Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While science was usually at the forefront of German Antarctic expeditions, research into the Southern Polar region always had a political or economic component, whether it was about resource use or securing areas of influence. Cornelia Lüdecke presents the course of the three German Antarctic expeditions from 1901-03, 1911-12 and 1938/39 with their partly dramatic turns and twists and provides insights into everyday life under extreme conditions. She also evaluates unpublished material from the archives and private estates of the expedition members. She looks at the expeditions from a scientific and political point of view and also deals with the myths associated with the "Schwabenland" expedition during the National Socialist era. Finally, the author describes German south polar research after World War II, which took different paths in the German Democratic Republic and in the Federal Republic of Germany, and gives an outlook on future research. For the first time, this book presents the history of the Germans in Antarctica in a factual and informative way for the general public. With numerous pictures, some of which have never been published before.

Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book reviews the development of science in Antarctica from its early beginnings, in the age of Captain Cook, to the present complexity of the 1980s when research teams from many nations work side by side. Three major areas, biological science, the earth sciences and atmospheric science are examined individually, highlighting the principal achievements of the past 25 years, and providing an up-to-date account of our present understanding of this frozen continent. Concern over the future of the Antarctic Treaty and the probable main directions of future research, provide an indication of the importance of Antarctica to all scientific disciplines. This unique natural laboratory for science is now being investigated by eighteen countries. International interest in Antarctica grows apace and, whatever its future use by mankind, its sensible management will require a good, scientific basis.

In order to explain Dutch Antarctic policy from the late 1950s until 1990 and to place it in a broader context, Dutch policy will be compared with the Antarctic policies of Belgium and Germany (Federal Republic of Germany, FRG) in the same period. 6 The comparison offers insights into the functioning of the ATS and into the roles - if any - of the three countries in this international regime in the period under investigation. This adds another central question to this research: How does Dutch Antarctic policy compare with the Belgian and German Antarctic policies in the same period?

This study examines the structure, meaning, and international repercussions of the Antarctic Treaty, focusing on the ways it benefits both the scientific and political communities. Chapters cover the history, science, environment, resources, and international status of Antarctica.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author spent one and half years as head of the country's first research station in Antarctica, Dakshin Gangotri. He discusses in details the frozen continent's unique environmental aspects, the international presence, world governance and the Indian Antarctic Programme (IAP). The book throws light on how perspectives and positions of leading countries represented in Antarctica, such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, US, Russia, China, Japan, Norway, South Africa and India have shaped over the years. Their strategic interests, including those in the Arctic, provide for an interesting kaleidoscope of factors with the potential for various global scenarios in the coming years. The world will be surely and anxiously watching the developments in Antarctica in future. According to the widely accepted geological theory of plate tectonics, the Indian subcontinent was once a part of the supercontinent Gondwana, so named after one of the tribes of central India, along with Antarctica, Africa, Australia and South America. However, the general awareness about the continent in India is very poor. The book in details traces the history of India's involvement in Antarctica, its three permanent stations conducting valuable scientific research and efforts to make a presence among other nations in the continent. It points out the country's total dependence on all its logistics needs by outsourcing which may prove to be detrimental to its influence and interests. It would be interesting to see how India reacts to the positions of other nations in the changing global kaleidoscope and how it will gear itself, to establish a truly influential Antarctic presence for safeguarding its own strategic interests. India may do well to lay down a polar doctrine at the earliest.

Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. Part of the resources for the future library collection on Global Environment and Development, this is the final Volume of seven. This book presents a broad-ranging study of Antarctica's history, politics, and development prospects with a command of issues in geography, science policy, technology, and international law, which is addressed with authority and flair. At this time, nations of the world are struggling to fashion a legal framework to govern Antarctic resources, which some regard as the common heritage of mankind. This debate, described vividly here, represents an ongoing application of the common-property resource concept, which has played a prominent role in RFF's research and analytical contributions during the past quarter-century. Furthermore, the continent's energy and minerals endowment-if exploitable at all (and in the author's judgment the prospects for this are dim)-constitute at best resources for the future.

Book excerpt: This volume completes the International Cartographic Association's trilogy which has been prepared to provide an "Inventory of World Topographic Mapping", and contains specific details relating to the current coverage of states located in Eastern Europe, Asia, Pacific and Antarctica. The geographical positions of countries described are illustrated by means of a series of accompanying reference maps. The information supplied for each country consists of a text, including a brief history of the development of topographic mapping, geodetic data, map scales and series as well as extracts of maps and index sheets illustrating the present status of map coverage within that country. There is currently no other work employing the approach adopted in assembling this "inventory". This work is a comprehensive and important reference and source book for information in the field of topographic mapping.
