Book excerpt: In 1977 and 1978, Bechtel Power Corporation performed conceptual design studies of one 50-MW geothermal power plant for the Public Service Company of New Mexico, an electric utility company in New Mexico. The conceptual design studies were to compare various turbine heat cycles for the utilization of geothermal source from the liquid-dominated hydrothermal field at Valles Caldera ("Valley of the Boiler") in the Jemez Mountains, 80 miles north of Albuquerque and 19 miles west of Los Alamos in New Mexico. These conceptual designs compared single and double steam processes. In 1979, upon the completion of the conceptual design studies, Bechtel Power Corporation was awarded a contract by the Public Service Company of New Mexico for engineering, procurement, and construction managament sevices for the 50-MW geothermal power plant project identified as the Baca Geothermal Power Plant located at the site known as Baca Ranch. This project is cofunded under the U.S. Department of Energy demonstration plant program and is the first commercial-size geothermal power plant in the U.S. using a liquid-dominated hydrothermal source. In addition, in view of its low salinity, about 6000 ppm, this hydrothermal source is looked upon by the U.S. energy sector as another major geothermal-electric energy source comparable to the Geyser vapor-thermal field in Northern California.
