Under consideration is Thomas Hooker's "Poor Doubting Christian Drawn unto Christ" on the redemption of Joan Drake and its influence on MacDonald's "Wingfold" trilogy; MacDonald's version of the "Wandering Jew"; MacDonald's interpretation of Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and Dante's "Divine Comedy"; and similarities and differences between the theological ideas of MacDonald, C. S. Lewis, Elizabeth Prentiss, and Shusaku Endo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading MacDonald scholar settles the longstanding debate about the author’s views on hell with an in-depth analysis of his thought on the afterlife. Throughout his extensive and influential writings on Christian theology, George MacDonald only hints at his perspectives on hell, atonement, and everlasting punishment. Nowhere does he clearly state a doctrinal position on the subject. As a result, a controversy has raged for more than a century about whether or not MacDonald was a universalist. Now MacDonald scholar and biographer Michael Phillips tackles the “great hell debate” head on in this authoritative book. With numerous quotes from MacDonald’s writings and his extensive knowledge of MacDonald’s work, Phillips blows the lid off the debate by illuminating the full scope of MacDonald’s afterlife vision. One of the most significant studies of MacDonald’s theological perspectives ever written, this is a must-read for all serious students of George MacDonald.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading George MacDonald scholar presents a fascinating introduction to the 19th century Scottish author’s views on Christianity, faith, and God. The Victorian author, poet, and theologian George MacDonald inspired some of the greatest writers of the early 20th century, including C.S. Lewis, who said MacDonald’s books were pivotal in leading him toward Christianity. While MacDonald’s beloved fiction—including classics like Robert Falconer and At the Back of the North Wind—remain popular, his sermons and nonfiction writings on faith are less well-known. Now MacDonald scholar and biographer Michael Phillips presents a comprehensive introduction to George MacDonald’s theological ideas. In George MacDonald’s Spiritual Vision, Phillips provides extensive, thematically arranged quotes from the author’s writings. This brief volume covers topics from the nature and character of God to salvation, justice and atonement.

This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his C.S Lewis's introduction to George MacDonald: An Anthology, he speaks highly of MacDonald's theology: "This collection, as I have said, was designed not to revive MacDonald's literary reputation but to spread his religious teaching. Hence most of my extracts are taken from the three volumes of Unspoken Sermons. My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another: and nearly all serious inquirers to whom I have introduced it acknowledge that it has given them great help-sometimes indispensable help toward the very acceptance of the Christian faith. ... I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself. Hence his Christ-like union of tenderness and severity. Nowhere else outside the New Testament have I found terror and comfort so intertwined. ... In making this collection I was discharging a debt of justice. I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master; indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him. But it has not seemed to me that those who have received my books kindly take even now sufficient notice of the affiliation. Honesty drives me to emphasize it." This collection brings together three of George MacDonald's writings: "Unspoken Sermons by George Macdonald Series i, ii, iii in One Volume" - expositions revealing his profound theology. "A Book of Strife in the Form of the Diary of an Old Soul" - a book of poems remarkable for their stirring portrayal of human emotions. And "The Hope of the Gospel" - MacDonald writes about the gospel and about what it means to be a Christian with great wisdom and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald (1824–1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical unease. In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the ‘gospel’ proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news; rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view, the church had become a vampire, sucking the blood of her children instead of offering them Eucharistic life. In contrast, like Christ, MacDonald offers us a child. Although at first sight a familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald’s theology ‘the child’ becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire’s kingdom and confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. John R. de Jong’s meticulously researched study of MacDonald’s work – especially his ‘realist’ and fantasy novels – in its Victorian context is of more than historical interest. In light of the growth of fundamentalist expressions of Christianity, we are encouraged to consider embracing MacDonald’s radical solution to religious vampirism: becoming children.

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen much controversy regarding a unified Christian doctrine of hell: Do we go to heaven or hell when we die? Or do we cease to exist? Are believers and unbelievers ultimately saved by grace in the end? By focusing on recent theological arguments, Four Views on Hell: Second Edition highlights why the church still needs to wrestle with the doctrine of hell. In the fair-minded and engaging Counterpoints format, four leading scholars introduce us to the current views on eternal judgment, with particular attention given to the new voices that have entered the debate. Contributors and views include: Denny Burk – representing a principle of Eternal Conscious Torment John Stackhouse – representing a principle of Annihilationism (Conditional Immortality) Robin Parry – representing a principle of Universalism (Ultimate Reconciliation) Jerry Walls – representing a principle of Purgatory Preston Sprinkle concludes the discussion by evaluating each view, noting significant points of exchange between the essayists. The interactive nature of the volume allows the reader to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of each view and come to an informed conclusion. BONUS CONTENT: Includes entire first edition of Four Views on Hell to help readers grasp the history of the discussion and how it has developed over the last twenty years.
