Book excerpt: A new artist’s book, created by Gerhard Richter, that explores abstraction and chance in art and writing “The 100 Abstract Pictures shown here originated about five years ago, when I poured enamel paints on a fifty-by-fifty centimeter glass plate. The paints then flowed into one another without completely mixing. Thus they produced countless ephemeral abstract pictures, which I captured in photographs. These pictures are juxtaposed in the book with text formations that were generated at random.” —Gerhard Richter, 2023 With a career spanning more than sixty years, the renowned painter Gerhard Richter is one of the greatest artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Debuting alongside Richter's first exhibition at David Zwirner, featuring new abstract works created between 2016 and 2022, this book celebrates his continued dedication to experimentation and innovation. An artwork of its own, this intimate volume inspires both close looking and a beautiful interpretation of abstraction.

Book excerpt: Gerhard Richter is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest living artists. With a brush that deftly and romantically captures abstract details and blurred newspaper images alike, he has transformed our understanding of art in the age of photographic reproduction and mass-media imagery. 100 Pictures is a faithful reprint of the intimate, cloth-bound book Richter created in 1996 as a nonstandard anthology of his oeuvre. Following a short introduction to his early work, which features pictures long held in his studio, 100 Pictures presents Richter's output from an intensive period of work between 1995-96. Though this period mainly saw the production of abstract works, it also begat a cycle of eight small-format paintings of an intimate, private nature, which portrays his young wife Sabine as a Madonna-and-child. 100 Pictures is an extraordinary document of contemporary art, finally back in print.

Book excerpt: Located somewhere between Pop Art and Realism, Gerhard Richter's abstract works are the subject of this unique book that brings together 80 works from collections worldwide. Trained in the 1950s as a realistic painter, by the mid-1970s Gerhard Richter began to evolve into a more abstract artist. His large, colorful paintings from that time exposed the process of painting as much as its creative aims. Focusing solely on Richter's abstract work, this book features 80 works on canvas that represent the full range of the artist's experiments away from representational painting. It includes his early works, which called painting itself into question and incorporated personal documents and newspaper images. Also examined here are Richter's series of gray paintings from the 1970s--a reaffirmation of artistic purity; his "Inpainting" series, which made the application of paint and brushstrokes themselves the subject; his color chart paintings, which both neutralize and glorify painting's most emotionally charged element: color. Also included are his later works in which he applied paint with a brush, scraper, and palette knife. Taken as a whole, these brilliant works reveal an artist consistently in dialogue with his work, and with the overarching artistic trends of the time.

Book excerpt: Over the course of his acclaimed 60-year career, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) has employed both representation and abstraction as a means of reckoning with the legacy, collective memory, and national sensibility of post–WWII Germany, in both broad and very personal terms. This handsomely designed book spans the artist’s rich and varied oeuvre from the early 1960s to the present, including photo paintings, portraits, large-scale abstract series, and works on glass. Essays by leading experts on the artist illuminate Richter’s preoccupation with painting in relation to other modes of representation, and emphasize the ongoing importance of the medium’s formal and conceptual possibilities in contemporary art.

Book excerpt: Gerhard Richter (*1932 in Dresden) has always dealt with the landscape. No other motif has fascinated him as much or kept him so occupied over the years: black-and-white landscapes based on images from magazines and amateur photos; views of mountains and parks painted in thick impasto; softly hued, transparent, illusionist lake scenes. Ever since the subtle Corsica paintings of 1968/69, landscapes have become an established, distinct group of works within the artist's oeuvre. Richter captures reality in a painterly way, such that landscape and abstraction manifest not as opposites but as related concepts. Containing outstanding illustrations and insightful texts, this volume examines Richter's landscapes from the early sixties to the present. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-2638-2)

Book excerpt: Following the limited edition hardback November title published in 2013 by HENI Publishing, the paperback edition has been released in both English and German languages to the trade. November presents German artist Gerhard Richter s series of the same name comprised of 54 ink drawings so called due to their creation throughout the month of November in 2008. Richter assumed this method after accidentally dripping ink on to a sheet of highly absorbent paper and realising that two related images formed on the front and back. He then began to manipulate the ink in various ways changing its consistency and applying lacquer or pencil to add further detail. Reworking this method on 27 sheets of paper, he was able to create 54 images in total, presented here as facsimiles, so that both sides of each piece of paper can be viewed at the same time. These are labelled with the date that they were produced and arranged in order. The book also contains an overview of the series, featuring thumbnail

Book excerpt: The Richter Interviewscollects together a series of conversations between Hans Ulrich Obrist and Gerhard Richter over the course of more than two decades of discussion and collaboration. Subjects range from Richter's place within art history to artists' books, architecture, religion, unrealised projects and his advice for young artists. The collection also includes a previously unpublished interview focused on Richter's much-lauded window for Cologne Cathedral, unveiled in 2007. Obrist's vast knowledge and interrogating mind coupled with his longstanding friendship with Richter make him a unique interlocutor for an artist whose work spans more than 60 years and ranges from painting to photography, glass to printmaking, watercolours to books. Obrist deftly guides the reader through a dazzling array of topics and offers an invaluable historical perspective on Richter's place within the art world of the 20th and 21st centuries. Illustrations of discussed artworks by Richter feature throughout the texts for visual reference - making this an indispensable guide to the thinking and creative processes of one of the world's most admired artists.
