Steep-walled canyons dissect the upland surface in the northeast part Of the quadrangle. These canyons and the canyon of the Stanislaus River in the extreme southeast corner Of the quadrangle are younger features that result from uplift of the Sierra Nevada and more rapid erosion during later Tertiary and, probably, Quaternary time.
