socialism an aberration from traditional German values or was it a logical development of those traditions? Did the Nazi state carry through a true revolution or did revolutionary rhetoric merely camouflage a power grab? What relationships existed between local governments and the central government? What role did the party play? The book also provides a detailed analysis of the administrative organization, policies, and programs of German public libraries between 1933 and 1945, treating the subject on its own terms. The Nazi period was dramatic and destructive, yet was a critical phase in the development of German public libraries. To serve the ends of national socialism, the new regime brought an institution adrift in a backwater into the mainstream.

Book Synopsis The Genesis of German Conservatism by : Klaus Epstein
Download or read book The Genesis of German Conservatism written by Klaus Epstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Conservative parties did not exist in Germany until after the Napoleonic Wars, there did emerge, around 1770, traceable organized political activity and intellectual currents of a clearly Conservative character. The author argues that this movement developed as a response to the challenge of the Enlightenment in the fields of religion, socioeconomic affairs, and politics- and that this response antedated the impact of the French Revolution. Believing that Conservatism cannot be treated properly as a specialized phenomenon, or simply as an intellectual movement, Professor Epstein correlates it with the political and social forces of the time. Originally published in 1966. Book Synopsis The Devil's General and Germany: Jekyll and Hyde by : Carl Zuckmayer
Download or read book The Devil's General and Germany: Jekyll and Hyde written by Carl Zuckmayer and published by Continuum. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both works in this volume - a play by Carl Zuckmayer (1896-1977) and an unusual contemporary study of Nazi Germany by Sebastian Haffner (1907-99) - bear testimony to the disturbing events that were to change German history in the aftermath of World War I. The abridged translation of The Devil's General, which was approved by Zuckmayer himself, is about a World War I flier who commits suicide as he comes to realize the unintended havoc he has wrought in his obsession to fly. Sebastian Haffner, whose real name was Raimund Pretzel (which was changed with the publication of Germany: Jekyll and Hyde), remained a controversial journalist all his life, working for both left-wing and right-wing journals. The work excerpted here was written in 1940 when Haffner, reared in a liberal tradition, was in a British detention camp as an enemy alien.
