Pour venir à bout des difficultés de coiffage ou par souci esthétique et socioculturel, de nombreux styles capillaires sont adoptés par les personnes ayant les cheveux crépus : les styles naturels (afro, vanilles, dreadlocks, tresses sans rajout), les tresses avec rajouts, le tissage, le port de perruques, le lissage à chaud, le défrisage, la permanente bouclée (Curly). De plus, pour entretenir leur chevelure, les personnes de cette population utilisent fréquemment des produits cosmétiques spécifiquement formulés pour leur type capillaire (shampooings et après-shampooing surgraissants, produits défrisants, produits pour permanentes bouclées...) Cependant, la réalisation de ces styles capillaires et l’utilisation de certains produits cosmétiques peuvent entraîner ou aggraver les troubles capillaires observés sur le cuir chevelu et les cheveux crépus. Brûlures, fragilisation de la tige pilaire, dermatites de contact irritantes ou allergiques, urticaires, alopécies, sont autant d’effets indésirables que l’on peut relier à l’utilisation de certains produits cosmétiques capillaires.
