Book Synopsis Migration of the Acadian Orogen and Foreland Basin Across the Northern Appalachians of Maine and Adjacent Areas by : Dwight Culver Bradley
Download or read book Migration of the Acadian Orogen and Foreland Basin Across the Northern Appalachians of Maine and Adjacent Areas written by Dwight Culver Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timing of Acadian orogenesis in Maine is reassessed, on the basis of a new Silurian-Devonian time scale, new U/Pb and 40Ar/39Ar ages of Acadian plutons, new conodont and palynomorph ages of strata that constrain the age of deformation, and published information. This analysis shows that the Acadian deformation front migrated some 240 km (present distance) from southeast to northwest during a span of about 40 million years from Late Silurian to Middle Devonian time.

Book Synopsis The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen by : A. Krishna Sinha
Download or read book The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen written by A. Krishna Sinha and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal evolution of mountain belts is recorded inthe distribution, origin and ages of magnatism. In this volume, petrologic, isotopic and geochemical evidence is presented to highlight the contribution of igneous rocks to the evolution of the Appalachian Orogen in both Canada and the United States. These papers emphasize the use of modern geochemical and petrologic data to discriminate the sources yielding magmas, and thus the nature of the crust and mantle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 10th International Basement Tectonics Conference was conducted on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in Duluth, Minnesota, USA, from August I through August 11, 1992. A total of 78 individuals were in attendance, 47 of which represented the host country, with the remaining 31 traveling from 11 different foreign countries. The four days of presentations were divided into three technical sessions, namely "Shear Zones", "Basement Control On Younger Structures", and "Rifting Midcontinent Rift System". This tripartite conference theme was also employed in the field trip agenda with three excursions being offered, all ably organized by Field Trip Chairman John C. Green. The pre-conference trip set the stage through a two day review of the "Archean and Early Proterozoic Rocks of Northeastern Minnesota". Under beautiful summer skies, 16 sites were visited within the Vermilion district of Minnesota, considered to be the best example of an Archean greenstone belt in the United States. All registrants participated in the mid-conference trip conducted along the gabbroic and volcanic terrain of the "Midcontinent Rift, Northeastern Minnesota".

Book Synopsis Field Relations, Petrology, and Structure of Neoproterozoic Rocks in the Caledonian Highlands, Southern New Brunswick by : S. M. Barr
Download or read book Field Relations, Petrology, and Structure of Neoproterozoic Rocks in the Caledonian Highlands, Southern New Brunswick written by S. M. Barr and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caledonian highlands of southern New Brunswick are underlain mainly by volcanic, sedimentary, and plutonic rocks of Neoproterozoic age. This report presents results of field mapping, combined with petrologic and geochronological studies, of those Neoproterozoic rocks. It begins with a review of the regional geologic setting, then describes the lithological units. Field and stratigraphic relations among the volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the study area, as well as the distribution, field relations, petrochemistry, and age of the plutonic units, are interpreted. This is followed by interpretation of the tectonic setting and geological history of the area based on rock characteristics and a brief assessment of the area's mineral potential. Appendices include petrographic descriptions and results of geochemical analyses.

Book Synopsis Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland by : Geological Survey of Canada
Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Geological Survey of Canada and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Appalachian region of North America is a Paleozoic geological mountain belt or orogen occupying a position peripheral to the continent's stable interior craton. The Appalachian miogeocline and its extensions such as those found in Greenland form an open-ended continental margin. This volume details the geology of the Appalachian and related Greenland Caledonian Orogens, with a focus on the Canadian Appalachian Orogen. It describes the rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region under four broad temporal divisions: Lower Paleozoic and older, Middle Paleozoic, Upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. Separate sections cover the geophysical characteristics of the Orogen, plutonic rocks, metallogeny, paleontological contributions to Paleozoic paleogeographic and tectonic reconstructions, and East Greenland Caledonides. The volume is also intended as a report of progress in Appalachian geological research.
