Book excerpt: "To discover astonishing rocks and landforms in the Beaver State, all that is required is a good map, a sense of adventure, and Oregon Rocks, a guide to 60 of the most compelling geologic sites in the state. The well-chosen destinations span the state's geologic history from the Triassic marble at Oregon Caves to the 240-year-old lava dome on Mt. Hood. With more active volcanoes than any other state in the Lower Forty-Eight, Oregon boasts towering behemoths, steaming fumaroles, and eroding cinder cones. Geologist Marli Miller will guide you through the ash and lava from recent eruptions to find evidence of older ones, including a supervolcano possibly produced by the Yellowstone hot spot before it tracked east, and lava that flowed all the way to the coast from eruptions near the Oregon-Idaho border. Although residents of eastern and western Oregon may not admit they have anything in common, the barnacled sea stacks near Cannon Beach and Tillamook are composed of the exact same rock as stacked lava flows on the Columbia Plateau. With beautiful photographs and informative figures and maps, this guidebook will unite Oregonians in their pursuit of outdoor exploration, be it rock hounding, peak bagging, beachcombing, or contemplating their place in the long history of the Earth"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Annual Report on the Geology of the Public Lands: Belonging to the Two States of Maine and Massachusetts In order to form a comprehensive idea of the Geological Structure of the Public Lands in Maine, it is necessary to consider some of the results to which we have arrived, in examining other portions of the State, so far as to determine the relative positions and ages of the various great rock formations, which present themselves to view, while we apply the general principles of geological science to their elucidation. In making our explorations of the State, we have endeavored to record with strict accuracy, every observation which we were able to make while on the spot where the phenomena presented themselves, and specimens of all the rocks have been collected by us, and were invariably labelled immediately after they were obtained, so that they are faithful indications of the true geology of the country. In addition to our more especial geological duties, we have endeavored to give a portion of our attention to the interesting topographical features of the State, and have measured the altitude of many remarkable eminences and table lands, so that we might be enabled to present sectional view of the relief of the country. At the same time, I have laid down with care, the various rock formations, which I have represented in colors upon the best maps of the State that could be procured. Download or read book Geology of the San Francisco Bay Region written by Doris Sloan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-06-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't really know the place where you live until you know the shapes and origins of the land around you. To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant
Download or read book The Rio Chama written by Paul W. Bauer and published by . This book was released on 2021-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the hundreds of Rio Chama rafting trips that we've logged during the last 30 years, none of us has ever had a bad trip. Such is the magic of the Rio Chama. No matter the weather, the water level, the season, the crowded Big Eddy boat ramp on a blistering Sunday afternoon, or even the coffee forgotten at home, the Rio Chama remains "The People's River." Its stunning beauty, plus its exceptional camping, user-friendly whitewater, and mostly predictable flows, combine to create one of the Southwest's premiere, multi-day, river running experiences. The spectacular, towering canyon walls of the Wild & Scenic section through the remote Chama River Canyon Wilderness is New Mexico's own "Grand Canyon." The geology of the Rio Chama is so exceptional that this river is ideally suited for a river guide with a geological theme. And so, following the release of the Rio Grande geologic river guide in 2011, we turned our (part-time) attention to the Rio Chama. Although most Rio Chama recreation is focused on the El Vado to Big Eddy stretch, thedecision was easily made to include the entire boatable section, from the highlands in Colorado to the confluence with the Rio Grande, as each section of the river displays its own visual spectacles and assortment of adventures. Plus, the geology is magnificent and diverse along the entire length of the river.
Book Synopsis Rough-Hewn Land by : Keith Heyer Meldahl
Download or read book Rough-Hewn Land written by Keith Heyer Meldahl and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rough-Hewn Land tells the geologic story of the American West--the story of its rocks, rivers, mountains, earthquakes, and mineral wealth, including gold. It tells it by taking you on a 1000-mile-long field trip across the rough side of the continent from the California coast to the Rocky Mountains. This book puts you on the outcrop, geologic hammer in hand, to explore the evidence for how the spectacular, rough-hewn lands of the West came to be. When North America broke free from Eurasia and Africa some 200 million years ago, it triggered a cascade of violent geologic events that shaped the West we see today. As the west-moving continent crunched across the seabed of the ancient Pacific, islands and assorted pieces of ocean floor collected against its prow to build California--and plant gold there too. Meanwhile, mountains squeezed upward from California to Colorado, and vast quantities of molten rock seeded the crust with precious metals while spewing volcanic fire across the land. Later, the land stretched like an accordion to form the washboard-like Basin and Range province and Great Basin within it, while California began to crackle along the San Andreas fault. Throughout the West today, a near-constant drumroll of earthquakes testifies to a world still reshaping itself in response to the ceaseless movements of the Earth's tectonic plates. Rough-Hewn Land weaves these stories into the human history of the West. As we follow the adventures of John C. Frémont, Mark Twain, the Donner party, and other historic characters, we see how geologic forces have shaped human experience, just as they direct the fate of the West today"--

Book Synopsis A Ritual Geology by : Robyn d'Avignon
Download or read book A Ritual Geology written by Robyn d'Avignon and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the ongoing corporate enclosure of West Africa’s goldfields, A Ritual Geology tells the untold history of one of the world’s oldest indigenous gold mining industries: Francophone West Africa’s orpaillage. Establishing African miners as producers of subterranean knowledge, Robyn d’Avignon uncovers a dynamic “ritual geology” of techniques and cosmological engagements with the earth developed by agrarian residents of gold-bearing rocks in savanna West Africa. Colonial and corporate exploration geology in the region was built upon the ritual knowledge, gold discoveries, and skilled labor of African miners even as states racialized African mining as archaic, criminal, and pagan. Spanning the medieval and imperial past to the postcolonial present, d’Avignon weaves together long-term ethnographic and oral historical work in southeastern Senegal with archival and archeological evidence from Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, and Mali. A Ritual Geology introduces transnational geological formations as a new regional framework for African studies, environmental history, and anthropology.
