Book excerpt: "This beautifully illustrated catalogue explores how Georg Jensen silver has expanded the boundaries of modern style, changing the look of twentieth-century homes and spreading Scandinavian design around the world. Design for Everyday Living is the first scholarly treatment of Georg Jensen to approach the firm's output in an analytical way, situating it in the context of twentieth-century design history and focusing on the firm's unique evolution and global influence. This book is geared to a wide audience of interested nonspecialists and design historians rather than to a narrower readership of silver collectors. It is also innovative in that it focuses on the story of the firm rather than solely on the career of its founder. The essays are all original and include a contribution from Thomas Thulstrup, the leading expert on Georg Jensen silver. The book also benefits from a close collaboration with the Jensen firm, which has allowed us access to images and archival materials published here for the first time"--

Book excerpt: The preeminent luxury silver brand in the world, Georg Jensen is the essence of Danish design and craftsmanship. Founded in 1904, Georg Jensen has a deep heritage in high-end silversmithing that represents timeless design and enduring style. The eponymous founder was trained as an artist at the turn of the twentieth century, and his jewelry designs in the art nouveau style won immediate acclaim. Jensen was the first design company to reach out to outside designers to ensure the best designed products in their ever-expanding lines, which include sterling silver cutlery, jewelry, watches, and housewares. Arne Jacobsen, Henning Koppel, and Nanna Ditzel are just a few of the names synonymous with Danish Modern who designed their best products for Jensen. That tradition continues today with celebrated designers such as Jean Nouvel and Ilse Crawford. With beautiful historic photographs and drawings from Jensen’s extensive archive, which display the incredible craftsmanship and technical innovations of the highly skilled silversmiths, Georg Jensen is a sumptuous visual celebration of Danish design. Offering a lavish and in-depth look at some of the most stunning silver creations in history, this volume is for anyone interested in design and craftsmanship.

Book excerpt: This stunning book examines design exchanges between the United States and Scandinavia over nearly a century and explores the fascinating reasons why Scandinavian design has continued to resonate with Americans. Focusing on the extensive influence of Scandinavian design in the United States, this book shows how Nordic ideas about modern design and the objects themselves had an indelible impact on American culture and material life. It also considers America's influence on Scandinavian design, showing how cultural exchange is mutual by nature. In addition to familiar material like Danish furniture and Swedish glass, readers will learn about America's little-known "Viking Revival" style; the work of Howard Smith, an African-American artist who immigrated to Finland in the 1960s; and the myriad ways Scandinavian toys and household goods helped shape American child-rearing practices. The perfect addition to any Danish modern coffee table, this elegant book traces how Scandinavian design became an integral part of what is considered "American design." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five years during World War II, Denmark was occupied by Germany. While the Danish reaction to this period of its history has been extensively discussed in Danish-language publications, it has not until now received a thorough treatment in English. Set in the context of modern Danish foreign relations, and tracing the country’s responses to successive crises and wars in the region, Danish Reactions to German Occupation brings a full overview of the occupation to an English-speaking audience. Holbraad carefully dissects the motivations and ideologies driving conduct during the occupation, and his authoritative coverage of the preceding century provides a crucial link to understanding the forces behind Danish foreign policy divisions. Analysing the conduct of a traumatised and strategically exposed small state bordering on an aggressive great power, the book traces a development from reluctant cooperation to active resistance. In doing so, Holbraad surveys and examines the subsequent, and not yet quite finished, debate among Danish historians about this contested period, which takes place between those siding with the resistance and those more inclined to justify limited cooperation with the occupiers – and who sometimes even condone various acts of collaboration.
