Book excerpt: A rapid test has been developed to observe the actual filtration performance of nonwoven geotextiles with site-specific soils. The test is a variation of the "Slurry Test" developed by Dr. James L. Sherard, and is performed by replacing the granular medium in Sherards' test with a geotextile. Several tests were performed with fine-grained soils and nonwoven geotextiles of different mass per unit area, thickness and apparent opening size (AOS). It was observed that the phenomena that occurred in the geotextile filtration test are similar to described by Sherard during his research. In successful tests, the initial outflow is turbid but clears within a short period of time and a "filter cake" forms at the geotextile-slurry interface. In unsuccessful tests, a large amount of soil passes through the geotextile and/or no "filter cake" forms.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the filtration performance of a geotextile filter necessitates accurate information about the size distribution of geotextile pore openings. The effectiveness of the bubble point test in determining the pore and constriction sizes of geotextiles was evaluated. The characteristic woven geotextile pore and nonwoven geotextile constriction sizes, O95, were determined for a variety of specimens and compared with both the manufacturers' reported AOS values, and with those determined from the two previously developed image-based procedures and theoretical equations. The results indicated that the O95 sizes of woven mono and multifilament geotextiles determined by image analyses compared well with the AOS values, whereas the same observations were not made for the bubble point-based O95 sizes. The O95 constriction sizes of various nonwoven geotextiles obtained by the bubble point test were not comparable to the manufacturers' reported AOS values, indicating the limitation of ASTM D 4751 in determining constriction sizes. A direct method, such as image analysis, may be a better approach for determining the pore sizes of woven geotextiles, whereas the bubble point method should be preferred to determine constriction sizes in a nonwoven geotextile. Recommendations are made in regard to improvements in the current ASTM standard on bubble point testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geosynthetics can, and have, played a pivotal role in providing the primary functions of filtration, drainage and erosion control. Within each category this book counterpoints the design, testing and performance of the various materials against one another. The facilitation of filtration by a number of different woven and non–woven geotextiles is discussed. Design is centred around a balance between open voids [for adequate permeability] and closed voids [for proper soil retention]. This balance is compromised by long term clogging or soil loss from either the upstream soil particles or by the nature of the permeating fluid. This is a major focal area of the book. One solution to excessive filter clogging is to open up the geotextile's voids and allow sediments and micro–organisms in the permeating fluid to pass through. The challenge then becomes the design and potential clogging of the drain. The drainage aspect of geosynthetics is the second focal area. Erosion control is closely related to both filtration and drainage. The tremendous design problems, and equally large repair problems on all types of facilities, are addressed. Highway slopes, earth dams, landfill covers and solid waste daily covers are a few common situations.

Book excerpt: Reliable subsurface drainage systems for groundwater table and salinity control are needed to maintain or enhance the productivity of irrigated lands and to contribute to the rural development of lowlands in the humid tropic. This publication presents guidelines to assess the need for envelopes and for the selection of appropriate materials (i.e. pipes and envelopes) for the proper and lasting performance of subsurface drainage systems. In addition, it also contains guidelines for adequate installation and maintenance of drainage materials as well as the required specifications and standards of such materials, which may be used in tender documents for implementation of subsurface drainage works. Practical guidelines for the implementation of laboratory and field investigations to evaluate the performance of drainage materials have also been included.--Publisher's description.

About 750 Authors - Academics, Researchers, Students, Practitioners, Contractors and Manufacturers – contributed to the peer-reviewed papers of this volume, which includes the Giroud lecture, the Bathurst lecture, the Rowe lecture, four keynote lectures and 296 technical papers. The content of these proceedings illustrates the sustainable use of geosynthetics in a variety of innovative as well as consolidated applications. After the sustainability implications in the correct use of geosynthetics, the ability to overcome the natural events effects, often related to the climate change, and to adequately afford the human activities (as the increase of pollution) forced to refer to a new keyword: Resiliency. The 12 ICG intends to become the base for the next step, hence the conference theme is 'Geosynthetics, Leading the Way to a Resilient Planet'. The conference topics, through general and parallel sessions, invited presentations and keynote lectures, address the most recent developments in geosynthetic engineering, and stimulate fruitful technical and scientific interaction among academicians, professionals, manufacturers, students. The 12 ICG proceedings contain a wealth of information that could be useful for researchers, practitioners and all those working in the broad, innovative and dynamic field of geosynthetics.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tested the filter performance of four different geotextiles. A flume apparatus was constructed and used to simulate a silt fence installation. The apparatus and procedures were based on a previous study performed by the Virginia Highway Transportation and Research Council. Water and sediment was filtered through a fabric sample and the ratio of the sediment concentration in the influent compared to the concentration in the effluent determined and expressed as a percent. Two physical properties of the fabrics were examined as predictors of fabric filter efficiency. The apparent opening size was not a reliable predictor of fabric performance for the samples tested. The flow rate through the fabric indicated that fabrics with a lower flow rate will probably exhibit higher filtration efficiencies, but an inadequate number of tests were performed for conclusive evidence. The effect of sediment particles larger than the U.S. Standard No. 30 sieve on fabric clogging and binding was briefly examined. These large particles did not contribute significantly to blinding. Keywords; Glacial deposits; Soil erosion; Soil filter efficiency; Theses. (EDC).
