Book excerpt: Visionary, inspired, and original, contemporary Latin American artists draw from influences near and far. This colorful survey, which features 178 carefully selected works, celebrates some of the most exciting modern Latin American artworks to date, and also shows North American and European works that offered inspiration to these artists. Included are works by such masters as Alexander Calder and Joaquin Torres-Garcia, and by younger artists such as Carmelo Arden Quin, Juan Bay, and Alberto Biasi. The book covers New Realist and geometric abstract art of the 1940s and 1950s; optical and kinetic art from the 1950s and 1970s; and contemporary works from the 1970s to the present day, including abstract art, architecture projects, and art that incorporates new technologies.

Book Synopsis A History of Non-Euclidean Geometry by : Boris A. Rosenfeld
Download or read book A History of Non-Euclidean Geometry written by Boris A. Rosenfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian edition of this book appeared in 1976 on the hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the historic day of February 23, 1826, when LobaeevskiI delivered his famous lecture on his discovery of non-Euclidean geometry. The importance of the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry goes far beyond the limits of geometry itself. It is safe to say that it was a turning point in the history of all mathematics. The scientific revolution of the seventeenth century marked the transition from "mathematics of constant magnitudes" to "mathematics of variable magnitudes. " During the seventies of the last century there occurred another scientific revolution. By that time mathematicians had become familiar with the ideas of non-Euclidean geometry and the algebraic ideas of group and field (all of which appeared at about the same time), and the (later) ideas of set theory. This gave rise to many geometries in addition to the Euclidean geometry previously regarded as the only conceivable possibility, to the arithmetics and algebras of many groups and fields in addition to the arith metic and algebra of real and complex numbers, and, finally, to new mathe matical systems, i. e. , sets furnished with various structures having no classical analogues. Thus in the 1870's there began a new mathematical era usually called, until the middle of the twentieth century, the era of modern mathe matics.

Book excerpt: The History of Mathematics is a six-volume set that examines the development of the science through discovery, innovation, collaboration, and experimentation. Designed to complement mathematics curricula, each volume covers a significant development in recent mathematical history as well as the subject's origins. The books represent a fascinating overview of the contributions that mathematical research has made to the physical world. Beyond Geometry examines topology, a major branch of mathematics concerned with the presentation of spatial properties under continuous deformations, such as stretching, from its inception in the early 19th century to today. Throughout history, Euclidean geometry was the accepted language of mathematics, but as mathematicians began to see its limitations, new theorems were tested that evolved into this new branch of mathematics. The book gives a straightforward overview of the rapid advancement of topology and explains such subsets of set-theoretic topology as dimension theory. It also includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Scott Williams, a distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Buffalo, who discusses the contributions and goals of this innovative field of mathematics. The volume includes information on dimension history of topology the Hausdorff dimension limitations of geometry the Moore method set theory the standard axioms topological spaces The book contains 30 color photographs and four-color line illustrations, sidebars, a chronology, a glossary, a detailed list of print and Internet resources, and an index. The History of Mathematics is essential for high school students, teachers, and general readers who wish to understand the contributions of the major branches of mathematics. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible book for beginners uses intuitive geometric concepts to create abstract algebraic theory with a special emphasis on geometric characterizations. The book applies known results to describe various geometries and their invariants, and presents problems concerned with linear algebra, such as in real and complex analysis, differential equations, differentiable manifolds, differential geometry, Markov chains and transformation groups. The clear and inductive approach makes this book unique among existing books on linear algebra both in presentation and in content.
