Book Synopsis Regional Trends in the Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian-Hercynian-Mauritanide Orogen by : P.E. Schenk
Download or read book Regional Trends in the Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian-Hercynian-Mauritanide Orogen written by P.E. Schenk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical Appalachian, Caledonian, Hercynian, and Mauritanide orogens are now only segments of a once-continuous Paleozoic mountain belt which has been fragmented during Mesozoic-Cenozoic formation of the North Atlantic Ocean. These segments are major parts of the countries surrounding the North Atlantic - most of which are members of NATO. The aim of this NATO conference was to evaluate these fragments in terms of their pre-Mesozoic positions, and to attempt a synthesis of their geologic evolution on an international and orogen-wide scale. Geologists who have studied these scattered remnants have been separated by both geography and discipline. Orogen-wide syntheses have beeen attempted in the past by individuals who are specialists not only in discipline but also in geography; therefore, these attempts have not been satisfactory to everyone. This conference brought together the foremost specialists in different disciplines from each country. They attempted to teach other specialists, not only in their own fields, but in other disciplines, about regional variations and particular problems. The resulting international cross-fertilization, both within and between speciaLties, enriched individual workers and helped to provide a multi-disciplinary overview of the orogen.

Book Synopsis Slate as Dimension Stone by : Jörn Wichert
Download or read book Slate as Dimension Stone written by Jörn Wichert and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review devoted exclusively to slate as dimension stone. Beginning with a description of the slate as dimension stone, the book describes the origin of slate and related geological phenomena. It thoroughly explains key data acquisition methods and techniques, which are accompanied by extensive data. In turn, slate standards are introduced and compared with regard to their importance for product quality. The book covers in detail the specific petrographical, fabric, strength, physical properties and weathering behaviour of slates. The chapter on mining and production provides an overview of the different forms of exploitation and related geotechnical aspects, together with production and workflow design, from the beginning to the final product. The second part comprises a thorough description of worldwide slate deposits and their geology, properties and appearance as well as a brief introduction of the history. Given its scope and accessible format, the book represents an essential guide for scientists, engineers, and professionals in geology, conservation science, architecture, and mining, as well as readers who are active in the slate industry.
