Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This can be best described as a comprehensive volume, as there is no one-volume of work done on the geology of the entire Carpathian region. It is aimed to pave the way for global geologists to examine this tectonically complex and key area and to build up a clear picture about its origin, evolution and structure. It provides factual geological material for plate tectonicians to work on and to derive basic information from. Since it is intended to be comprehensive, it will also be a useful source material for professional geologists and specialists in the earth sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the fossil record of the Carpathian Basin. Fossils of the Carpathian Region describes and illustrates the region’s fossils, recounts their history, and tells the stories of key people involved in paleontological research in the area. In addition to covering all the important fossils of this region, special attention is given to rare finds and complete skeletons. The region’s fossils range from tiny foraminifera to the Transylvanian dinosaurs and mammals of the Carpathian Basin. The book also gives nonspecialists the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of paleontology. Sidebars present brief biographies of important figures and explain how to collect, prepare, and interpret fossils. “An excellently written scientific book. . . . The good illustrations are an incentive to start reading and dive into the wide area covered by two experts in their respective fields. . . . A rich source of otherwise not published background knowledge on the paleontology and geology of the region.” —Christian A. Meyer, Natural History Museum, Basel “Fossils of the Carpathian Region . . . is beautifully produced with high-quality color illustrations throughout and an exhaustive bibliography and index. . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice “This book fills a gap in the geological texts on the Carpathians, especially in Hungary, and offers a valuable wealth of geological-paleontological and scientific-historical information from the Ordovician to the Pleistocene. This extensive and relatively inexpensive work is an unrivaled recommendation for amateurs and amateur geologists / paleontologists.” —Zentralblatt für Geologie und Paläontologie [translated from German]

This study was jointly published in 1988 by the AAPG and the Hungarian Geological Society, and includes analysis of the tectonics, sedimentation history, biostratigraphy and correlation, and all aspects of basin development. Reflection seismic studies show the structure of the basin and basement beneath. Also featured are papers about heat flow, basin structures, regional perspective, regional volcanism, organic maturation, and petroleum source, maturation, and migration."--Container.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Carpathians, Patrice M. Dabrowski narrates how three highland ranges of the mountain system found in present-day Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine were discovered for a broader regional public. This is a story of how the Tatras, Eastern Carpathians, and Bieszczady Mountains went from being terra incognita to becoming the popular tourist destinations they are today. It is a story of the encounter of Polish and Ukrainian lowlanders with the wild, sublime highlands and with the indigenous highlanders—Górale, Hutsuls, Boikos, and Lemkos—and how these peoples were incorporated into a national narrative as the territories were transformed into a native/national landscape. The set of microhistories in this book occur from about 1860 to 1980, a time in which nations and states concerned themselves with the "frontier at the edge." Discoverers not only became enthralled with what were perceived as their own highlands but also availed themselves of the mountains as places to work out answers to the burning questions of the day. Each discovery led to a surge in mountain tourism and interest in the mountains and their indigenous highlanders. Although these mountains, essentially a continuation of the Alps, are Central and Eastern Europe's most prominent physical feature, politically they are peripheral. The Carpathians is the first book to deal with the northern slopes in such a way, showing how these discoveries had a direct impact on the various nation-building, state-building, and modernization projects. Dabrowski's history incorporates a unique blend of environmental history, borderlands studies, and the history of tourism and leisure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional Geology and Tectonics: Volume 2: Phanerozoic Rift Systems and Sedimentary Basins, Second Edition, is the second volume in a three-volume series covering Phanerozoic regional geology and tectonics. Experience in analyzing and assessing rifts - locations where the Earth’s outer shell and crust have been stretched over time by seismic activity - is critical for exploration geologists in identifying Earth’s most lucrative hydrocarbon locations in which extraction is both efficient and safe. Vast compilations of related industry data present regional seismic lines and cross sections, and summaries of analogue and theoretical models are provided as an essential backdrop to the structure and stratigraphy of various geological settings. The new edition of Regional Geology and Tectonics: Volume 2: Phanerozoic Rift Systems and Sedimentary Basins features updated summaries of analogue and theoretical models. New to this edition are chapters on deepwater foldbelts and lithospheric extension as well as new case studies on volcanic and passive margin basins. Provides a practical reference for petroleum geologists that discusses the importance of rift systems and the structural evolution of the Earth Includes analyses of active rifts in East Africa, China, Siberia, the Gulf of Suez, and the Russian Arctic that provide immediately implementable petroleum exploration applications in regions heavily targeted by oil & gas companies Presents overviews of sequence stratigraphy in rifts and structural controls on clastic and carbonate sedimentation that are critical to the exact mapping of the most lucrative hydrocarbon locations by exploration geologists

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to survey structure and development of the Precambrian basement in the Central and West European Variscan Belt, and in the Carpathian and Balkan mountains. Stratigraphy, lithology, tectonics, petrology, volcanism, metamorphism, plutonism, metallogeny, geochemistry, geochronology, and paleontology are combined to create a comprehensive and complex picture of the Precambrian basement in these younger fold belts. Stresses the stratigraphic viewpoint for research into Precambrian complexes, even when it is difficult to recognize in the Precambrian polystructural and polymetamorphic basement. Aeons and eras are correlated using the standard global geochronologic scale and lithostratigraphic units have been used for further subdivision.
