Book excerpt: An illustrated study of the big guns of Hitler's army -– the Wehrmacht's field artillery, its capabilities and its role in German fighting units of World War II. Often overshadowed in military history by the tanks and aircraft of Blitzkrieg, Germany's artillery was key to its methods of waging war throughout World War II. Field artillery remained the primary killer on the battlefield, often responsible for three-quarters of combat casualties inflicted. Redressing the balance, this book surveys the major Wehrmacht guns of the war, and the basic organizational structure of the German field artillery. Its primary focus is on the divisional field guns, especially the lFH 18 10.5cm field howitzer and the 15cm sFH 18 field howitzer that formed the backbone of German artillery. A brief survey is also made of the infantry guns used at the regimental level, and of corps-level heavy artillery. The issue of the use of"Beutewaffen,” captured war-booty field guns, is also looked at, as is the Nebelwerfer and schwere Wurfgerät rocket artillery. With archive photos and meticulously detailed new illustrations, this book provides a concise study of the German Army's big guns of World War II, how they were organized and how they were used, both on the Eastern and Western fronts.

Book excerpt: German artillery has been a subject of study for many years, but it is rare to find the original source material for such studies. These two pamphlets were issued in 1948 and include all known operational German artillery of the Second World War. In the two volumes are no fewer than 198 plates of the guns and their ammunition, and appendices, charts and tables give every detail of the weapons that was available, even to German gunners. The books are introduced with a history of the development of German artillery, and then follow a standard layout. The guns are covered in the following order: (Part 1) antitank artillery, infantry guns, recoilless guns, Field Artillery, Medium Artillery, Heavy and super-Heavy Artillery, (Part 2) light Flak, Medium Flak, Heavy Flak, Coast Defence Artillery and Railway Artillery. Among the guns covered are the 8.8cm antitank guns, 10.5 and 15 cm field guns, the 42cm Gamma Mortar, the four-barreled Flakvierling (so feared by Allied ground attack pilots), 8.8cm Flak guns, the 15 and 24cm heavy Flak designs and the super-heavy Siegfried , Adolf, Bruno and the 80 cm Kanone E. Many books cover this subject, but none to greater detail, nor with the wealth of illustrations that make these books a prime source for all who need information of German artillery in the Second World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the outbreak of World War II approached, Nazi Germany ordered artillery manufacturers Krupp and Rheimetall-Borsig to build several super-heavy siege guns, vital to smash through French and Belgian fortresses that stood in the way of the Blitzkrieg. These 'secret weapons' were much larger than the siege artillery of World War I and included the largest artillery piece of the war, the massive 80cm railway gun 'schwere Gustav' (Heavy Gustav). However, these complex and massive artillery pieces required years to build and test and, as war drew near, the German High Command hastily brought several WWI-era heavy artillery pieces back into service and then purchased, and later confiscated, a large number of Czech Skoda mortars. The new super siege guns began entering service in time for the invasion of Russia, notably participating in the attack on the fortress of Brest-Litovsk. The highpoint for the siege artillery was the siege of Sevastopol in the summer of 1942, which saw the largest concentration of siege guns in the war. Afterwards, when Germany was on the defensive in the second half of 1943, the utility of the guns was greatly diminished, and they were employed in a piecemeal and sporadic fashion on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. In total, the German Army used some 50 siege guns during World War II, far more than the thirty-five it had during World War I. Supported by contemporary photographs and detailed artwork of the guns and their components, this is an essential guide to these guns, exploring their history, development, and deployment in stunning detail.

Book excerpt: America's semi-centennial look at the liberation of Fortress Europe. Artillery troops, constituting fewer than 10% of U.S. forces, inflicted most German casualties in their sector. The European Theatre of Operations is viewed by the artillery battalion which was attached to eight divisions & whose terrain varied from the left flank to the right flank of U.S. forces. In this wartime experiment, the men were sent directly to their wartime assignments from the reception center. The combat performance of this battalion became a testing ground for the necessity of a "boot camp." Liberating enslaved people for 268 continuous days had a remarkable effect on the soldiers. One anecdote is from an artillery observer who was with the troops that liberated Dachau. The Millen Castle Affair on the Dutch-German border terminated the careers of 35 senior German officers. The close-range direct-fire artillery duel at Nuremberg evidenced U.S. military excellence. Numerous first-person anecdotes & input from more than 100 veterans are included. U.S. & European homefront reactions to developments are cited. To order: Bull Run of Vermont, 7 Deborah, South Burlington, VT 05403-7816. $21 plus $3 P&H.

An indispensable reference work for Second World War scholars and enthusiasts, German Ground Forces of World War II captures the continuously changing character of Nazi ground forces throughout the conflict. For the first time, readers can follow the career of every German division, corps, army, and army group as the German armed forces shifted units to and from theaters of war. Organized by sections including Theater Commands, Army Groups, Armies, and Corps Commands, it presents a detailed analysis of each corresponding order of battle for every German field formation above division. This innovative resource also describes the orders of battle of the myriad German and Axis satellite formations assigned to security commands throughout occupied Europe and the combat zones, as well as those attached to fortress commands and to the commanders of German occupation forces across Europe. An accompanying narrative describes the career of each field formation and includes the background and experience of many of their most famous commanding officers.

The experiences in the trenches in World War I had done much to shape its concept of field fortification, and its mobile warfare ethos was intended to prevent the previous war's stalemate. This book addresses frontline defensive field fortifications, built by infantrymen using local materials, and includes rifle platoon positions, trenches, crew-served weapon positions, bunkers, dugouts, shelters and more. It also covers anti-tank and anti-personnel obstacles, as well as field camouflage methods and construction methods. The integration of these positions into permanent systems and theatre-specific defences are also discussed.
