Book Synopsis Legal Aspects of Geology by : Ronald W. Tank
Download or read book Legal Aspects of Geology written by Ronald W. Tank and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise is an outgrowth of a series of seminars and tutorials on selected legal aspects of geology that were offered to several generations of undergraduate students at Lawrence University. The offerings were in response to a keen interest in how the law and legal institutions relate to the professional geologist. Much of the student interest was undoubtedly sparked by the legal controversies as sociated with the "environmental movement" that became so active during the 1970s and continues today to look to the law for the resolution of conflicting goals. Other students were interested in the role allocated to law by society in general, or were simply curious about law as a profession. Existing published material did not meet my needs, and I had to rely on "handouts" summarizing legal principles, reported appellate cases, and guest lectures from the county bar association. The more formally prepared course materials were edited by practicing attorneys and scholars in academia who encouraged me to seek a publisher who might make the materials available to a broader audience-an audience that might include not only students of the law but also the professional geologist, geological engineers, planners, policy makers, and attorneys, whether in industry, government, education, or private practice, who want to know more about the relationship between law and geology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining, Mineral and Geological Law The aim and scope of this book and the importance of a knowledge of mining law to the mining engineer and mine owner in the United States are explained in the introductory chapter, but a few words may be added here concerning existing books that might be used for such purposes. The excellent works of Lindley and Snyder, each in two large volumes, on account of their elaborateness and style of treatment, are not well adapted for the use of others than practicing lawyers, although indispensable to them. The small manuals of mining law and forms are usually too brief to give any adequate space for such statement and explanation of the principles of our complicated system of mining law as will enable it to be understood in any appreciable degree by those for whom they are intended. Moreover, owing to the extensive changes in and additions to the State statutes by the various legislatures in 1907, and the revision of the very important Land Office Rules and Regulations made in the same year, they are no longer safe guides in these respects. Consequently it would seem that a book containing in one volume a brief history of the development and a condensed but systematic exposition of the principles and rules of law that govern mining rights in the United States, together with a compilation of the National and State statutes and the Land Office Rules and Regulations relating thereto, revised to date, ought to be useful to the mining profession, and that the present is a particularly opportune time for its appearance. In the complex and intricate questions that have arisen out of the application of the extralateral provision of the law, a bare statement of the rule, worked out by the courts to govern rights in the various situations that arise in mining operations, would be inadequate to give a comprehension of the law. Download or read book A Guide to Forensic Geology written by L.J. Donnelly and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic geology is the application of geology to aid the investigation of crime. A Guide to Forensic Geology was written by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), Initiative on Forensic Geology (IFG), which was established to promote and develop forensic geology around the world. This book presents the first practical guide for forensic geologists in search and geological trace evidence analysis. Guidance is provided on using geological methods during search operations. This developed following international case work experiences and research over the last 25 years for homicide graves, burials associated with serious and organised crime and counter terrorism. With expertise gained in over 300 serious crime investigations, the guidance also considers geological trace evidence, including the examination of crime scenes, geological evidence recovery and analysis from exhibits and the reporting of results. The book also considers the judicial system, reporting and requirements for presenting evidence in court. Included are emerging applications of geology to police and law enforcement: illegal and illicit mining, conflict minerals, substitution, adulteration, fraud and fakery.
