No other book has been published that treats inverse spectral and inverse scattering results by using the so called Poisson summation formula and the related study of singularities. This book presents these in a closed and comprehensive form, and the exposition is based on a combination of different tools and results from dynamical systems, microlocal analysis, spectral and scattering theory. The content of the first edition is still relevant, however the new edition will include several new results established after 1992; new text will comprise about a third of the content of the new edition. The main chapters in the first edition in combination with the new chapters will provide a better and more comprehensive presentation of importance for the applications inverse results. These results are obtained by modern mathematical techniques which will be presented together in order to give the readers the opportunity to completely understand them. Moreover, some basic generic properties established by the authors after the publication of the first edition establishing the wide range of applicability of the Poison relation will be presented for first time in the new edition of the book.

Book excerpt: The behaviour of reflecting rays plays an essential role in many problems of mathematical physics. This book studies different geometric properties of reflecting rays for manifolds with smooth boundary and their applications to different inverse spectral and scattering problems. This is a developing area in which the authors have made important contributions. Results concerning the particular problems studied and which arise in several important domains of modern physics are presented. Some chapters concerning the generic properties of reflecting rays can be used for courses for graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Spectral Geometry, held July 19-23, 2010, at Dartmouth College, Dartmouth, New Hampshire. Eigenvalue problems involving the Laplace operator on manifolds have proven to be a consistently fertile area of geometric analysis with deep connections to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. Key questions include the measures to which eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a Riemannian manifold condense in the limit of large eigenvalue, and the extent to which the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a manifold encode its geometry. In this volume, research and expository articles, including those of the plenary speakers Peter Sarnak and Victor Guillemin, address the flurry of recent progress in such areas as quantum unique ergodicity, isospectrality, semiclassical measures, the geometry of nodal lines of eigenfunctions, methods of numerical computation, and spectra of quantum graphs. This volume also contains mini-courses on spectral theory for hyperbolic surfaces, semiclassical analysis, and orbifold spectral geometry that prepared the participants, especially graduate students and young researchers, for conference lectures.

Book excerpt: The prime goal of this monograph, which comprises a total of five volumes, is to derive sharp spectral asymptotics for broad classes of partial differential operators using techniques from semiclassical microlocal analysis, in particular, propagation of singularities, and to subsequently use the variational estimates in “small” domains to consider domains with singularities of different kinds. In turn, the general theory (results and methods developed) is applied to the Magnetic Schrödinger operator, miscellaneous problems, and multiparticle quantum theory. In this volume the general microlocal semiclassical approach is developed, and microlocal and local semiclassical spectral asymptotics are derived.

In this volume the local spectral asymptotics of Volume I in the regular part of the domain are combined with variational estimates in the vicinity of singularities, and global asymptotics are derived in the general form. They are then applied to multiple cases and asymptotics with respect to a spectral parameter. Finally, cases in which only general methods but not the results can be applied (non-standard asymptotics) are studied.

Book excerpt: Designed as an introduction to harmonic analysis and group representations, this book examines concepts, ideas, results, and techniques related to symmetry groups and Laplacians. Its exposition is based largely on examples and applications of general theory, covering a wide range of topics rather than delving deeply into any particular area. Author David Gurarie, a Professor of Mathematics at Case Western Reserve University, focuses on discrete or continuous geometrical objects and structures, such as regular graphs, lattices, and symmetric Riemannian manifolds. Starting with the basics of representation theory, Professor Gurarie discusses commutative harmonic analysis, representations of compact and finite groups, Lie groups, and the Heisenberg group and semidirect products. Among numerous applications included are integrable hamiltonian systems, geodesic flows on symmetric spaces, and the spectral theory of the Hydrogen atom (Schrodinger operator with Coulomb potential) explicated by its Runge-Lenz symmetry. Three helpful appendixes include supplemental information, and the text concludes with references, a list of frequently used notations, and an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: most polynomial growth on every half-space Re (z) ::::: c. Moreover, Op(t) depends holomorphically on t for Re t > O. General references for much of the material on the derivation of spectral functions, asymptotic expansions and analytic properties of spectral functions are [A-P-S] and [Sh], especially Chapter 2. To study the spectral functions and their relation to the geometry and topology of X, one could, for example, take the natural associated parabolic problem as a starting point. That is, consider the 'heat equation': (%t + p) u(x, t) = 0 { u(x,O) = Uo(x), tP which is solved by means of the (heat) semi group V(t) = e- ; namely, u(·, t) = V(t)uoU· Assuming that V(t) is of trace class (which is guaranteed, for instance, if P has a positive principal symbol), it has a Schwartz kernel K E COO(X x X x Rt,E* ®E), locally given by 00 K(x,y; t) = L>-IAk(~k ® 'Pk)(X,y), k=O for a complete set of orthonormal eigensections 'Pk E COO(E). Taking the trace, we then obtain: 00 tA Op(t) = trace(V(t)) = 2::>- k. k=O Now, using, e. g. , the Dunford calculus formula (where C is a suitable curve around a(P)) as a starting point and the standard for malism of pseudodifferential operators, one easily derives asymptotic expansions for the spectral functions, in this case for Op.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse boundary problems are a rapidly developing area of applied mathematics with applications throughout physics and the engineering sciences. However, the mathematical theory of inverse problems remains incomplete and needs further development to aid in the solution of many important practical problems. Inverse Boundary Spectral Problems develop a rigorous theory for solving several types of inverse problems exactly. In it, the authors consider the following: "Can the unknown coefficients of an elliptic partial differential equation be determined from the eigenvalues and the boundary values of the eigenfunctions?" Along with this problem, many inverse problems for heat and wave equations are solved. The authors approach inverse problems in a coordinate invariant way, that is, by applying ideas drawn from differential geometry. To solve them, they apply methods of Riemannian geometry, modern control theory, and the theory of localized wave packets, also known as Gaussian beams. The treatment includes the relevant background of each of these areas. Although the theory of inverse boundary spectral problems has been in development for at least 10 years, until now the literature has been scattered throughout various journals. This self-contained monograph summarizes the relevant concepts and the techniques useful for dealing with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral geometry runs through much of contemporary mathematics, drawing on and stimulating developments in such diverse areas as Lie algebras, graph theory, group representation theory, and Riemannian geometry. The aim is to relate the spectrum of the Laplace operator or its graph-theoretic analogue, the adjacency matrix, to underlying geometric and topological data. This volume brings together papers presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Spectral Geometry, held in July 1993 at the University of Washington in Seattle. With contributions from some of the top experts in the field, this book presents an excellent overview of current developments in spectral geometry.

Book excerpt: Here is a clearly written introduction to three central areas of inverse problems: inverse problems in electromagnetic scattering theory, inverse spectral theory, and inverse problems in quantum scattering theory. Inverse problems, one of the most attractive parts of applied mathematics, attempt to obtain information about structures by nondestructive measurements. Based on a series of lectures presented by three of the authors, all experts in the field, the book provides a quick and easy way for readers to become familiar with the area through a survey of recent developments in inverse spectral and inverse scattering problems.

Book excerpt: In recent years, increasingly complex methods have been brought into play in the treatment of geometric and topological problems for partial differential operators on manifolds. This collection of papers, resulting from a Workshop on Spectral Geometry of Manifolds with Boundary and Decomposition of Manifolds, provides a broad picture of these methods with new results. Subjects in the book range from spectral flow calculations and cut-and-paste considerations, via pseudodifferential methods, asymptotic expansions and variational arguments, to singular manifold theories and $K$-theoretic cohomological strategies. They lead to results on determinants, heat kernels, general trace, index and higher signature formulas, low-dimensional topological invariants, as well as on the structure of the manifolds and operators involved. Moreover, the approaches and results are placed in a physics context by two reviews on the applications in quantum field theory, respectively quantum gravity. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in spectral problems in geometry.
