Book Synopsis Geomagnetic Diagnosis of the Magnetosphere by : A. Nishida
Download or read book Geomagnetic Diagnosis of the Magnetosphere written by A. Nishida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geomagnetic field observed on the surface of the earth has been an important source of information on the dynamic behavior of the magnetosphere. Because the· magnetosphere and its environment are filled with plasma in which electric current can easily flow, dynamic processes that occur in the magnetosphere tend to produce perturba tions in the geomagnetic field. Geomagnetic data have therefore pro vided valuable means for sensing the processes taking place at remote locations, and such basic concepts as the magnetosphere, solar wind, and trapped radiation were derived in early, presatellite days from geomagnetic analyses. Because of this advantage, geomagnetic observations have been widely utilized for monitoring the overall condition of the magneto sphere. Although the advent of space vehides has made it possible to observe magnetospheric processes in situ, supplementary information on the overall magnetospheric condition is frequently found to be indispensable for interpreting these observations in the proper perspec tive. Hence for magnetospheric physicists involved in various branches of the field it has become a common practice to employ geomagnetic data as a basic diagnostic tool.

Book Synopsis Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations by : Anatoly Leonovich
Download or read book Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations written by Anatoly Leonovich and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking new theory of the magnetosphere The magnetosphere is the region around Earth in which our planet's magnetic field exerts its influence to trap charged particles. Waves in this magnetosphere, known as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations, are caused by interactions between these charged particles, Solar wind pulses, and the magnetic field. The predictable interval between these oscillations enables them to serve as tools for understanding the magnetospheric plasma which comprises the field. Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations offers a comprehensive overview of the theory underlying these waves and their periodicity. Emphasizing the spatial structure of the oscillations, it advances a theory of MHD oscillation that promises to have significant ramifications in astronomy and beyond. Magnetospheric MHD Oscillationsreaders will also find: Theorizing of direct relevance to current satellite missions, such as THEMIS and the Van Allen Probe In-depth discussion of topics including Alfven resonance, waveguides in plasma filaments, and many more Detailed appendices including key calculations and statistical parameters Magnetospheric MDH Oscillations is ideal for plasma physicists, theoretical physicists, applied mathematicians, and advanced graduate students in these and related subfields.

Book Synopsis Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling by : Y. Kamide
Download or read book Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling written by Y. Kamide and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades a succession of direct observations by satellites, and of extensive computer simulations, has led to the realization that the polar ionosphere plays a principal role in large-scale magnetospheric processes - a manifestation of the physics linkage involved in solar-terrestrial interactions. Spatial/temporal variations in high-latitude electromagnetic phenomena, such as dynamic aurorae, electric fields and currents, have proved to be extremely complex. Now the challenge is to comprehend the vast amount of complicated measurements made in this magnetosphere-ionosphere sysstem of the Earth. This book addresses the electrical coupling between the hot, but dilute, magnetospheric plasma and the cold, but dense, plasma in the ionosphere. In five major chapters, this book presents: - basic properties of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; - morphology of electric fields and currents at high latitudes; - global modeling of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; - modeling of ionospheric electrodynamics; - current issues, such as auroral particle acceleration, substorms, penetration of high-latitude fields into low latitudes.

Book Synopsis Space Weather Monitoring by Ground-Based Means by : Oleg Troshichev
Download or read book Space Weather Monitoring by Ground-Based Means written by Oleg Troshichev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that the method, based on the ground polar cap magnetic observations is a reliable diagnosis of the solar wind energy coming into the magnetosphere Method for the uninterruptive monitoring of the magnetosphere state (i.e. space weather). It shows that the solar wind energy pumping power, can be described by the PC growth rate, thus, the magnetospheric substorms features are predetermined by the PC dynamics. Furthermore, it goes on to show that the beginning and ending of magnetic storms is predictable. The magnetic storm start only if the solar energy input into the magnetosphere exceeds a certain level and stops when the energy input turns out to be below this level.
