Book excerpt: A beautiful volume that brings to light the forgotten Le Nain brothers, a trio of 17th-century French master painters who specialized in portraiture, religious subjects, and scenes of everyday peasant life In France in the 17th century, the brothers Antoine (c. 1598-1648), Louis (c. 1600/1605-1648), and Mathieu (1607-1677) Le Nain painted images of everyday life for which they became posthumously famous. They are celebrated for their depictions of middle-class leisure activities, and particularly for their representations of peasant families, who gaze out at the viewer. The uncompromising naturalism of these compositions, along with their oddly suspended action, imparts a sense of dignity to their subjects. Featuring more than sixty paintings highlighting the artists' full range of production, including altarpieces, private devotional paintings, portraits, and the poignant images of peasants for which the brothers are best known, this generously illustrated volume presents new research concerning the authorship, dating, and meaning of the works by well-known scholars in the field. Also groundbreaking are the results of a technical study of the paintings, which constitutes a major contribution to the scholarship on the Le Nain brothers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges de La Tour ranks with Vermeer and the Le Nain brothers among those seventeenth-century painters whose unmistakable talent is matched only by the aura of mystery that surrounds the artists themselves. Jacques Thuillier's groundbreaking monograph, first published in 1993, places La Tour's oeuvre in the specific context of the Lorraine region where he lived and worked, but also repositions La Tour alongside the greatest European masters. Available for the first time in paperback, this beautifully designed volume, complete with an illustrated catalogue raisonné and translations of key documentary sources, remains the essential reference work on this important and fascinating artist.
Book Synopsis Realism and Role-Play by : Marika Knowles
Download or read book Realism and Role-Play written by Marika Knowles and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the heroic nudes of the Renaissance and depictions of the tortured bodies of Christian saints, early seventeenth-century French artists turned their attention to their fellow humans, to nobles and beggars seen on the streets of Paris, to courtesans standing at their windows, to vendors advertising their wares, to peasants standing before their landlords. Fascinated by the intricate politics of the encounter between two human beings, artists such as Jacques Callot, Daniel Rabel, Abraham Bosse, Claude Vignon, Georges de la Tour, Jean de Saint-Igny, the Brothers Le Nain, Pierre Brébiette, Jean I Le Blond, and Charles David represented the human figure as a performer acting out a social role. The resulting figures were everyday types whose representations in series of prints, painted galleries, and illustrated books created a repertoire of such contemporary roles. Realism and Role-Play draws on literature, social history, and affect theory in order to understand the way that figuration performed social positions. "The book gathers together the most recent scholarship on Hartley's work, discussing such topics as the artist's working methods, his self-portraits, the influence of Cezanne on his work, and Hartley's attitudes toward Native Americans. A chronology of his life is included, and each painting is accompanied by a full catalogue entry." "This book also serves as the catalogue of an exhibition organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and traveling to the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
