Book Synopsis Histoire, Société et études Islamiques Au 21e Siècle by : Vincent Legrand
Download or read book Histoire, Société et études Islamiques Au 21e Siècle written by Vincent Legrand and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-08-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Lure of Authoritarianism by : Stephen J. King
Download or read book The Lure of Authoritarianism written by Stephen J. King and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works collected in The Lure of Authoritarianism consider the normative appeal of authoritarianism in light of the 2011 popular uprisings in the Middle East. Despite what seemed to be a popular revolution in favor of more democratic politics, there has instead been a slide back toward authoritarian regimes that merely gesture toward notions of democracy. In the chaos that followed the Arab Spring, societies were lured by the prospect of strong leaders with firm guiding hands. The shift toward normalizing these regimes seems sudden, but the works collected in this volume document a gradual shift toward support for authoritarianism over democracy that stretches back decades in North Africa. Contributors consider the ideological, socioeconomic, and security-based justifications of authoritarianism as well as the surprising and vigorous reestablishment of authoritarianism in these regions. With careful attention to local variations and differences in political strategies, the volume provides a nuanced and sweeping consideration of the changes in the Middle East in the past and what they mean for the future.
Book Synopsis The African Geopolitical ATLAS 2020 by : Claude Biao

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first edition of Stake experts' African Geopolitical ATLAS aims to provide decision-makers with a snapshot of the geopolitical changes taking place on the continent during the 2018-2019 study period. It is a collection 84 geographical and thematic maps on topics ranging from African countries' military spendings, to the available croplands, or surface water covering. It's a bilingual edition (French, English). The concept is that of a collection of 30 thematic maps and 54 country monographs divided into three parts. To produce this ATLAS, the editing team focused on the decision-making value of the mapped data, i.e. their capacity to provide the essential elements for an informed decision on the chosen themes. As such, it is a public policy-oriented publication, intended to provide useful benchmarks for decision-making. More than just maps, these are 84 outlooks of Africa in 2020.

Book Synopsis Le Dilemme arabe et les Dix Commandements US by : Omar Mazri
Download or read book Le Dilemme arabe et les Dix Commandements US written by Omar Mazri and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-02-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Tunisia's International Relations since the 'Arab Spring' by : Tasnim Abderrahim
Download or read book Tunisia's International Relations since the 'Arab Spring' written by Tasnim Abderrahim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When popular protests started in Tunisia in late 2010, few anticipated the implications these events would have for the entire Arab region. In the following years, this region witnessed deep changes, increased divisions, and even failing states. Meanwhile, Tunisia managed to assert itself as a new democracy. How did this small country manage its democratic transition within such a short period? And what implications has this had for its foreign policy and its role in international politics? This book assesses Tunisia’s transition ‘inside and out’ from four angles: Tunisian polity and politics which provide the framework for its foreign policy since the ‘Arab Spring’; bilateral relations before and after the ‘Arab Spring’; Tunisia’s activism in international organisations as well as their presence in Tunisia; and transnational issues in Tunisia. Drawing on a broad range of primary sources, including authors’ own interview material conducted with politicians and representatives of civil society and international NGOs involved in the transition process, the book shows that since 2011 Tunisia has not only developed fundamentally at the domestic level, but also at the level of external relations. New and old alliances, a broadening of relations, and new activism of civil society and of Tunisia in international organisations certify that Tunisia has the potential to play an increasingly important role regionally as well as internationally. Providing an encompassing picture of Tunisia’s changed role and successful transition from an autocracy to a democracy, the book allows students and scholars in the field to understand the ‘last country standing’ better, a country that both the scientific community and the political scene should not underestimate for the promises it holds.
Book Synopsis Servants Of The Devil: The Facilitators Of The Criminal And Terrorist Networks by : Bernard Touboul
Download or read book Servants Of The Devil: The Facilitators Of The Criminal And Terrorist Networks written by Bernard Touboul and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Cold War, liberal capitalism has spread worldwide without any significant ideological rivalry, characterized by the frenetic search for an ever-increasing return on capital and constantly-increasing profits, a generalized un-concern for the moral values of liberalism, and for social inequalities and human misery. The book, Servants of the Devil: The Facilitators of the Criminal and Terrorist Networks, shows that this evolution has been possible, thanks to legitimate actors equipped with the legal, financial, technical, and influential means to facilitate the legitimization of criminals and the justification of such a criminal economy — the 'Servants of the Devil' acting as the 'legitimate' facilitators of the criminal and terrorist economies. The book aims to alert security authorities, government officials, business, professional and financial leaders, and the media that criminal and terrorist networks have thoroughly penetrated the political, economic, and social structures of the contemporary world, and they could not operate without the extensive and willing cooperation of these facilitators.Recommendations are made in this book to alter the targets of law-enforcement forces and the justice system, by putting more emphasis on the facilitators by naming, shaming, and prosecuting them to seriously disable the criminals and terrorists. The legal structure needs to be altered, detailing procedures to be used by critical institutions, as well as the intelligence and analytic techniques to be developed to stay ahead of the criminals' own constantly altered techniques. The book provides a detailed account of the problem and how it is corrupting the Western society, enhancing the need for a new economic paradigm that displays a real and actual economic understanding of the world and of any individual country's economic activity, and shifting the ways of economic analysis to bring out the actual strength and role of criminal and terrorist activities in local, regional, and international governance from the shadows.
Book Synopsis Islam and Christianity by : Jean Jacques Waardenburg
Download or read book Islam and Christianity written by Jean Jacques Waardenburg and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of studying past and present relationships between Islam and Christianity as well as between Muslims and Christians of different persuasions has now become generally recognized. The present volume of scholarly studies focusses on changes which have occurred in these relationships during the last forty years. The papers examine new Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox views of Islam and a broad variety of views of Christianity held by Muslims from India, Iran, North Africa, and the Near East, including some "fundamentalist" authors in Egypt and Lebanon. The book contains a moving testimony from a Muslim intellectual in Sarajevo written during the siege of the city. Nearly all contributions were discussed at the Cret Berard (Switzerland) symposium in April 1995.
