Book excerpt: Modern differential geometric techniques are used to unify the physical asymptotics underlying mechanics, wave theory and statistical mechanics. The approach gives new insights into the structure of physical theories and is suited to the needs of modern large-scale computer simulation and symbol manipulation systems. A coordinate-free formulation of non-singular perturbation theory is given, from which a new Hamiltonian perturbation structure is derived and related to the unperturbed structure. The theory of perturbations in the presence of symmetry is developed, and the method of averaging is related to reduction by a circle group action. The pseudo-forces and magnetic Poisson bracket terms due to reduction are given a natural asymptotic interpretation. Similar terms due to changing reference frames are related to the method of variation of parameters, which is also given a Hamiltonian formulation. These methods are used to answer a question about nearly periodic systems. The answer leads to a new secular perturbation theory that contains no ad hoc elements. Eikonal wave theory is given a Hamiltonian formulation that generalizes Whitham's Lagrangian approach. The evolution of wave action density on ray phase space is given a Hamiltonian structure using a Lie-Poisson bracket. The relationship between dissipative and Hamiltonian systems is discussed. A new type of attractor is defined which attracts both forward and backward in time and is shown to occur in infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with dissipative behavior. The theory of Smale horseshoes is applied to gyromotion in the neighborhood of a magnetic field reversal and the phenomenon of reinsertion in area-preserving horseshoes is introduced. The central limit theorem is proved by renormalization group techniques. A natural symplectic structure for thermodynamics is shown to arise asymptotically from the maximum entropy formalism.

Book excerpt: This book which focusses on mechanics, waves and statistics, describes recent developments in the application of differential geometry, particularly symplectic geometry, to the foundations of broad areas of physics. Throughout the book, intuitive descriptions and diagrams are used to elucidate the mathematical theory. It develops a coordinate-free framework for perturbation theory and uses this to show how underlying symplectic structures arise from physical asymptotes. It describes a remarkable parity between classical mechanics which arises asymptotically from quantum mechanics and classical thermodynamics which arises asymptotically from statistical mechanics. Included here is a section with one hundred unanswered questions for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Plasma Physics is the standard text for an introductory lecture course on plasma physics. The text’s six sections lead readers systematically and comprehensively through the fundamentals of modern plasma physics. Sections on single-particle motion, plasmas as fluids, and collisional processes in plasmas lay the groundwork for a thorough understanding of the subject. The authors take care to place the material in its historical context for a rich understanding of the ideas presented. They also emphasize the importance of medical imaging in radiotherapy, providing a logical link to more advanced works in the area. The text includes problems, tables, and illustrations as well as a thorough index and a complete list of references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as an introduction to plasma physics at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates or beginning postgraduate students in physics, applied mathematics or astrophysics. The main prerequisite is a knowledge of electromagnetism and of the associated mathematics of vector calculus. SI units are used throughout. There is still a tendency amongst some plasma physics researchers to· cling to C.g.S. units, but it is the author's view that universal adoption of SI units, which have been the internationally agreed standard since 1960, is to be encouraged. After a short introductory chapter, the basic properties of a plasma con cerning particle orbits, fluid theory, Coulomb collisions and waves are set out in Chapters 2-5, with illustrations drawn from problems in nuclear fusion research and space physics. The emphasis is on the essential physics involved and (he theoretical and mathematical approach has been kept as simple and intuitive as possible. An attempt has been made to draw attention to areas of current research and to present plasma physics as a developing subject with many areas ofuncertainty, and not as something to be set forth on 'tablets of stone'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photo acceleration has dominated the theoretical plasma physics area in recent years and has found application in all subjects where waves in continuous media are studied - plasma physics, astrophysics, and optics. This theory will provide a modern understanding of photon interaction with matter, helping to develop novel accelerators based on laser-plasma interactions, new radiation sources, and even new models for astrophysical objects. Written by a major player in the field, this book describes the general theory of photo acceleration, which allows fluid, kinetic, quantum, and classical electrodynamical approaches to be formulated. It includes examples from plasma physics, cosmology, fiber optics, mathematical physics, particle accelerator physics, and radiation physics.

Book excerpt: This graduate level textbook develops the theory of magnetically confined plasma, with the aim of bringing the reader to the level of current research in the field of thermonuclear fusion. It begins with the basic concepts of magnetic field description, plasma equilibria and stability, and goes on to derive the equations for guiding center particle motion in an equilibrium field. Topics include linear and nonlinear ideal and resistive modes and particle transport. It is of use to workers in the field of fusion both for its wide-ranging account of tokamak physics and as a kind of handbook or formulary. This edition has been extended in a number of ways. The material on mode-particle interactions has been reformulated and much new information added, including methodology for Monte Carlo implementation of mode destabilization. These results give explicit means of carrying out mode destabilization analysis, in particular for the dangerous fishbone mode. A new chapter on cyclotron motion in toroidal geometry has been added, with comparisons of the analysis of resonances using guiding center results. A new chapter on the use of lithium lined walls has been added, a promising means of lowering the complexity and cost of full scale fusion reactors. A section on nonlocal transport has been added, including an analysis of Levy flight simulations of ion transport in the reversed field pinch in Padova, RFX.

Book excerpt: Collective Modes in Inhomogeneous Plasmas: Kinetic and Advanced Fluid Theory presents the collective drift and MHD-type modes in inhomogeneous plasmas from the point of view of two-fluid and kinetic theory. Written by an internationally respected plasma transport theoretician, this introductory monograph emphasizes the description of the plasma rather than the geometry to present a more general approach to a large class of plasma problems. Starting with generalized fluid equations for low frequency phenomena, the author shows how drift waves and MHD-type modes can arise from the effects of inhomogeneities in the plasma. The kinetic description is then presented to reveal a host of phenomena ranging from vortex modes and finite Larmor radius effects to trapped and fast particle instabilities, transport, diffusion, and other advanced fluid effects. Theoretical and computational plasma physicists modeling confined plasmas will find this illustrated book a very valuable addition to their collection.

Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the field of modern plasma physics theory. The topics have been carefully chosen by the authors after many years teaching a graduate course in this subject. The book contains a comprehensive description of three widely used models in plasma physics: one-particle, hydro-dynamic and kinetic. The original results concerning fluctuation theory, nonlinear wave interaction and plasma turbulence have been obtained within the framework of the kinetic approach. This volume will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers studying plasma physics as well as statistical physics and magnetohydrodynamics. It will also be of use to students and researchers in physical astronomy, particularly in other space plasma physics such as solar physics and stellar structure.
