Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the conference Geometry & Topology Down Under, held July 11-22, 2011, at the University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia, in honour of Hyam Rubinstein. The main topic of the book is low-dimensional geometry and topology. It includes both survey articles based on courses presented at the conferences and research articles devoted to important questions in low-dimensional geometry. Together, these contributions show how methods from different fields of mathematics contribute to the study of 3-manifolds and Gromov hyperbolic groups. It also contains a list of favorite problems by Hyam Rubinstein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groups arise naturally as symmetries of geometric objects, and so groups can be used to understand geometry and topology. Conversely, one can study abstract groups by using geometric techniques and ultimately by treating groups themselves as geometric objects. This book explores these connections between group theory and geometry, introducing some of the main ideas of transformation groups, algebraic topology, and geometric group theory. The first half of the book introduces basic notions of group theory and studies symmetry groups in various geometries, including Euclidean, projective, and hyperbolic. The classification of Euclidean isometries leads to results on regular polyhedra and polytopes; the study of symmetry groups using matrices leads to Lie groups and Lie algebras. The second half of the book explores ideas from algebraic topology and geometric group theory. The fundamental group appears as yet another group associated to a geometric object and turns out to be a symmetry group using covering spaces and deck transformations. In the other direction, Cayley graphs, planar models, and fundamental domains appear as geometric objects associated to groups. The final chapter discusses groups themselves as geometric objects, including a gentle introduction to Gromov's theorem on polynomial growth and Grigorchuk's example of intermediate growth. The book is accessible to undergraduate students (and anyone else) with a background in calculus, linear algebra, and basic real analysis, including topological notions of convergence and connectedness. This book is a result of the MASS course in algebra at Penn State University in the fall semester of 2009.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winding number is one of the most basic invariants in topology. It measures the number of times a moving point P goes around a fixed point Q, provided that P travels on a path that never goes through Q and that the final position of P is the same as its starting position. This simple idea has far-reaching applications. The reader of this book will learn how the winding number can help us show that every polynomial equation has a root (the fundamental theorem of algebra),guarantee a fair division of three objects in space by a single planar cut (the ham sandwich theorem),explain why every simple closed curve has an inside and an outside (the Jordan curve theorem),relate calculus to curvature and the singularities of vector fields (the Hopf index theorem),allow one to subtract infinity from infinity and get a finite answer (Toeplitz operators),generalize to give a fundamental and beautiful insight into the topology of matrix groups (the Bott periodicity theorem). All these subjects and more are developed starting only from mathematics that is common in final-year undergraduate courses.

Book excerpt: The influence of Solomon Lefschetz (1884-1972) in geometry and topology 40 years after his death has been very profound. Lefschetz's influence in Mexican mathematics has been even greater. In this volume, celebrating 50 years of mathematics at Cinvestav-México, many of the fields of geometry and topology are represented by some of the leaders of their respective fields. This volume opens with Michael Atiyah reminiscing about his encounters with Lefschetz and México. Topics covered in this volume include symplectic flexibility, Chern-Simons theory and the theory of classical theta functions, toric topology, the Beilinson conjecture for finite-dimensional associative algebras, partial monoids and Dold-Thom functors, the weak b-principle, orbit configuration spaces, equivariant extensions of differential forms for noncompact Lie groups, dynamical systems and categories, and the Nahm pole boundary condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrinsic geometric flows are characterized by a submanifold evolving in an ambient space with velocity determined by its extrinsic curvature. The goal of this book is to give an extensive introduction to a few of the most prominent extrinsic flows, namely, the curve shortening flow, the mean curvature flow, the Gauß curvature flow, the inverse-mean curvature flow, and fully nonlinear flows of mean curvature and inverse-mean curvature type. The authors highlight techniques and behaviors that frequently arise in the study of these (and other) flows. To illustrate the broad applicability of the techniques developed, they also consider general classes of fully nonlinear curvature flows. The book is written at the level of a graduate student who has had a basic course in differential geometry and has some familiarity with partial differential equations. It is intended also to be useful as a reference for specialists. In general, the authors provide detailed proofs, although for some more specialized results they may only present the main ideas; in such cases, they provide references for complete proofs. A brief survey of additional topics, with extensive references, can be found in the notes and commentary at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the conference Automorphic Forms and Related Geometry: Assessing the Legacy of I.I. Piatetski-Shapiro, held from April 23-27, 2012, at Yale University, New Haven, CT. Ilya I. Piatetski-Shapiro, who passed away on 21 February 2009, was a leading figure in the theory of automorphic forms. The conference attempted both to summarize and consolidate the progress that was made during Piatetski-Shapiro's lifetime by him and a substantial group of his co-workers, and to promote future work by identifying fruitful directions of further investigation. It was organized around several themes that reflected Piatetski-Shapiro's main foci of work and that have promise for future development: functoriality and converse theorems; local and global -functions and their periods; -adic -functions and arithmetic geometry; complex geometry; and analytic number theory. In each area, there were talks to review the current state of affairs with special attention to Piatetski-Shapiro's contributions, and other talks to report on current work and to outline promising avenues for continued progress. The contents of this volume reflect most of the talks that were presented at the conference as well as a few additional contributions. They all represent various aspects of the legacy of Piatetski-Shapiro.

Book excerpt: This book offers an alternative proof of the Bestvina?Feighn combination theorem for trees of hyperbolic spaces and describes uniform quasigeodesics in such spaces. As one of the applications of their description of uniform quasigeodesics, the authors prove the existence of Cannon?Thurston maps for inclusion maps of total spaces of subtrees of hyperbolic spaces and of relatively hyperbolic spaces. They also analyze the structure of Cannon?Thurston laminations in this setting. Furthermore, some group-theoretic applications of these results are discussed. This book also contains background material on coarse geometry and geometric group theory.

The authors are mathematicians who were strongly influenced by Thurston's publications and ideas. The subjects discussed include, among others, knot theory, the topology of 3-manifolds, circle packings, complex projective structures, hyperbolic geometry, Kleinian groups, foliations, mapping class groups, Teichmüller theory, anti-de Sitter geometry, and co-Minkowski geometry. The book is addressed to researchers and students who want to learn about Thurston’s wide-ranging mathematical ideas and their impact. At the same time, it is a tribute to Thurston, one of the greatest geometers of all time, whose work extended over many fields in mathematics and who had a unique way of perceiving forms and patterns, and of communicating and writing mathematics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Harmonic Analysis of Frames, Wavelets, and Tilings, held April 13-14, 2013, in Boulder, Colorado. Frames were first introduced by Duffin and Schaeffer in 1952 in the context of nonharmonic Fourier series but have enjoyed widespread interest in recent years, particularly as a unifying concept. Indeed, mathematicians with backgrounds as diverse as classical and modern harmonic analysis, Banach space theory, operator algebras, and complex analysis have recently worked in frame theory. Frame theory appears in the context of wavelets, spectra and tilings, sampling theory, and more. The papers in this volume touch on a wide variety of topics, including: convex geometry, direct integral decompositions, Beurling density, operator-valued measures, and splines. These varied topics arise naturally in the study of frames in finite and infinite dimensions. In nearly all of the papers, techniques from operator theory serve as crucial tools to solving problems in frame theory. This volume will be of interest not only to researchers in frame theory but also to those in approximation theory, representation theory, functional analysis, and harmonic analysis.

Book excerpt: According to Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855), mathematics is the queen of the sciences—and number theory is the queen of mathematics. Numbers (integers, algebraic integers, transcendental numbers, p-adic numbers) and symmetries are investigated in the nine refereed papers of this MDPI issue. This book shows how symmetry pervades number theory. In particular, it highlights connections between symmetry and number theory, quantum computing and elementary particles (thanks to 3-manifolds), and other branches of mathematics (such as probability spaces) and revisits standard subjects (such as the Sieve procedure, primality tests, and Pascal’s triangle). The book should be of interest to all mathematicians, and physicists.
