Book excerpt: The Samuels Lake intrusion is an elliptical body about 600 by 300 metres located about halfway between Atikokan and Rainy Lake in north-west Ontario. The intrusion is similar to an array of mafic-ultramafic intrusions east of Atikokan called the Quetico Intrusions, and contains platinum group element (PGE) mineralization associated with the occurrence of sulphides, especially chalcopyrite. This report describes the lithology of the four distinct igneous phases of the intrusion, its structure, and its sulphide & PGE mineralization. Similarities with & differences between the Quetico Intrusions are noted.

Book excerpt: Insight into the Archean thermal & tectonic regime may be offered by studying the late Archean Quetico alkaline province, a suite of carbonate-bearing magmatic complexes associated with a recently discovered carbonatite body in north-west Ontario. This paper attempts to give a broad overview of the character of several such bodies examined in the Quetico alkaline province in summer 1999. It first describes the general geology of the study area and the chemical compositions of the intrusions studied. It then describes the field characteristics of the North Elbow Lake, Whalen lake, Harnett Lake, and Beaverhouse Lake intrusions. Origin of the intrusions is also discussed.

Book excerpt: A well-exposed section about 250 metres wide below the high water line of the Jennings River, Teslin Lake map area in northern British Columbia shows part of the Teslin Fault and provides an opportunity to constrain the fault's kinematic history by direct ground observations. This report describes preliminary structural observations of this section of the Teslin Fault, including the rock types involved, mylonitic & ultramylonitic structures, and deformation. Indications of two main episodes of shearing are discussed.

Book excerpt: The use of static global positioning system (GPS) equipment for accurate horizontal & vertical positioning in field geology operations at high latitudes is made difficult by the need to set up & operate a GPS reference station and limitations on the distance between the reference station & field GPS due to errors introduced by the ionosphere. Dual-frequency GPS receivers have the potential to eliminate these problems since they can eliminate ionospheric errors and thereby increase baseline lengths, thus potentially permitting the use of existing GPS reference stations. This paper describes the use of a dual-frequency receiver for establishing benchmarks along the Yukon River as a field trial of this technology. Field methods and post-processing of the data using GPS data from permanent receiving stations are described, and baseline results are presented. The derived benchmarks will be applied to a survey of fill thickness below the Yukon River.

Book excerpt: Describes uranium-lead dating of zircon and titanite from two representative samples of two plutons (diorite and quartz monzonite) in the Tetachuck Lake map area of central interior British Columbia. Includes information on the geological nature & setting of the sampled plutons, analytical procedures, and geochronology. The correlation of the two plutons with the metallogenically important group of Late Cretaceous Bulkley plutonic suite is discussed.

Book excerpt: Describes studies conducted as part of a program to provide baseline data of surficial materials, ice-flow history, and soil geochemistry in the Yellowknife area, aimed at augmenting the geoscience database to support mineral exploration & development. After description of the regional setting & bedrock geology of the area, information is presented on surficial sediments (till, glaciofluvial & glaciolacustrine sediments, peat), ice flow patterns, glacial history, and pebble lithology provenance.

Book excerpt: This study presents theoretical aspects and results of analyzes of the adsorbed water thicknesses and number of water molecular layers on pore surfaces for 11 sedimentary rock samples obtained from 850-950 metres depth in a Northwest Territories well. An additional purpose of the study was to determine if the adsorbed water content shows an increase with decreased temperature below 25 degrees C. Information is included on the analytical methodology. The results provide information that can be used to model the effect of temperature on the permeability history of compacting shale & mudstone under low temperature environments.

Book excerpt: The Nicola Horst in the southern intermontane belt, British Columbia, is a Tertiary fault-bounded structure that exposes relatively deep-seated metamorphic equivalents of Late Triassic Nicola Group volcanic & sedimentary rocks, intruded by plutons. Associated with the Nicola facies are undated conglomerate & schist units which are unlike any known facies of the Nicola Group but which resemble units of the pre-Nicola, pericratonic succession to the east. This paper presents preliminary results of field work conducted to better understand the evolution & contact relationships of the Nicola Horst and to examine whether the Horst provides evidence regarding the contact between the Nicola Group and the ancient North American cratonic rocks.

Book excerpt: A distinctive group of giant quartz veins characterizes the Great Bear magmatic zone east of Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories. They are topographically conspicuous, have attracted attention from mineral prospectors, and contain occurrences of uranium, copper sulphides, and other minerals. This paper presents results of the first study of fluid inclusions from giant quartz veins in this zone. Samples were studied from the Crowfoot and Ted uranium occurrences. It begins with descriptions of the regional geological setting, the quartz veins and associated stockworks, and the two occurrences studied. It then describes the fluid inclusion study methodology, petrographic observations, and temperature & salinity determinations of the fluid inclusion samples. The results are discussed with respect to the multi-stage developmental history of the quartz veins.
