Book Synopsis Images of Germany in American Literature by : Waldemar Zacharasiewicz
Download or read book Images of Germany in American Literature written by Waldemar Zacharasiewicz and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although German Americans number almost 43 million and are the largest ethnic group in the United States, scholars of American literature have paid little attention to this influential and ethnically diverse cultural group. In a work of unparalleled depth and range, Waldemar Zacharasiewicz explores the cultural and historical background of the varied images of Germany and Germans throughout the past two centuries. Using an interdisciplinary approach known as comparative imagology, which borrows from social psychology and cultural anthropology, Zacharasiewicz samples a broad spectrum of original sources, including literary works, letters, diaries, autobiographical accounts, travelogues, newspaper reports, films, and even cartoons and political caricatures. Starting with the notion of Germany as the ideal site for academic study and travel in the nineteenth century and concluding with the twentieth-century image of Germany as an aggressive country, this innovative work examines the ever-changing image of Germans and Germany in the writings of Louisa May Alcott, Samuel Clemens, Henry James, William James, George Santayana, W. E. B. Du Bois, John Dewey, H. L. Mencken, Katherine Anne Porter, Kay Boyle, Thomas Wolfe, Upton Sinclair, Gertrude Stein, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Pynchon, William Styron, Walker Percy, and John Hawkes, among others.

Book Synopsis Multiculturalism in the United States by : John D. Buenker
Download or read book Multiculturalism in the United States written by John D. Buenker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-03-30 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in ethnic studies and multiculturalism has grown considerably in the years since the 1992 publication of the first edition of this work. Co-editors Ratner and Buenker have revised and updated the first edition of Multiculturalism in the United States to reflect the changes, patterns, and shifts in immigration showing how American culture affects immigrants and is affected by them. Common topics that helped determine the degree and pace of acculturation for each ethnic group are addressed in each of the 17 essays, providing the reader with a comparative reference tool. Seven new ethnic groups are included: Arabs, Haitians, Vietnamese, Koreans, Filipinos, Asian Indians, and Dominicans. New essays on the Irish, Chinese, and Mexicans are provided as are revised and updated essays on the remaining groups from the first edition. The contribution to American culture by people of these diverse origins reflects differences in class, occupation, and religion. The authors explain the tensions and conflicts between American culture and the traditions of newly arrived immigrants. Changes over time that both of the cultures brought to America and of the culture that received them is also discussed. Essays on representative ethnic groups include African-Americans, American Indians, Arabs, Asian Indians, Chinese, Dominicans, Filipinos, Germans, Haitians, Irish, Italians, Jews, Koreans, Mexicans, Poles, Scandinavians, and the Vietnamese.

Book Synopsis Wisconsin's German Element by : John Henry A. Lacher
Download or read book Wisconsin's German Element written by John Henry A. Lacher and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1999 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. H. A. Lacher's treatise on the German element of Wisconsin, originally published by a division of the Steuben Society of America in 1925, is still the standard introduction to its subject. It has now been edited for republication by German-American authority Don Heinrich Tolzmann. The first section of the work focuses on Wisconsin's rich German religious establishment: Catholics, Lutherans, German Evangelical Synod, German Reformed, Evangelical Association, Liberals and Jews, and it gives the names and places of origin and settlement of pioneering clergymen and other immigrants in the various denominations. Section Two looks at representative German-Americans and their vocations in Wisconsin, with emphasis upon agriculture, art, education, temperance, business, music, cuisine, medicine, and the bar. One of the keys to Germans' assimilation in America was the ease with which they were able to transplant various social and cultural institutions in the building of a German-American identity in their adopted homeland. This is borne out in the third section of the book, which homes in upon Wisconsin German politics, the German press, sports, thrift, men of letters, German place names and patronymics, and the impact of World War I. Genealogists will find references to some 750 German surnames at the back of this volume, while persons seeking to do further research into Wisconsin German history or genealogy should consult the selective bibliography at the back of the book, which has been updated by the editor.

Book Synopsis The Reception of German Literature in U.S. German Texts, 1864-1918 by : John Hargrove Tatum
Download or read book The Reception of German Literature in U.S. German Texts, 1864-1918 written by John Hargrove Tatum and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1988 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explore the reception of German literature in the United States from 1864 to 1918, a period of great significance for both the U.S. and Germany in terms of sociopolitical developments that exerted their influence upon the production of literature. However, it is not intended to account for the entire scope of the reception of German belles lettres; rather, the book confines itself to exploring the use of those texts that were read in the classrooms of U.S. high schools and, above all, institutions of higher learning. An introductory chapter offers statistical surveys of textbooks published in the U.S., as such statistics are absolutely essential to ascertain both the availability and degree of popularity of certain texts that were exclusively intended for perusal in the classroom. The following chapters present texts dating from the late Middle Ages to the first decades of our century. Apart from establishing which texts were most frequently used, the chapters endeavor to evaluate the respective texts in terms of their intrinsic and extrinsic literary qualities.

Book Synopsis Distinguished German-Americans by : Charles R. Haller
Download or read book Distinguished German-Americans written by Charles R. Haller and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work brings together, in a condensed format, a broad selection of over 2,300 prominent Americans whose ancestors were of German-speaking origin. For the benefit of the reader, each of these distinguished citizens has been categorized according to his or her contributions and placed into thirteen user-friendly directories, namely: Artistic Talents; Sporting Personalities and Brewers; Clergy; Educators, Scholars and Historians; Engineers, Inventors, Bridge-Builders and Tinkerers; Entertainment World; High Finance and Big Business; Government; Medical Sciences; World of Music; Printing and Publishing World; Natural Sciences; and, Men and Women at War. A typical entry includes, when available, the full name, birth and death dates, and which generation of the family in America that individual represented. Oftentimes the entries will include the stage-name or the original spelling of the surname if the name had been changed in America. Each table is preceded by text which attempts to place each occupational category into an historic context. Selective profiles of representative individuals citing specific achievements in their respective fields are included as well. In the introduction, entitled "Broadly Speaking, Just Who Were the German-Americans," the author examines the data from the thirteen directories in great detail. For example, there are tables dividing the immigrants into areas of origin, and tables exploring dates of immigration. The introduction also attempts to help the reader bridge the linguistic barriers created when reverting American names back to the original German. To this end he has created seven basic rules of name recognition, and has also provided a table listing the twenty-five most common German names and their American English equivalents. The appendices include an abridged glossary of European localities, an every-name index, and three separate bibliographies. Also included is an abridged list of contemporary German-American organizations operating both here and abroad.
