Book excerpt: With the advances in image guided surgery for cancer treatment, the role of image segmentation and registration has become very critical. The central engine of any image guided surgery product is its ability to quantify the organ or segment the organ whether it is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), X-ray, PET, SPECT, Ultrasound, and Molecular imaging modality. Sophisticated segmentation algorithms can help the physicians delineate better the anatomical structures present in the input images, enhance the accuracy of medical diagnosis and facilitate the best treatment planning system designs. The focus of this book in towards the state of the art techniques in the area of image segmentation and registration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image segmentation plays an important role in medical imaging, pattern recognition, computer vision and many other applications. It is a process of segmenting objects from an image which is used for image analysis. If the geometric shape of the desired object is known, then incorporating this information in the image segmentation algorithm can improve the results. A non-trivial issue is to determine how to model objects from a precise Euclidean space in an imprecise but implementable discrete array of pixels. One of the big challenges in digital geometry is to develop the correct definition of the digital representation of Euclidean objects, and then give algorithms based on these definitions. One of the most fundamental and important digital objects is the digital line segment as the definition of many different digital objects depends on the definition of digital line segments (such as digital convex objects). The majority of digital line segments considered in previous research are such that the intersection of two segments may be disconnected. This is a major drawback as Euclidean line segments do not behave in this manner. It is not feasible to have digital line segments intersect in at most one point, and thus we are interested in digital segment systems such that every pair of segments has a connected intersection. A system of digital line segments is called a consistent digital line segments system (CDS) if it satisfies this connected intersection property as well as some other properties satisfied by Euclidean line segments in continuous space. Two previous results on CDSes have provided constructions with optimal Hausdorff distance in two dimensions but left open the problem of characterizing two-dimensional CDSes. Unfortunately, there is very little known about CDSes in higher dimensions. Several new results on CDSes are presented in this thesis. We answer the most important remaining open question by giving the desired characterization in two dimensions. We also take the first significant steps towards obtaining a CDS with optimal Hausdorff distance for d-dimensional line segments coming from two different "slope types" for any fixed d ≥ 3. We then give the first non-trivial framework for computing CDSes (for all segments) in d-dimensions. Finally, we show that if we want to relax some of those Euclidean properties, then systems of digital segments with O(1) Hausdorff distance can be obtained. The image segmentation problem has a lot of practical applications, so it is important to have algorithms which are very fast in practice. Previous researchers gave efficient algorithms for solving rectilinear convex object which is an object such that the intersection of the object with any horizontal line or any vertical line is always connected. We investigate which geometric objects have image segmentation algorithms that can be solved via reduction to maximum flow, which is very fast in practice. We give a maximum flow-based algorithm that can partition the image into foreground and background such that the foreground can be decomposed into multiple rectilinear convex objects.

Book excerpt: Signal/image processing and reconstruction based on mathematical modeling and computational techniques have been well developed and still attract much attention due to their broad applications. It becomes challenging to build mathematical models if the given data lacks some certainties. Prior information, including geometric priors, high frequency priors, spatially variant intensity variations and image regularities, assists to establish mathematical models by providing a more accurate description of the underlying signal/image. We have been exploring applications of the extracted prior information in two directions: integrating prior information into the image denoising explained in nonlocal means (NL-means) denoising framework; enhancing the compressive sensing signal/image reconstruction with the guidance of prior information. The first topic is geometric information based image denoising, where we develop a segmentation boosted image denoising scheme, balancing the removal of excessive noise and preservation of fine features. By virtue of segmentation algorithms and more general geometry extraction schemes, we are able to obtain the phase or geometric prior information. Based on the NL-means method, we introduce a mutual position function to ensure that averaging is only taken over pixels in the same image phase. To further improve the performance, we provide the respective selection scheme for the convolution kernel and the weight function. To address the unreliable segmentation due to the presence of excessive noise, the phase prior is relaxed to a more general geometric prior. The second topic is prior information guided compressive sensing signal/image reconstruction. Concerning the 1D signal reconstruction, we extract high frequency subbands as prior to boost the subsequent reconstruction. In 2D image reconstruction realm, we propose a novel two-stage intensity variation prior guided image reconstruction method using pixel-to-pixel varying weights associated to the total variation. By incorporating high order image regularity prior, we develop one total generalized variation (TGV) based image reconstruction model. Unlike the traditional wavelet which is only able to detect locations of singularities, shearlet transform can efficiently provide more geometric information of singularities in images, e.g. direction. Therefore we adopt the shearlet transform to boost the sparsity in image reconstruction algorithms. In addition, our work in signal/image denoising and reconstruction can be easily generalized to deal with other kinds of noise or measurements.

Book excerpt: As one of the most important tasks in biomedical imaging, image segmentation provides the foundation for quantitative reasoning and diagnostic techniques. A large variety of different imaging techniques, each with its own physical principle and characteristics (e.g., noise modeling), often requires modality-specific algorithmic treatment. In recent years, substantial progress has been made to biomedical image segmentation. Biomedical image segmentation is characterized by several specific factors. This book presents an overview of the advanced segmentation algorithms and their applications.
