Book Synopsis Laminations and Foliations in Dynamics, Geometry and Topology by : Mikhail Lyubich
Download or read book Laminations and Foliations in Dynamics, Geometry and Topology written by Mikhail Lyubich and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on a conference held at SUNY, Stony Brook (NY). The concepts of laminations and foliations appear in a diverse number of fields, such as topology, geometry, analytic differential equations, holomorphic dynamics, and renormalization theory. Although these areas have developed deep relations, each has developed distinct research fields with little interaction among practitioners. The conference brought together the diverse points of view of researchers from different areas. This book includes surveys and research papers reflecting the broad spectrum of themes presented at the event. Of particular interest are the articles by F. Bonahon, "Geodesic Laminations on Surfaces", and D. Gabai, "Three Lectures on Foliations and Laminations on 3-manifolds", which are based on minicourses that took place during the conference.
Book Synopsis The Geometry and Topology of Coxeter Groups. (LMS-32) by : Michael Davis
Download or read book The Geometry and Topology of Coxeter Groups. (LMS-32) written by Michael Davis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geometry and Topology of Coxeter Groups is a comprehensive and authoritative treatment of Coxeter groups from the viewpoint of geometric group theory. Groups generated by reflections are ubiquitous in mathematics, and there are classical examples of reflection groups in spherical, Euclidean, and hyperbolic geometry. Any Coxeter group can be realized as a group generated by reflection on a certain contractible cell complex, and this complex is the principal subject of this book. The book explains a theorem of Moussong that demonstrates that a polyhedral metric on this cell complex is nonpositively curved, meaning that Coxeter groups are "CAT(0) groups." The book describes the reflection group trick, one of the most potent sources of examples of aspherical manifolds. And the book discusses many important topics in geometric group theory and topology, including Hopf's theory of ends; contractible manifolds and homology spheres; the Poincaré Conjecture; and Gromov's theory of CAT(0) spaces and groups. Finally, the book examines connections between Coxeter groups and some of topology's most famous open problems concerning aspherical manifolds, such as the Euler Characteristic Conjecture and the Borel and Singer conjectures.

Book Synopsis Topology and Geometric Group Theory by : Michael W. Davis
Download or read book Topology and Geometric Group Theory written by Michael W. Davis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents articles at the interface of two active areas of research: classical topology and the relatively new field of geometric group theory. It includes two long survey articles, one on proofs of the Farrell–Jones conjectures, and the other on ends of spaces and groups. In 2010–2011, Ohio State University (OSU) hosted a special year in topology and geometric group theory. Over the course of the year, there were seminars, workshops, short weekend conferences, and a major conference out of which this book resulted. Four other research articles complement these surveys, making this book ideal for graduate students and established mathematicians interested in entering this area of research.

Book Synopsis Current Trends in Transformation Groups by : Anthony Bak
Download or read book Current Trends in Transformation Groups written by Anthony Bak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of some of the most active topics in the theory of transformation groups over the past decades and stresses advances obtained in the last dozen years. The emphasis is on actions of Lie groups on manifolds and CW complexes. Manifolds and actions of Lie groups on them are studied in the linear, semialgebraic, definable, analytic, smooth, and topological categories. Equivalent vector bundles play an important role. The work is divided into fifteen articles and will be of interest to anyone researching or studying transformations groups. The references make it easy to find details and original accounts of the topics surveyed, including tools and theories used in these accounts.

Book Synopsis Groupoids in Analysis, Geometry, and Physics by : Geometry AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Groupoids in Analysis
Download or read book Groupoids in Analysis, Geometry, and Physics written by Geometry AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Groupoids in Analysis and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groupoids often occur when there is symmetry of a nature not expressible in terms of groups. Other uses of groupoids can involve something of a dynamical nature. Indeed, some of the main examples come from group actions. It should also be noted that in many situations where groupoids have been used, the main emphasis has not been on symmetry or dynamics issues. For example, a foliation is an equivalence relation and has another groupoid associated with it, called the holonomy groupoid. While the implicit symmetry and dynamics are relevant, the groupoid records mostly the structure of the space of leaves and the holonomy.More generally, the use of groupoids is very much related to various notions of orbit equivalence. The point of view that groupoids describe 'singular spaces' can be found in the work of A. Grothendieck and is prevalent in the non-commutative geometry of A. Connes. This book presents the proceedings from the Joint Summer Research Conference on 'Groupoids in Analysis, Geometry, and Physics' held in Boulder, CO. The book begins with an introduction to ways in which groupoids allow a more comprehensive view of symmetry than is seen via groups. Topics range from foliations, pseudo-differential operators, $KK$-theory, amenability, Fell bundles, and index theory to quantization of Poisson manifolds. Readers will find examples of important tools for working with groupoids. This book is geared to students and researchers. It is intended to improve their understanding of groupoids and to encourage them to look further while learning about the tools used.
